Mennonites are a confessional group which migrated from sixteenth century Holland to Poland to Russia/Ukraine, and then disbursed to many countries. There are over half a million Russian Mennonite descendants in North America. They have been returning in considerable numbers as scholars and tourists in the last decade. A renovated former historic girls school now serves as a Mennonite regional relief centre, specializing in medical and educational projects. MCC and other Mennonite agencies are also actively at work in Ukraine.
Thirty seven papers from researchers in seven countries on three continents were presented at the June conference in Ukraine, most of them from

Ivan's Childhood
(1962) USSR
Directed by Andrei Tarkovskii
Written by Vladimir Bogomolov and Mikhail Papava. Cinematography by Vadim Iusov. Art Direction by Evgenii Cherniaev. Music by Vyacheslav Ovchinnikov. With Nikolai Burliaev, Valentin Zubkov, Evgenii Zharikov, Stepan Krylov, Nikolai Grin'ko.
In Russian with English subtitles
Ivan's Childhood, Andrei Tarkovsky's feature-length debut, is also known in English under the title My Name Is Ivan . It recounts the story of a boy-soldier who volunteers to work as an agent for Soviet partisans during WWII after his family has been slaughtered by Nazi soldiers. Unlike his adult fellow-partisans, this ten-year-old boy maintains a stoic exterior, seemingly oblivious to the brutality of war.
Based on the story Ivan by Vladimir Bogomolov, the film makes extensive use of visual citations from Dovzhenko's Earth and other early Soviet film texts. Tarkovsky's provocative experimentation, given the context of Soviet restraints, further suggests a re-engagement with the aesthetics of the Early Soviet period in its use of crane shots, double exposure, negative film background, diagonals, and long tracking shots, as well as its combination of documentary footage with passages of unabashed lyricism.
Many of the characteristic oppositional thematic repetitions of the later Tarkovsky make their first appearances in this film: fire and dripping water; shots of the earth and the cries of off-screen birds. His blending of expressionist techniques with surrealism and documentary lends this film an extraordinary emotional range and variety, marking it as one of Tarkovsky's best films.

T The opening of the Public Library which coincided with what Pushkin called the time of "glory and delight" was recorded in all the St Petersburg newspapers. The poet and critic Piotr Pletnev wrote that all men and women whose "Russian hearts beat stronger on hearing the word Motherland" had perceived the event as "a glorious occurrence" important for the future of the country. The library remained a popular topic in subsequent years too. The papers described it as "a tmly national repository" and noted that any reader "had free entry to it, whatever title or rank he may have held." The Olenin years, in the course of which over 15,000 library cards were issued and some 100,000 volumes given out to readers, also saw the first attempts to analyse reading patterns, the range of subjects which interested users of the library and the demand for works by particular authors (Lomonosov, Karamzin, Derzhavin, Krylov, Zhukovsky, Gnedich, Batiushkov, and others). The same period was marked too by the inception of a reference and bibliographical service within the library as members of staff began to select literature systematically in response to readers' requests (books, for example, on the history of the 1812 War, Suvorov's campaigns in Italy and Switzerland, or public education in Russia). At the request of Stroganov and Olenin, the book-dealer Vastly Sopikov, a member of the merchant class, was taken into state service at the library. Sopikov had become famous for his knowledge in the field of Russian bibliography and the book trade. He was entmsted with managing the Russian stocks and the library saw to the publication of his major work An Essay in Russian Bibliography which the author per-spicaciously believed "will be a classic not only in Russia but also in foreign parts". Sopikov's work contained "an accurate and thorough description" of books published in Russia from the introduction of printing to the beginning of the nineteenth century and still remains a valuable handbook for librarians and bibliographers today.

Mikhail Kupriyanov, Porfiry Krylov and Nikolai Sokolov were all students of the famous Russian artist, Dmitri Orlov . In 1924 they established their own studio in Moscow. It was decided to sign their work Kukryniksy (an anagram of parts of their names).
In the 1920s the men concentrated on book illustration and literary caricature. However from 1933 they switched to political cartoons and these appeared regularly in the journals, Pravada and Krokodil . During the Second World War the group concentrated on producing propaganda posters.
All three men worked individually and their landscapes and portraits have been exhibited in all the major Russian art galleries.

