Robert Kuttner's False Advertising By Brian Carnell Wednesday, October 11, 2000 Robert Kuttner thinks he's got the voucher movement dead to rights in a Boston Globe article, False Advertising For Vouchers (before going further I should point out that I don't support vouchers either, but for very different reasons than Kuttner). Kuttner points to ads running in New York, very similar to ones running here in Michigan where I live (and where a voucher proposal is on the ballot this election cycle), that points out American children are behind children in many European countries. Vouchers, the ads claim, will solve all that. Wait just a minute says Kuttner that's false advertising. Look at each of these European countries; they are hardly bastions of free market education. In fact they are all, with an exception here and there, completely state run systems (such as Sweden and the Netherlands who come out on top). Just fully fund school systems and everything will be well, Kuttner writes. But Kuttner leaves something out per pupil spending in Europe is not dramatically higher than it is in the United States, even in heavily socialized nations such as Sweden. Americans already spend comparable amounts of money on education as their European counterparts and yet in return get an inferior product (even taking into account Kuttner's generally accurate criticism of the ranking system used in this particular advertisement).

Memo to Robert Kuttner: Read the Damn Bill By Brian Carnell Monday, June 3, 2002 MSNBC's Mickey Kaus caught Robert Kuttner in an obvious lie in a Boston Globe column that Kuttner recently wrote. The issue at hand is a welfare bill that the Bush administration is pushing through Congress. Kuttner complains that the bill, which was recently passed by the House of Representatives, doesn't allow people on welfare to receive training. The administration, against the advice of most Republican governors, would tighten the screws and limit the funds. Specifically, the bill requires most mothers receiving benefits to work a 40-hour week in paid employment. This would make it impossible for most low-income single mothers to enroll in part-time classes or training programs - the very strategies that have allowed many to escape poverty. And it would make caseworkers spend less time helping people find jobs and more time tracking job attendance. Even more than under the present law, mothers who stayed home with a sick child would be penalized. Bzzzt. Try again Mr. Kuttner. Here's the section of the final bill that outlines how welfare recipients will fulfill their work participation requirement

The Internet, Java and the Auto Industry By Stew Block , Supply Chain Market Development Manager
Sun Microsystems Computer Company
(Mountain View, CA) To improve product quality and customer service, automakers recognize the need to forge flexible global supply chains. The walls of their enterprises must be expanded—"virtual enterprises" created—to link them more tightly to their customers and suppliers. Thus the automotive industry is undergoing a fundamental transition of unparalleled size and scope. Automakers increasingly are out-sourcing the component design and manufacturing process to their suppliers. At the same time, they are paring down their supplier base to a manageable number. In the process, highly structured supply chains are being forged, in which automakers work directly with Tier-1 suppliers having responsibility for the design and development of major sub-assemblies, and these Tier-1 suppliers, in turn, assist their suppliers in the design and development of components that go into the sub-assemblies. The result is a major realignment of the automotive industry. This realignment or restructuring has been seriously impeded to date by a lack of the information systems infrastructure needed to support it. To create tighter linkages between automakers and their suppliers and customers, their business processes up and down the supply chain must become more tightly interlinked. Business process flow must be synchronized between the OEMs and their suppliers to meet the demands of just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing and the pressure to get products to market faster.
