Young-earth "proof" #11: Since the earth's magnetic field is decaying at an exponential rate, its strength would have been unrealistically high 25,000 years ago. Thus, Earth is less than 25,000 years old.
Dr. Hovind is almost certainly talking about Barnes's magnetic field argument (1973) or some echo of it. Henry Morris, himself, once praised it as one of the best arguments for a young earth. In 1971 Barnes took about 25 measurements of the earth's magnetic field strength (originally assembled by Keith McDonald and Robert Gunst (1967)) and fitted them to an exponential decay curve. He drew upon Sir Horace Lamb's 1883 paper as theoretical justification for this. Following the curve backwards in time, Barnes showed that 20,000 years ago the earth's magnetic field would have been impossibly high. Thus, he concluded that the earth is much younger than 20,000 years. There are several fatal errors in Thomas G. Barnes's work: 1. Barnes employs an obsolete model of the earth's interior. Today, no one doing serious work on the earth's magnetic field envisions its source as a free electrical current in a spherical conductor (the earth's core) undergoing simple decay. Elsasser's dynamo theory is the only theory today which has survived.

Research in Fluid Dynamics
Manchester has been a pioneer in the field of fluid dynamics for well over a hundred years since the arrival of Osborne Reynolds in 1868. By the time Reynolds published his landmark paper on fluid dynamics in 1895, Manchester had already been strengthened by the appointment of Sir Horace Lamb FRS to Applied Mathematics. The recognition of fluid dynamics as a cornerstone of classical science was continued further with the later appointments of Sydney Goldstein FRS and Sir James Lighthill FRS, each of which made contributions that define the subject as we see it today. Our current group is perhaps the largest research group within the school (indeed one of the biggest fluids groups within the UK and Europe) and spans many important sub-areas of fluid dynamics research. Our research problems are driven by group interests that span modern analytical methods, large-scale numerical computations and detailed quantitative experimental techniques. At the disposal of the group is a large journal library facility, up-to-date computational workstations, and a fully equipped and staffed fluid-dynamics laboratory through the interdisciplinary Manchester Centre for Nonlinear Dynamics . Research problems in this area may be contained within one of these theoretical/numerical/experimental categories, or cross one or more discipline boundaries.

Continuum Mechanics Reseach Group
Continuum mechanics, roughly speaking, is the study of the response of continuous media to applied forcing or loading. Practically every description of the physical world employs equations derived from a continuum approach, e.g. electromagnetism and fluid mechanics. The essential idea is that the material under investigation is composed of such small basic elements, or atoms, that they may 'integrated' to give continuously varying, and differentiable, field quantities. In the case of solid mechanics, the basic variables will be the stress, displacement and density defined at every point of the body. Using continuum modelling, Newton's second law and other physical conditions can be derived in pointwise form as differential equations. Then, powerful techniques, developed over many years, can be applied to yield great understanding and results of profound usefulness to society. For example, the lift on aeroplane wings could not be ascertained, and therefore we would not have air flight, if not for continuum mechanics! The same is true in almost every avenue of physics and engineering. Manchester has had a very long tradition in the subject, ever since Sir Horace Lamb FRS worked here at the end of the 19th Century, and the present group continues internationally leading research in the area. Current interests are outlined below, and all members of the group are keen to take on new students in the areas listed.

An introduction to Ivy Compton-Burnett's Manservant and Maidservant by Diane Johnson
The first thing that strikes the reader of is that they are written almost entirely in dialogue, with the merest stage directions to place people or indicate who is speaking. This was considered their innovation, the something "modern" about them when her first books were published in England in the 1920s, to growing acclaim . It also explains their difficulty. Their difficulty may in turn account for the fact that they were fashionable, and that they are not much read today, so that a new edition of Manservant and Maidservant may be for many readers an introduction to the works of this fascinating novelist.

Poetry and Politics in the Cockney School presents the second generation English Romantics as a 'single school' of writers and painters centred in the eighteen-teens on Leigh Hunt, Hampstead and London. Well-known associates of Hunt like Percy and Mary Shelley, Lord Byron, John Keats, Vincent Novello, Charles and Mary Lamb, Horace Smith, and Benjamin Haydon all sought deliberately at various times to relate themselves to 'group endeavours'. But Jeffrey Cox alerts us to the much wider gathering that shared Hunt as 'chief organiser', including Hunt's brothers John and Robert, Hunt's sister-in-law Elizabeth ('Bessy') Kent, John Hamilton Reynolds, Charles Brown, the Ollier brothers, Horace and James Smith, Charles and Mary (Novello) Cowden Clarke, Barry Cornwall, 'I.C.T.', Thomas Alsager, Thomas Barnes, Thomas Love Peacock, Acrasia Wragg, William Hazlitt, Edward Holmes, Cornelius Webb, William Godwin, Charles Dilke, Barron Field, Joseph Severn - and still more.
