Turin (Italy), January 25, 1736, d. Paris, April 10, 1813] Lagrange developed many general ideas for handling mathematical problems, such as the use of higher dimensional spaces to describe the motion of a body. He put the subject known as calculus of variations, a powerful tool for finding minimum or maximum functions, into its present form. Although his famous book without pictures is called M©chanique analytique ("analytical mechanics"), he was very much a pure mathematician, contributing, for example, to number theory. His main influence at a more familiar level comes from the metric system, whose foundation was in large part according to his plan. Joseph-Louis Lagrange became professor of mathematics at the royal Artillery School in his hometown of Turin at age 19. His masterwork Mechanique Analytique extended and formalized Isaac Newton's work on mechanics. It is also significant for its use of differential equations. Lagrange published the book without a single diagram or construction; his discussion of mechanics was purely algebraic. Lagrange was the president of the commission set up in 1793 to standardize French weights and measures, and in this sense was the "father of the metric system"

Joseph Louis Lagrange ( January 25, 1736 - April 10, 1813 was an Italian mathematicia/ astronomer ; who later lived in France and Prussia. Lagrange was a favourite of the king, who used frequently to discourse to him on the advantages of perfect regularity of life. Lagrange , who was present, now discussed the whole subject afresh, and in a memoir communicated to the Academy in 1808 explained how, by the variation of arbitrary constants, the periodical and secular inequalities of any system of mutually interacting bodies could be determined. www.encyclopedia4u.com /j/joseph-louis-lagrange.html (3006 words)
Joseph Louis Lagrange
Lagrange was a great Physicist and Mathematician of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Lagrange served as professor of geometry at the Royal Artillery School in Turin from 1755 to 1766 and helped to found the Royal Academy of Science there in 1757. Lagrange survived the French Revolution while others did not.

Biography
Early years
He was born (as Giuseppe Lodovico Lagrangia) in Turin . His father, who had charge of the Kingdom of Sardinia Edmund Halley which he came across by accident. Alone and unaided he threw himself into mathematical studies; at the end of a year's incessant toil he was already an accomplished mathematician, and was made a lecturer in the artillery school.
Letters
The first fruit of Lagrange's labours here was his letter, written when he was still only nineteen, to Leonhard Euler , in which he solved the isoperimetrical problem which for more than half a century had been a subject of discussion. To effect the solution (in which he sought to determine the form of a function so that a formula in which it entered should satisfy a certain condition) he enunciated the principles of the calculus of variations . Euler recognized the generality of the method adopted, and its superiority to that used by himself; and with rare courtesy he withheld a paper he had previously written, which covered some of the same ground, in order that the young Italian might have time to complete his work, and claim the undisputed invention of the new calculus. The name of this branch of analysis was suggested by Euler. This paper at once placed Lagrange in the front rank of mathematicians then living.
