plate wave, guided wave A type of ultrasonic wave propagation in which the wave is guided between two parallel surfaces of the test object. For an object sufficiently thin to allow penetration to the opposite surface, e.g. a plate having a thickness of the order of a wavelenght or so, Rayleigh waves degenerate to Lamb waves, which can be propagate in a number of modes, either symmetrical or antisymmetrical . The velocity is dependent on the product of frequency and material thickness. Lamb waves are named for Horace Lamb, in honor of his fundamental contributions to this subject. Investigation on Lamb and leaky Lamb waves have been carried out continuously since their discovery and researchers have done theoretical and experimental work for different purposes, ranging from seismology and the ship construction industry to acoustic microscopy, non-destructive testing and acoustic sensors. Synonymous terms are guided wave and plate wave

John Douglas Cockcroft was born at Todmorden, England, on May 27th, 1897. His family had for several generations been cotton manufacturers.
He was educated at Todmorden Secondary School and studied mathematics at Manchester University under Horace Lamb in 1914-1915. After serving in the First World War in the Royal Field Artillery he returned to Manchester to study electrical engineering at the College of Technology under Miles Walker. After two years apprenticeship with Metropolitan Vickers Electrical Company he went to St. John's College, Cambridge, and took the Mathematical Tripos in 1924. He then worked under Lord Rutherford in the Cavendish Laboratory.
He first collaborated with P. Kapitsa in the production of intense magnetic fields and low temperatures. In 1928 he turned to work on the acceleration of protons by high voltages and was soon joined in this work by E.T.S. Walton. In 1932 they succeeded in transmuting lithium and boron by high energy protons. In 1933 artificial radioactivity was produced by protons and a wide variety of transmutations produced by protons and deuterons was studied. In 1934 he took charge of the Royal Society Mond Laboratory in Cambridge.
In 1929 he was elected to a Fellowship in St. John's College and became successively University demonstrator, lecturer and in 1939 Jacksonian Professor of Natural Philosophy.

68. The Lamb Dipole
The lamb dipole is named after Sir horace lamb who in the second edition of his treatise Hydrodynamics (1895) considered this solution in a rather sketchy
http://www.fluid.tue.nl/users/jos/VDG/lamb-dip.html
The Lamb dipole
The Lamb dipole is a dipolar vortex structure with a continuous vorticity distribution within a circular region. This dipole moves along a staight line with a constant velocity and without change of form. It is a stationary solution of the two-dimensional vorticity equation (Navier-Stokes equation) when there are no viscous effects and the domain is infinite.
When viscous effects play a role, the vorticity is spread over a larger area and the dipole decreases in strength, so that the velocity also decreases in the course of time; the motion remains along a straight line though. In case the domain is finite, the velocity of the dipole is less than in an infinite domain.
A somewhat more precise description
The Lamb dipole has a continuous vorticity distribution within a circle of radius a . Inside this circle there is a linear relationship between the vorticity omega and the streamfunction psi , namely: omega=k psi , where k is a constant given by ak=3.83 . Outside this circle there is no vorticity: omega=0 . The flow outside the dipole is a potential flow: a two-dimensional flow around a circular cylinder placed in a flow field with a uniform velocity U , as sketched below.

Henry Lamb (1883-1960)
The son of the mathematician, Horace Lamb, he was born in Adelaide, South Australia, but the family moved to Manchester in 1885. After attending Manchester Grammar School he starting medical training at Owen's College (later to become Manchester University). In 1905 he left his medical studies and went to London where he entered the Chelsea School of Art. Over the next few years several of his paintings received good reviews, including Death of a Peasant and Fisherfolk. He also became close friends with Augustus John and Lytton Strachey. For a time, Lamb and John lived together with Dorelia McNeill at Alderney Manor near Poole. He was associated for a time with the Camden Town painters. In 1913 Lamb met Stanley Spencer and was immediately impressed by his visionary paintings. On the outbreak of the First World War, Lamb thought it was his patriotic duty to return to medicine. He and Spencer joined the Royal Army Medical Corps.. Lamb was sent to France where he worked at the Hospital du Casino. In November 1915 he returned to England where he finished off his medical studies in order to qualify for a commission. In September, 1916, Lamb was sent as a member of the Northumbrian Field Ambulance Unit to Salonika. In March 1917 Lamb was promoted to captain and transferred to the Fifth Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, with whom he saw action in the Near East. After the war he became noted as a portrait painter, as in his well-known pictures of Evelyn Waugh.and members of the Bloomsbury Group.