"Molochna 2004: Mennonites and Their Neighbours (1804-2004)":
An International Conference, Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, June 2-5, 2004
PETER LETKEMANN* The year 2004 marks the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Molochna Mennonite settlement in southern Russia (present-day Ukraine). To mark this historic anniversary, scholars from eight countries on four continents gathered in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, from June 2-5 for an academic conference entitled "Molochna 2004: Mennonites and Their Neighbours (1804-2004)." The first nine villages of the Molochna settlement were founded in the spring of 1804; by 1809 there were already nineteen villages. From 1819 to 1848 (the year of Johann Cornies' death) another twenty-seven villages were founded; between 1851 and 1863 another eleven were added"making a total of fifty-seven villages. The settlement also included a number of large private estates, including Juschanlee (J. Cornies, 1830), Steinbach (Klaas Wiens, 1812) and Felsenthal (David Reimer, 1820). By 1914, the settlement was the largest Mennonite colony in Tsarist Russia with a population of 27,127 covering an area of over 306,000 acres. Scholars came from Austria, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Paraguay, Russia, Ukraine and the United States to explore all aspects of the history of the Molochna Mennonites and their interactions with their non-German neighbours. Unfortunately, there were no representatives from Bethel College, Canadian Mennonite University or Conrad Grebel College"all former centers of Russian Mennonite studies in North America.

Restoration of the Russian Academy of Sciences In 1991, in connection with the changes that occurred in the political, social and economic situation in the  country, including the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the formation of the Russian Federation, the Academy received a new status in 1991 and was given back its old name: the Russian Academy of Sciences. [Decree of the President of Russian Federation of December 2, 1991]. Academician Yuri S. Osipov was elected President of the Academy.
The scientists of the Academy made great contributions to the development of practically all directions of modern science. Developing the traditions of national scientific schools, the researchers of the Academy enriched many areas of theoretical and applied mathematics. Studies of Ivan M. Vinogradov and his school into the theory of numbers, as well as research into the theory of functions carried out by the school of Nikolai N. Luzin gained wide international recognition. New approaches were proposed in the theory of differential equations and functional analysis, in the theory of probabilities, algebra, topology, mathematical logic, and in the mathematical theory of optimal control (Andrei N. Kolmogorov, Sergei L. Sobolev, Ivan G. Petrovsky, Lev S. Pontryagin, Anatoly I. Maltsev, and others). Substantial contributions to the development of applied mathematics were made by Mikhail A. Lavrentyev, Mstislav V.Keldysh, and others. A number of problems related to mathematical applications in mechanics, economics, physics and technology were successfully solved.

Heckling Hitler
  • HECKLING HITLER: CARICATURES OF THE THIRD REICH, by Zbynek Zeman. Hanover, New Hampshire: University Press of New England, 1987, Pb., 128 pp., illustrated, $14.95, ISBN 0-87451-403-7.
Reviewed by Jack Wikoff Heckling Hitler , a recent selection of the Jewish Book Club, is a collection of 178 anti-Hitler, anti-National Socialist and anti-German political cartoons of the Weimar Republic and Nazi eras. The author, Zbynek Zeman, lives and teaches in England and has written several books on the propaganda of the Second World War. This volume of political cartoons, which is accompanied by an extensive text, will be of interest to the Revisionist solely because of its historically curious and valuable illustrations. Unfortunately, the text is riddled with anti-Hitlerian platitudes, unhistorical cliches and myths. Author Zeman displays a complete lack of objectivity throughout his textual commentary. Zeman is clearly no Germanophile. In the introduction he brazenly claims that Germans have no sense of humor. The reader is repeatedly told that Germany was an ideologically and socially backward nation.. From the first chapter, titled "Young Hitler: The Making of a Famous Monster," the following chapters continue in this disparaging vein to discuss chronologically the events which inspired the political cartoons in this volume. Political caricature has traditionally flourished in mass circulation daily newspapers. The staff cartoonist, working to fight deadlines, produces a visual statement in quick response to rapidly changing news developments. In
