5.2.6. Planarly embedded graphs, maps, and faces
Learning objectives Planar graphs and planar embeddings Bidirected graphs and maps Face cycles and faces Order preserving embeddings and planar maps The functions and Graphs serve for recording relationships between objects. To store graphs in a computer, it suffices to store the combinatorial structure of the nodes and edges, for example, in adjacency lists. We, however, being humans, prefer drawings that quickly provide us with an overlook over a graph. Therefore drawing graphs is a big issue. We shall deal here with drawings that are made on a sheet of paper, that is, drawings in the two-dimensional plane (sometimes graphs are drawn onto a sphere or a torus, as the borderlines on a globe, for example; this kind of drawings shall not be of further interest here).
Planar embeddings
Of course, there are infinitely many ways to draw a graph onto a sheet of paper (to be more precise, into the two-dimensional plane). Of all these, the drawings in which the edges do not cross are of primary interest, just because they are least confusing for the eye. Such a drawing is called a

LEON LUKASZEWICZ
Development of computers in Poland began at the end of 1948 with the formation of the Group ior Mathematical Apparatus of the Mathematical Institute in Warsaw. The beginning was not easy because at that time Warsaw was still re¢uilding affer the destruction of World War II. The first analogue computer called the "Analyzer of Difierential Equations, " was completed in 1954 and then regularly used for several years. The first successful digital computer called XYZ was completed in 1958. It performed about 800 operations per second and became a milestone in the development of Polish computers. Soon the XYZ computer was improved and, under the name ZAM 2, was manufactured and installed in many places in Poland and abroad. As asset of XYZ and ZAM 2 was the system of Automatic Coding, introduced in 1960 and offen called a Polish FORTRAN.

This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. Definition df-op Description: Kuratowski's ordered pair definition. Definition 9.1 of [ Quine ] p. 58. For proper classes it is not meaningful but is well-defined and we allow it for convenience. For the justifying theorem (for sets) see opth . There are other ways to define ordered pairs; the basic requirement is that two ordered pairs are equal iff their respective members are equal. In 1914 Norbert Wiener gave the first successful definition , justified by opthwiener , which was simplified by Kazimierz Kuratowski in 1921 to our present definition. An even simpler definition is justified by opthreg , but it requires the Axiom of Regularity for its justification and is not commonly used. A definition that also works for proper classes is , justified by opthprc . If we restrict our sets to nonnegative integers, an ordered pair definition that involves only elementary arithmetic is provided by . Finally, an ordered pair of real numbers can be represented by a complex number as shown by

    Summary.
In the paper we give formal descriptions of the two Kuratowski limit oprators: Li $S$ and Ls $S$, where $S$ is an arbitrary sequence of subsets of a fixed topological space. In the two last sections we prove basic properties of these lower and upper topological limits, which may be found e.g. in [ ]. In the sections 2-4, we present three operators which are associated in some sense with the above mentioned, that is lim inf $F$, lim sup $F$, and limes $F$, where $F$ is a sequence of subsets of a fixed 1-sorted structure.
