I periodically get requests for suggested readings by people who want a manageable introduction to economics. I will take a stab at it. [Note: using these links enriches MaxSpeak, for which you have the thanks of a grateful nation.] There are always the Econ 101 textbooks. You can find them in used bookstores, and the basic theory doesn't vary all that much. I've used Heibroner and Thurow, and Baumol and Blinder. I don't know if either are still in print, but as I said you don't need a new one. Joseph Stiglitz has an intro textbook as well. I think there is plenty to learn from these. You might be able to find one here I would be remiss in not citing textbooks that rebut the conventional wisdom. One is by Steve Keen of the University of Western Sydney in Australia, and another by Robin Hahnel of American University. A book I like is Memos to the President, by Charles L. Schultze. I disagree with some of it, but it's written by somebody who knows how to talk to politicians who don't know any economics. More to my way of thinking is Paul Davidson's Economics for a Civilized Society . [Note: the Powell's web page incorrectly cites the author's name.] Another filter is to graze by author.

6/8 - Brendan: Bad guys and stories in the "energy crisis" permanent link
Email this to a friend
In a new edition of his Political War newsletter , conservative David Horowitz outlines his strategy for winning the energy debate. Horowitz first offers an accurate analysis of the reason Republicans are losing - namely, Democratic are out-demagoguing them with "oil men"/special interest rhetoric: We are losing because the Democrats are attacking us with images ("price gouging energy companies") but we are opposing them with arguments ("it's about supply and demand") that are over many voters' heads. Horowitz's argument for what the GOP should do is characteristically inflammatory: [W]e haven't told the public that the Democrats and environmental extremists are waging a war against them against their prosperity and freedom. Horowitz then outlines a "story" designed to be "emotionally powerful". "[M]ore importantly", it "generates images of Democrats as bad guys". He says Democrats "have choked off America's energy, and with it a significant slice of Americans' freedom". Now, he says, they want to "[c]ontinue the war". "[T]heir solutions are big government controls socialist schemes that will cost taxpayers more and will not work." Could the energy debate be any more cynical? First, Bush turned California's electricity problems and rising gas prices into an energy crisis to escape blame and build momentum for his energy plan. Then, the Democrats mostly accepted the premise and started beating up Bush and the Republicans as anti-environment. Now Horowitz wants to tell a "story" that Democrats are bad people who are anti-freedom and support "socialist schemes".

8/3 - Ben: Bush sums up his achievements, and his spin permanent link
Email this to a friend
In a Rose Garden speech today to celebrate the accomplishments of his first six months in office, President Bush took an opportunity not only to list what he considers to be his administration's major achievements, but to spin the past and future to his advantage. The spin starts early on as the President says, "We are ending deadlock and drift and making our system work on behalf of the American people." What exactly Bush means by this phrase is unclear. There is certainly no evidence that there have been fewer "deadlocks" in the Bush Administration than under President Clinton. And it isn't even clear what the word "drift" means in politics, except that it, along with deadlock, is certainly something good to be against. Bush also states "We have broken six years of gridlock in the task of protecting patients from arbitrary medical decisions made by bureaucrats." In fact, however, while the House did pass a version of the Patients' Bill of Rights acceptable to the President, the Senate-passed version has many differences. Most articles on the topic, including a recent piece in the Washington Post, have predicted further gridlock as the Democratic Senate and Republican House attempt to find a mutually acceptable version of their bills in conference. It still seems highly unlikely that the six years of gridlock Bush claims partial credit for overcoming is at an end.

This paper analyzes the impact of changes in monetary policy on equity prices, with the objectives both of measuring the average reaction of the stock market and also of understanding the economic sources of that reaction. We find that, on average, a hypothetical unanticipated 25-basis-point cut in the federal funds rate target is associated with about a one percent increase in broad stock indexes. Adapting a methodology due to Campbell (1991) and Campbell and Ammer (1993), we find that the effects of unanticipated monetary policy actions on expected excess returns account for the largest part of the response of stock prices. Welcome to Bryan Alexander 's bookmark page. This is a somewhat idiosyncratic page, in that I have constructed the links and their categories based on multiple professional and personal needs over the past few years. I'm revising the page, currently, to make it more accessible. Of course, contact me if you see something, or have comments, or suggestions.
The daily and weekly links reading schedule is very subjective, driven mostly by what I work on: learning and cyberculture.
The order is entirely alphabetical, by category. There are internal links below to most of the categories, selected a bit arbitrarily, for internal navigation. update check: July 25, 2005 mystuff:
