IMRE LAKATOS (1922-1974), the ratio -defender
The Hungarian Lakatos tried to save Popper 's falsificationism from the criticism inherent in Kuhn 's paradigms, and that's why he nuances falsificationism. In his view Kuhn 's discontinuous revolutions in science don't fit in a rational science history. So far Lakatos had every right to have this opininion, but this obviously rigid rational scientist couldn't imagine that there was more than ratio . His view of a rational world included predictable crises, that didn't change the basics of rationality
Lakatos on the one side admits that science isn't linear, but on the other side still believes in a continuous rational science. In fact he wants to save rationality in the shape of that time. Kuhn was surely also a rational scientist, but with his discontinuous paradigms stumbled on the ir rationality
Lakatos merrily poked in the Popper-Kuhn controverse , but in fact he tried with all his might to save the division between rationalism and ir rationalism (the split that already Kant tried to repair). But ir

Imre Lakatos was given the name Imre Lipschitz at birth, born into a Jewish family as his name clearly indicated. His life would be dominated by the chaos that resulted from the Nazi rise to power and World War II, the war breaking out when Imre was in his final years at school. It was a difficult period for Hungary, with the country unsure whether to side with Hitler or with the allies, but in many ways Hungary had few options. Hitler decided that he could not leave his vital communications at the mercy of an uncommitted Hungarian regime. In March 1944 Hitler offered Hungary the choice of either cooperating with Germany or the German armies would occupy the country. Hungary chose cooperation and appointed a government to collaborate with Hitler. The Germans did as they pleased, suppressing opponents and arresting anyone who spoke out against them. Jews were compelled to wear a yellow star and their property was taken away. Imre had spent the war years at the University of Debrecen and he graduated in 1944 with a degree in mathematics, physics and philosophy. To avoid the Nazi persecution of Jews he changed his name to

Life
Lakatos was born Imre Lipschitz in Debrecen Hungary in . He received a degree in mathematics, physics , and philosophy from the University of Debrecen in . He became an active communist during the Second World War After the war, he continued his education in Budapest (under Gy¶rgy Luk¡cs , among others) and worked as a senior official in the Hungarian ministry of education. However, he found himself on the losing side of internal arguments within the Hungarian communist party and was imprisoned on charges of revisionism from to . More of Lakatos' activities in Hungary after World War II have recently become known. (see Kadvany) After his release, Lakatos returned to academic life, doing mathematical research and translating George P³lya 's How to Solve It into Hungarian. Still nominally a communist, his political views had shifted markedly and he was involved with at least one dissident student group in the lead-up to the

Imre Lakatos was a Hungarian mathematician and philosopher of science who was arrested in 1950 and imprisoned for nearly four years during the a brutal campaign of repression and terror. After he was released his status as an ex-political prisoner made it very difficult for him to find work, despite his excellent qualifications, but a friend managed to help him get a job at the Mathematical Research Institute in the Hungarian Academy of Science. In 1970, he published an essay entitled

Imre Lakatos was born in Hungary; he spent hard years, as a Jewish man, during and after the second world war. And he fled from Hungary after the revolution against the Russian regime in 1956, and eventually came to England. Lakatos was influenced by Karl Popper and George Polya (mathematician), and he finished his doctoral work by writing a thesis on the Logic of Mathematical Discovery submitted to Cambridge in 1961. (Lakatos in 1961; photo by courtesy of LSE Lakatos website , maintained by Alex Bellamy) From 1960 he taught at the London School of Economics, and eventually succeeded Popper's position there, but their views on the philosophy of science diverged. Lakatos is most famous for his "methodology of research programs" which was formed by a confrontation with Kuhn's view on paradigm. He defended, with Popper, rationalism in the philosophy of science, but took in some elements from Kuhn and inductivism. According to Lakatos, scientists work under some tradition called a "research program", which has some theoretical assumptions called "hard core", and they try to solve specific problems by adding and modifying auxiliary hypotheses and others. Since the "hard core" is immune to falsification by their "methodological decisions", problem-solving is done by modifications and innovations in auxiliary hypotheses and assumptions which are collectively called "protective belt" around the "hard core". This process produces a history of a research program, a succession of modified theories sharing the "hard core". Lakatos thought that we can meaningfully speak of rationality of adopting, modifying, or abandoning and replacing, such a research program.

LAKATOS, Imre, 1922-1974, Professor Of Logic
Covering Dates:1945-1978
Life/Work: Imre Lakatos was born in Hungary with the family name of Lipsitz. Due to anti-semitism his mother took him to live in Debrecen. He attended Debrecen University and graduated in 1944. During the Nazi occupation of Hungary he changed his name to Molnar and joined the underground resistance. During the war he became a committed communist and after the war once more changed his name, this time to Lakatos.
In 1947 he was made a secretary in the Ministry of Education and became involved in the reform of Higher Education in Hungary. In 1948 he wrote a doctoral thesis on concept formation in science and received his degree from Budapest University. However his political prominence and "revisionist" tendencies meant that he fell foul of the campaign against the "Hungarian-Tito-ists". He was arrested in 1950 and spent the next three years in jail.
He was released in 1953 and in 1954 Alfred Renyi obtained a post for him in the Mathematical Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Science. His job was to translate important mathematical works into Hungarian. It was here that he first came into contact with western books and journals, in particular the work of Karl Popper and Polya.

Searching for the Holy in the Ascent of Imre Lakatos
John Wettersten Mannheim University approach to the philosophy of mathematics and science enabled him to overcome all competing philosophies. His use of the approach Hegel developed in his Phenomenology enabled him to show how mathematics and science develop, how they are open-ended, and that they are not subject to rules, even though their rationality may be understood after the fact. Hegel showed Lakatos how to falsify the past to make progress in the present. A critique based on normal standards of fairness and honesty finds this argument an attack on rationality. The similarity of the methods

'Paul,' he said, 'you have such strange ideas. Why don't you write them down? I shall write a reply, we publish the whole thing and I promise youwe shall have a lot of fun.'" Although Lakatos died before he could write his reply, For and Against Method reconstructs his original counter-arguments from lectures and correspondence previously unpublished in English, allowing us to enjoy the "fun" two of this century's most eminent philosophers had, matching their wits and ideas on the subject of the scientific method. For and Against Method opens with an imaginary dialogue between Lakatos and Feyerabend, which Matteo Motterlini has constructed, based on their published works, to synthesize their positions and arguments. Part one presents the transcripts of the last lectures on method that Lakatos delivered. Part two, Feyerabend's response, consists of a previously published essay on anarchism, which began the attack on Lakatos's position that Feyerabend later continued in
