Sir Joseph Larmor
Born: 11 July 1857 in Magheragall, County Antrim, Ireland
Died: 19 May 1942 in Holywood, County Down, Ireland
Joseph Larmor was educated at Belfast and Cambridge and taught at Galway, Ireland from 1880 to 1885. He then went to Cambridge becoming Lucasian Professor there in 1903. He worked on electricity, dynamics and thermodynamics. Larmor wrote Aether and Matter in 1900 (renamed by Lamb Aether and no matter ). He gave an explanation of the FitzGerald contraction independently of Lorentz. He was the first to calculate the rate of energy radiation from an accelerating electron and the first to explain the splitting of the spectral lines in a magnetic field. Knighted in 1909, Larmor served as MP for the University of Cambridge from 1911 to 1922. The Royal Society awarded him its Royal Medal in 1915 and its Copley Medal in 1921. He was also awarded the De Morgan Medal of the London Mathematical Society in 1914. Cross-references to History Topics Special relativity

Sir Joseph Larmor "[C]ontinued scientific progress is possible only if one appreciates the `difficulties that had to be circumvented in order to reach' the modern theories" Barbara Doran Joseph Larmor (1857-1942) was a theoretical physicist and mathematician who began the twentieth century as the fourteenth holder of the Lucasian Chair. He attended Queens' College in Belfast where he obtained a B.A and an M.A. From there he moved to St. John's College, Cambridge, where he was senior wrangler and won the Smith's Prize. He was elected a fellow in 1880 and was appointed university lecturer in 1885. The years between were spent at Queens' College, Galway, as a professor of natural philosophy. Larmor was to be the last of a breed of nineteenth century physicists whose work foreshadowed experiments and discoveries to come. His main contributions were presented in his book Aether and Matter , and in his major three part paper A Dynamical Theory of the Electric and Luminiferous Medium. He won the Adams Prize for an essay titled On the Theory of the Aberration of Light , which later became the book Aether and Matter The contemporaries of Larmor were such men as J.J. Thomson, William Thomson (Lord Kelvin), James Clerk Maxwell, Sir George Stokes and Hendrick Lorentz. All contributed great ideas toward the development of our understanding of the physical world. But it was Larmor's young followers who began the revolution in physics that marked the twentieth century.

Joseph Larmor 's father was Hugh Larmor and his mother was Anna Wright. Anna Wright was the daughter of Joseph Wright, and Joseph Larmor was named after his maternal grandfather. Hugh Larmor was a farmer at the time Joseph was born but he gave up farming when Joseph was around six or seven years old to become a trader with a grocer's shop in Belfast. Joseph was the eldest of a large family. By the time Joseph was of an age to attend school, his parents had moved to Belfast so it was in that city that he attended the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. At this time he was [1]:- A shy, delicate and precocious boy ... After leaving school, Larmor continued his education in Belfast, studying for his B.A. and M.A. at Queen's University, Belfast. In 1877, having graduated from the Queen's University, he went to St John's College, Cambridge, where he studied the Mathematical Tripos. In 1880 he graduated as Senior Wrangler (the top First Class student) and he was first Smith's prizeman. It is interesting to note that J J Thomson, who like Larmor would make an important contribution to the understanding of the electron, was Second Wrangler (taking second place in the Mathematical Tripos examinations to Larmor).

    Biography
Larmor explained the Fitzgerald contraction independently of Hendrik Lorentz (as he developed the Lorentz transformations in ). Larmor had described the phenomenon of time dilation in " Aether and Matter " (treating this as a dynamic rather than kinematic effect). Larmor was in opposition to Albert Einstein 's theory of relativity (though he supported it for a short time). Larmor rejected both the curvature of space and the special theory of relativity. Larmor proposed that the aether could be represented as a homogeneous fluid medium which was perfectly in compressible and elastic . Larmor believed the aether was separate from matter. Larmor united Lord Kelvin 's model of spinning gyrostats (e.g.

    Adams Prize
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Adams prize See also the Herbert Baxter Adams Prize of the American Historical Society The Adams Prize is awarded each year by the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and St John's College to a young, UK based mathematician for first class international research in the Mathematical Sciences. The Prize is named after the mathematician John Couch Adams and was endowed by members of St John's College. It was approved by the senate of the university in , to commemorate Adam's discovery of the planet Neptune . Originally open only to Cambridge graduates the current stipulation is that the mathematician must be resident in the UK, and under 40 years of age. Each year applications are invited from mathematicians who have worked in a specific area of mathematics. As of 2004 it is worth £15,000, and the prize is awarded in three parts. The first third is paid directly to the candidate, another third to the candidate's institution to fund research expenses, and the final third is paid on publication of a survey paper in the winners field in a major mathematics journal.
