CLASSICAL ROOTS AND EARLY ISLAMIC PERIOD The real details of the astrolabe’s invention in ancient Greece have largely been lost. The third century BC mathematician Apollonius, of what is now Turkey, may have invented its stereographic projection of the celestial sphere. And the astronomer Hipparchus may have been familiar with that projection during the next century, or may have even invented the astrolabe then. A useful but inaccurate Islamic myth is that Ptolemy discovered the astrolabe when his celestial globe dropped under the hooves of his donkey. The astrolabe does resemble a celestial globe or armillary sphere that has been “flattened” into two dimensions. And its basic design has not changed over the millennia but only been enhanced by many different features.

Let's have a few rounds of 'name that quote.' I'll put a quote up - you tell me who said and you win!Your prize if you win? The satisfaction of being a very aware person... (yeah, I know - pretty lame..). First quote might be easy - it has been featured here before - But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country. The next quote is a great one. It clearly delineates the importance of resisting the government and being good citizens.. Patriotism means to stand by the country. I've just finished packaging swftools, old RFP which was given up because of DFSG pb ( http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=187275
The upstream source has now a disable-lame option I used to build this package.

Treatise on Architecture Life Of Brunelleschi (c.1482-1489), implied that perspective arose from architectural interests but did not elaborate. Luca Pacioli, in his Summa (1494), mentioned the use of perspective in contemporary painting but was silent about the question of origins. The first half of the sixteenth century brought no serious change. Pélerin (1505), Pacioli (1509), Ringelbergius (1535) in their treatises on perspective referred mainly to an artistic context but made no mention of Brunelleschi, Alberti or Filarete. Lives of the Artists (1550) marked a significant change. He looked for the origins of perspective in painting practice of the thirteenth century. In his view, perspective arose as part of a general quest for naturalistic representation in art: "They sought to reproduce what they saw in Nature and no more, and thus they came to consider more closely and understand more fully. This encouraged them to make rules for perspective and get their foreshortening in the exact form of natural relief." Vasari noted the contributions of Giotto (1266-1377) with respect to foreshortening, while Giotto’s pupil, Stefano (1301-1350), "drew an edifice in perspective perfectly, in a style then little known, displaying improved form and more science."     Introduction
    With all the hulabaloo going around about calendars and their reform, I thought I would present one of the oldest and probably the least known calendar in history. Calendar A had its origins in ancient Alpo Balognia (pronounced alpo-baloney-ah for you non-scholarly types), and is presented here for the first time in full reconstruction.
    History
    The empire of Alpobalognia was all but forgotten by the time the Peloponnesian poet Hesiod wrote his now famous ' Works and Days '. He makes no direct reference to the Alpobalognian calendar, but the description of 2 of his days are remarkably similar to what we now believe to be the Feasts of Om and Og . Although Hesiod did not discuss the calendar directly, it is almost certain he was aware it. Some scholars have suggested that he was, for a time, in possesion of the only surviving volume. Regardless, the volume next surfaces again in ancient Greece. This time in the hands of the reknown historian Herodotus, who wrote ' The Histories '. Herodotus, does them a diservice by completely glossing over their accomplishments. He mentions their civilization only briefly in a slight reference to pre-Egyptian stone cutting
