The work of Robert Langlands
Robert P. Langlands was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, in 1936. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with an undergraduate degree in 1957 and an M.Sc. in 1958, and from Yale University with a Ph.D. in 1960. He has held faculty positions at Princeton University and Yale University, and is currently a Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He has won several awards recognizing his outstanding contributions to the theory of automorphic forms, among them an honorary degree from the University of British Columbia in 1985. Looking forward to eventual publication of his collected works, Professor Langlands is cooperating with us in providing on our site a large selection from his professional correspondence and previously unpublished work, as well as an almost complete collection of all of his published work. This material is being put into TeX at the Institute in Princeton and will appear here as it becomes ready. We would like to thank Dorothea Phares, Marietta Chiorello, Elly Gustafsson, Michelle Huguenin, and Carol Warfield of the staff at the Institute, as well as Mark Goresky, for helping with this project.

Functoriality
In January of 1967, while he was at Princeton University, Langlands wrote a letter of 17 hand-written pages to Andre Weil outlining what quickly became known as `the Langlands conjectures'. This letter even today is worth reading carefully, although its notation is by present standards somewhat clumsy. It was in this letter that what later became known as the ` L -group' first made its appearance, like Gargantua, surprisingly mature. Because of its historic importance, we give here two versions of this letter, as well as a pair of supplementary notes accompanying it. A typed copy of this letter, made at Weil's request for easier reading, circulated widely among specialists in the late 'sixties and 'seventies. The covering note from Harish-Chandra has been helpful in establishing a date for the letter, which is itself undated.

Smith Technology Development Division Argonne National Laboratory Abstract: Analysis of neutron activation cross sections from 16-20 MeV that were measured in 1996 at the IRMM Van de Graaff facility in Geel, Belgium, has been completed and a paper has been submitted for publication. A new set of measurements was performed at the IRMM facility during May-June 1998 as part of an on-going collaboration between Argonne, IRMM, and JAERI. Experimental and evaluated data for neutron-induced hydrogen production reactions on vanadium have been compiled and critically examined. This investigation led to a recommendation that ENDF/B-VI evaluations for the (n,np+pn) and (n,t) processes be revised. These revisions lead to a reduction by a factor of about 3 in hydrogen production from vanadium at 14 MeV neutron energy. The compilation of (p

Robert P Langlands ' father was Robert Langlands while his mother was Kathleen Phelan. He married Charlotte Lorraine Cheverie on 13 August 1956 while he was a nineteen year old undergraduate at the University of British Columbia. He was awarded his B.A. in the following year and continued to study at the University of British Columbia for his master's degree which was awarded in 1958. Langlands then studied at Yale University for his doctorate. He submitted his thesis Semi-groups and representations of Lie groups to Yale in 1960 and received the degree of Ph.D. Langlands wrote:- There are two, related parts to this thesis: one on representations of Lie semi-groups and one on operators associated to representations of Lie groups. The first part was published in the Canadian Journal of Mathematics, but the second was published only as an announcement in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA. It nevertheless had the good fortune to be taken seriously by Derek Robinson, who incorporated some of the results into his book on Elliptic Operators and Lie Groups.

    The Practice of Mathematics
Ars longa, vita brevis New Lectures online at Duke University
There are several central mathematical problems, or complexes of problems, that every mathematician who is eager to acquire some broad competence in the subject would like to understand, even if he has no ambition to attack them all. That would be out of the question! Those with the most intellectual and aesthetic appeal to me are in number theory, classical applied mathematics and mathematical physics. In spite of forty years as a mathematician, I have difficulty describing these problems, even to myself, in a simple, cogent and concise manner that makes it clear what is wanted and why. As a possible, but only partial, remedy I thought I might undertake to explain them to a lay audience. I shall try for a light touch including, in particular, some historical background. Nevertheless the lectures are to be about mathematics. In the first set, there will be geometrical constructions, simple algebraic equations, prime numbers, and perhaps an occasional integral. Every attempt will be made to explain the necessary notions clearly and simply, taking very little for granted except the good will of the audience.

    Connection with number theory
The starting point of the program may be seen as the Artin reciprocity law which generalizes quadratic reciprocity . The Artin reciprocity law applies to an algebraic number field whose Galois group over Q is abelian , assigns L-functions to the one-dimensional representations of this Galois group; and states that these L-functions are identical to certain Dirichlet L-series (that is, the analogues of the Riemann zeta function constructed from Dirichlet characters ). The precise correspondence between these different kinds of L-functions constitutes Artin's reciprocity law.