Krause, AWI Bremerhaven Long records of water level and currents in the Weddell Sea In 1988 two moorings, each with an Aanderra pressure recorder and 2 currentmeters, have been recovered from the shelves near Atka Bay and Cape Norvegia. They had been in operation for almost one year and provided excellent time series. Analyses focus on long-period tidal constituents, long-term changes of water level and variations of the coastal current. A new mooring has been redeveloped at Cape Norvegia, and it is intended to maintain moorings at this location for the whole of the WOCE period. National (FRG) Antarctic Research Report to SCAR No.13 - 1991 Past Activities (Oct. 1990 - March 1991) p43 Prof. G. Krause, AWI Bremerhaven Long-term measurement of water level and currents near Cape Norvegia A mooring with an Aanderra pressure recorder and two additional current meters has been maintained on the shelf near Cape Norvegia since 1988. The time series are expected to contribute to the studies of the dynamics of the Weddel Gyre and the coastal current at this most southern observation site within the network of tide gauges in the South Atlantic. So far, tidal constinuents have been analyzed from yearly records. The strongest non-tidal signals in water level result from meteorological forcing. Kang and S.N. Seo Ocean Environmental Engineering Lab., KORDI Tide and temperature data are essential to understand the Antarctic ocean environmental study. Under unfavorable conditions, such as those in Antarctica, it is not easy to obtain continuous data that are necessary to predict long-term variation of the environment. Therefore, in the present study we are focusing on the method of data collection. A tide-temperature gauge has been installed at a depth of 37.7 m near King Sejong Station (62deg13min S, 58deg47min W). This pressure-type tide gauge is connected by an underwater cable to a PC in the Station so that recent logged in the gauge can be retrieved at any time. The gauge is designed to measure sea level every 10 minutes and the logger can store up the data obtained for 277 days. Temperature data have been collected every 6 hours since January 24, 1991. Tide data, measured between January 24, 1991 and February 21, was compared to the tide table predicted by Uruguay base (62deg11min S, 58deg52min W). The data agrees well with the tide table. Tide harmonic constants and the datum line were calculated from the data. Head: Augustin Sanchez-Arcilla, Polytechnic University of Barcelona. A continuous recording of sea level upwelling (3072 readings) was also obtained every 3 hours, at the rate of one reading every 0.390625 s over a period of 20 minutes. The first reading was received on 9 December 1991 at 11:20 pm GMT. During the recording period of this first stage, dating from the setting up of the station (9/12/91 at 11:00 pm GMT) to the time the members departed from the Base (5/1/92), 99 % of the anticipated total volume of continuous recordings was obtained, a total of 98.55 % of these being correct. Reindeer Lake
Southend and Brochet
For the entire month of May, I did nothing but read up on all the files of the Saskatchewan district as far back as was necessary to get a grip on each subject. I took copious notes, from the names of the firms who handled our freight and when, through conditions of the buildings, data on staff, miscellaneous items which had to be checked at the posts regularly each year: from fire equipment, home furnishings and building painting programs, to the issue of winter trapping debts.
I went to Birt's Saddlery in Winnipeg and purchased a large leather, accordian-looking carrying bag with four partitions, and carefully packed the tools of my new trade. I carried it with me on every inspection trip. In time, it became known as 'Ross's Traveling District Office'. Although I was kidded unmercifully about it, the bag stood me in good stead over the years. Somewhere in that bag was the answer to every question or problem that arose at a post. It contained the Company's standing rules and regulations, post accounting manual, the latest annual and semi-annual rating reports on post managers and assistant staff, the latest monthly trading results for each post, each post's dwelling standard equipment list, inspection notebook, and various other odds and ends. One important item was a copy of the Company's fur trade code used for telegraphing any change of fur prices and for advising district office of monthly post results.
Another item included was Slater's codebook. Slater's was like a dictionarywords listed in alphabetic orderwith an assigned number for each. To send a message, you selected your word with its number, added a prearranged three-digit number and looked up the resulting figure. To decode, the process was reversed. There were two different key numbers; one for messages between district office and the posts and vice-versa; and the other for messages between district office and district managers. With this, I could send any confidential message to district office from any post without the post manager being able to decode it.

Gaia Hypothesis (n.) Gates, William L. American climatologist. A pioneer in climate modelling. Gauss, Karl Friedrich Disquisitiones Arithmeticae , was published in 1801. He invented mathematical statistics (i.e. Gaussian distribution and Gaussian error calculation) as well as making contributions to the science of geomagnetism and planetary motions. Much of his work remained unpublished during his lifetime and was later rediscovered in the later 19 th century. General circulation of the atmosphere (n.) The science of meteorology may well be said to have begun when George Hadley, in 1735, attempted to explain from physical principles why the trade winds exist. The trades are the easterly winds north and south of the equatorial doldrum belt. The trades got their name from English sailors, for their steadiness (as in "the wind blows trade," i.e. on track). Doldrums refers to the becalmed ships with flapping sails (as in the term "in the doldrums"). Hadley pointed out that equatorial solar heating would make tropical air lighter than air at high latitudes. Tropical air would thus rise, high latitude air would sink, winds at the surface would blow towards the equator, and winds aloft would blow towards the poles. Hadley realized that the rotation of the earth would cause the surface wind blowing toward the equator to veer towards the west, thus producing the system of trades familiar to the mariners of his day. This picture is quite realistic as concerns the trades and the doldrums. It had to be modified considerably, however, to account for the other global wind belts, notably the westerlies. The physicist Carl-Gustaf Rossby did this in the 1930's and 1940's, thus founding modern meteorology. Not one, but several circulation cells are involved, with air rising not only at the tropics, but also at the
