John Landen 's mother was Elizabeth Cole and his father was Matthew Landen. John trained to become a surveyor and practised that occupation in Peterborough from 1740 to 1762. After 22 years as a surveyor he took up a position as land agent to Earl Fitzwilliam on his estate at Milton, near Peterborough. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society on 16 January 1766. He continued to work for William Fitzwilliam until 1788 when he had to give up since by this time he was suffering the effects of a painful illness. He had married Elizabeth and they had two daughters. His wife's death occurred shortly after he gave up his position as land agent and only a short time before his own death. Landen was never a professional mathematician and his interest in mathematics was for him a leisure activity. He began contributing to the mathematical problem section of the Ladies diary from 1744 soon after he began working as a surveyor. In 1754 he published the first of his eight articles in the

    Excited about teaching and learning
New teachers join the ranks of Steamboat Springs School District educators By Susan Cunningham Sunday, September 4, 2005 Editor's note: Following are short Steamboat Springs Middle School Amanda Anzalone, seventh-grade resource teacher; junior varsity volleyball coach Anzalone previously has worked in Steamboat schools as a resource severe-needs aide, and she decided to become a teacher because she enjoys spending time with children and learning from them. Her teaching style involves being open-minded and flexible. She thinks teaching should be something in which both teachers and students are active in the teaching and learning processes. When not teaching, she likes spending time with her husband and their two dogs as well as gardening, photography, reading and horseback riding. Kathleen Huron, 32, sixth-grade resource teacher

"Let everyone know this is where I'm at, I'm fishing and I'm free.''
Proving John Byrd's innocence remains family's goal
    February 19, 2004 Cliff Arnebeck
COLUMBUS - On the second anniversary of the execution of John Byrd by the State of Ohio, the Byrd family's civil attorney advised the Ohio attorney general's office that a previously threatened wrongful death suit would not be filed against the state. "The family's interest is in getting the truth out, not in getting monetary compensation for their loss. Investigative journalism and media coverage are better ways for getting at the truth than more litigation would be," said Columbus attorney Cliff Arnebeck. "Exclusively focusing on getting to the truth will best serve the purposes of both proving John's innocence and correcting flaws in the criminal justice system. This is far more important to the family and to our society than faultfinding for the purpose of obtaining monetary compensation."

    Leonhard Euler (1707 - 1783)
From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. Leonhard Euler I think we may sum up Euler's work by saying that he created a good deal of analysis, and revised almost all the branches of pure mathematics which were then known, filling up the details, adding proofs, and arranging the whole in a consistent form. Such work is very important, and it is fortunate for science when it fall into hands as competent as those of Euler. Euler wrote an immense number of memoirs on all kinds of mathematical subjects. His chief works, in which many of the results of earlier memoirs are embodied, are as follows. In the first place, he wrote in 1748 his Introductio in Analysin Infinitorum , which was intended to serve as an introduction to pure analytical mathematics. This is divided into two parts. The first part of the Analysis Infinitorum contains the bulk of the matter which is to be found in modern text-books on algebra, theory of equations, and trigonometry. In the algebra he paid particular attention to the expansion of various functions in series, and to the summation of given series; and pointed out explicitly that an infinite series cannot be safely employed unless it is convergent. In the trigonometry, much of which is founded on F. C. Mayer's Arithmetic of Sines , which had been published in 1727, Euler developed the idea of John Bernoulli, that the subject was a branch of analysis and not a mere appendage of astronomy or geometry. he also introduced the trigonometrical functions, and shewed that the trigonometrical and exponential functions were connected by the relation
