Lamb, Horace
English applied mathematician. His chief work is Treatise on the Motion of Fluids 1879, revised and updated as Hydrodynamics 1895-1932, but he also wrote on elasticity, sound, and mechanics.
Lamb was born in Stockport, Cheshire, and studied at Cambridge. He went to Australia 1875 to take up the chair of mathematics at the University of Adelaide. In 1885 he returned to Manchester as professor at Owens College.
Lamb was particularly adept at applying the solution of a problem in one field to problems in another. A paper of 1882, which analysed the modes of oscillation of an elastic sphere, achieved its true recognition in 1960, when free Earth oscillations during an earthquake behaved in the way he had described. A paper of 1904 gave an analytical account of propagation over the surface of an elastic solid of waves generated by given initial disturbances, and the analysis he provided is now regarded as one of the seminal contributions to theoretical seismology.

After attending Manchester Grammar School he starting medical training at Owen's College (later to become Manchester University ). In 1905 he left his medical studies and went to London where he entered the Chelsea School of Art . Over the next few years several of his paintings received good reviews, including Death of a Peasant and Fisherfolk
He also became close friends with Augustus John and Lytton Strachey . For a time, Lamb and John lived together with Dorelia McNeill at Alderney Manor near Poole. In 1913 Lamb met Stanley Spencer and was immediately impressed by his visionary paintings.

    Addison, Joseph
The eldest son of a cleric, Addison eventually found himself at Oxford (Queen's and Magdalen). He wrote favourable (whether commissioned, or not) articles concerning certain powerful people and their works; he was duly rewarded with a pension of £300 which allowed Addison to travel extensively throughout the continent for four years. With the victory at Blenheim , in 1704, Addison was commissioned to write The Campaign and this led to further political patronage; he was appointed as a Commissioner of Excise Taxes (the only significant taxes they had in those days). The job as a commissioner, presumably, took little of Addison's time and he was left to pursue his writing. While he had contributed to the Tatler (started by Steele in 1709), Addison started his own paper in 1711, the Spectator ("In the Spectator may be traced the foundations of all that is sound and healthy in modern English thought."
