Johann Heinrich Lambert (1728 - 1777)
From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. Johann Heinrich Lambert Lambert's most important works were one on optics, issued in 1759, which suggested to Arago the lines of investigation he subsequently pursued; a treatise on perspective, published in 1759 (to which in 1768 an appendix giving practical applications were added); and a treatise on comets, printed in 1761, containing the well-known expression for the area of a focal sector of a conic in terms of the chord and the bounding radii. Besides these he communicated numerous papers to the Berlin Academy. Of these the most important are his memoir in 1768 on transcendental magnitudes, in which he proved that is incommensurable (the proof is given in Legendre's , and is there extended to ): his paper on trigonometry, read in 1768, in which he developed Demoivre's theorems on the trigonometry of complex variables, and introduced the hyperbolic sine and cosine denoted by the symbols sinh x , cosh x : his essay entitled analytical observations, published in 1771, which is the earliest attempt to form functional equations by expressing the given properties in the language of the differential calculus, and then integrating his researches on non-Euclidean geometry: lastly, his paper on vis viva, published in 1783, in which for the first time he expressed Newton's second law of motion in the notation of the differential calculus.

Johann Heinrich Lambert 's family were originally from Lorraine which was a French territory up to the Thirty Years' War. Three Christian denominations, Roman Catholicism, Lutheranism, and Calvinism, each tried to impose themselves and various countries joined in the conflicts which raged across Europe for many years. In 1635 the Lambert family, who were Calvinists, fled from Lorraine as religious refugees and settled in Mulhouse. At that time Mulhouse was a free imperial city which had formed defensive alliances with the Swiss. Lambert's father, Lukas Lambert, was a tailor as his own father had been. Lukas married Elizabeth Schmerber in 1724 and Johann Heinrich Lambert was one of their five sons. It was a large family, with two girls in addition to the five boys, and Lukas Lambert did not have sufficient income to enable him to support and educate the family in comfort. Heinrich attended school in Mulhouse, receiving a reasonably good education up to the age of twelve, studying French and Latin in addition to elementary subjects. However, when he was twelve years old he had to leave school to help his father with tailoring. Most young boys would have ended their education at that point, but not young Heinrich who continued to study in his own spare time. Usually his day was fully occupied in helping his father but in the evenings he would study scientific subjects on his own.

Lambert, Johann Heinrich (1728-1777)
German philosopher, described by Immanuel Kant as "the greatest genius of Germany." Lambert also ranked among the leading astronomers, mathematicians, and physicists of his day. In his Cosmological Letters (1761) he arrived, independently, at much the same conclusion as Kant and Thomas Wright , concerning the disk-shaped form of the Milky Way and the existence of external systems of stars (galaxies) throughout space. Lambert's Letters Letters , "... is much too efficient not to imprint life, forces and activity on each speck of dust.... [I]f one is to form a correct notion of the world, one should set as a basis God's intention in its true extent to make the whole world inhabited ..." The principle of plenitude he adopts without restraint: "all possible varieties which are permitted by general laws ought to be realized ... " Yet Lambert is reasonable enough to acknowledge that he is being purely speculative: "And truly, have I not already rambled somewhat beyond the limits of what is credible? I drew conclusions. and surely enough without having in each case appropriate observational evidence on hand ..."
Like Wright and Kant, Lambert was driven to his extraterrestrial conclusions by the conviction that God, in his omnipotence, could not fail to populate every corner of the cosmos with all manner of beings. Indeed, these three pioneers of galactic and extragalactic astronomy seem to have been motivated as much by their desire to expand the number of planetary systems available for habitation as they were to populate the heavens with more stars.

Lambert, Johann (1728-1777)

German mathematician who proved pi ) to be an irrational number and introduced hyperbolic functions He devised techniques for measuring light intensity accurately. He also wrote influential books on geometry the theory of cartography and perspective in art. His book on geometry Die Theorie der Parallellinen (1786) foreshadowed the discovery of non-Euclidean geometry When asked by Frederick II in which science he was most proficient, Lambert modestly replied "All" (Boyer 1968, p. 504).
