Deceased Name: Edna Craig Reich Services for Edna Craig Reich will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2003, in the chapel of John Kramer and Son with Rev. Aubrey Whitlock officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Pineville under the direction of John Kramer and Son. Edna Craig Reich, 89, of Alexandria, died Sunday, March 2, 2003, in Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital. Mrs. Reich was member of Horseshoe Drive Baptist Church for many years. She was a wonderful Mother, and Grandmother and Aunt.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Monty C. Reich three sisters, Tressie Nalley, Gladys Crosby, and Carrie Tabor and one brother, Arvie Craig. Edna Reich is survived by: one daughter, Sandra Kojis of Alexandria, Louisiana two granddaughters, Regina Turner, Angie Neal three great-grandsons, Cody Neal, Jacob Neal and Weston Turner.
Pallbearers will be: Jessie Doyle, David Tabor, James Neal, Brian Neal, Sonny Craig and Tres McKneely. Friends are asked to call from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Monday at John Kramer and Son.

ROBERT BOYLE Miami Beach Police Department Killed in motorcycle accident on Aug. 31, 1936 THE EVENT
Sgt. Robert Boyle, 30, a two-year veteran of the Miami Beach Police Department was fatally injured in a motorcycle accident that occurred while he was on duty on August 30, 1936. He died approximately 9 hours later (on August 31). Sgt. Boyle became the second Miami Beach officer to be killed in a traffic accident in 1936 and the third officer to be killed in the line of duty in the history of the Department.
Sgt. Boyle was on patrol on his police motorcycle on Sunday night, August 30, 1936, when he was hit by a Nash Coupe driven by Edward L. Lustgarten, 29, at the corner of Washington Avenue and 15th Street. Lustgarten was turning north into Washington Avenue from 15th Street when his automobile collided with Boyle's motorcycle which was "traveling in the same direction." Boyle was "hurled" 33 feet from his motorcycle by the impact of the collision, landing against a street curb.
Officer Boyle suffered a fractured skull and was given "first aid treatment" treatment at the scene by Dr. A. Lustgarten, a passenger in the car that hit Boyle and the father of the driver. Boyle was then taken by a W.H. Combs ambulance to St. Francis hospital. Doctors at the hospital "held scant hope of Boyle's recovery."

Throughout the history of mathematics, branches of scientific study have regularly used mathematical methods to explain natural phenomena. This is very true in the field of astronomy, and particularly in the case of celestial mechanics . Celestial mechanics is defined as the branch of astronomy dealing with the mathematical theory of the motions of celestial bodies. The curiosities of celestial mechanics date back in to ancient times. The ancient Greeks, for instance, gave divine status to the cosmos, and therefore felt the need for further exploration. At this time, astrology established itself and became a part of everyday life. The principle that stars could influence man's life "...received some kind of justification from the notion of cosmos, a cosmos which is so well arranged that no part is independent of the other parts and of the whole. Was this not proved by the tides, caused by Moon and Sun, by the menstruation of women, by the farmers' moonlore... (Sarton, 165)." During the third century BC, Aristarchos of Samos combined Euclidean geometry with the assumption that the Sun is the center of the "universe" rather than the Earth . In his model the planets circle the Sun, the Moon orbits the Earth, and the stars are fixed, while their apparent "rotation" is an illusion caused by the Earth's rotation. This heliocentric model was later reaffirmed by Nicholas Copernicus (c. 1520).

Husseman of Washington; daughters Tammy D'Aquino of Temecula and Tina Perez of San Diego; brother, Thomas Husseman; and grandchildren James, Beiana and Derek.
A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. today, June 30, at Stout Family Funeral Home in Temecula. Private interment is planned.
The family suggests donations to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309, www.komendonations.org.

The notion of an "axiom" plays an absolutely crucial role in any Aristotelian philosophical system, including Objectivism. Because axioms constitute the ultimate tap-root of our entire system of knowledge, we ought to be very clear on what we mean by the term "axiom," what axioms there are, and how we know them to be true. From Axioms to Postulates In any logical structure of propositions, there must be some starting point. Not every true statement in the system can be proved by deductive reasoning from other statements, or we would have an infinite regression. These primary or source statements, on which the others are based and from which the others are proved, are known as axioms. This is the most general sense of the term. The question instantly arises: How do we know that the axioms we wish to use are true? Historically, the ancient Greeks conceived of axioms as being self-evident truths. Aristotle, as we shall see presently, refined and extended this view in a way that made the concept of "axiom" much stronger. However, the looser view was retained by Euclid (or at least his followers; see Kline 1972, 59-60) in his systematic organization of geometry as an axiom-based set of deductive proofs. Euclidean geometry was based on a series of assertions about geometry that were considered unquestionably true or "self- evident." But "self-evident," in practice, generally is interpreted as "obvious." This invites the obvious rejoinder, "Well, it isn't obvious to me." This was a problem, right at the start, for Euclid. Certainly it seemed self-evident or obvious that, for instance, "it is possible to describe a circle with any center and radius". But another axiom of his system struck him, and subsequent geometers, as not quite self-evident: "That if a straight line falling on two straight lines makes the interior angles on the same side less than two right angles, the two straight lines, if produced indefinitely, meet on that side on which the angles are less than the two right angles."

Prime Theorem of the Century
"Prime numbers have always fascinated mathematicians," Underwood Dudley of DePauw University in Indiana wrote in a 1978 textbook. "They appear among the integers seemingly at random, and yet not quite: There seems to be some order or pattern, just a little below the surface, just a little out of reach." A prime is a whole number (other than 1) that is divisible only by itself and 1. That simple definition leads to the following sequence of numbers: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 61, 67, and so on. As the numbers of the sequence increase, the intervals between primes, on the average, get longer, though in a somewhat haphazard way. In other words, primes gradually become more scarce as numbers get larger, and one can imagine that, at some point, they might run out. More than 2,000 years ago, however, the Greek mathematician Euclid proved that the sequence of primes continues forever. Suppose there is a finite number of primes, he argued. That means there's also a largest prime. Multiply all the primes together, then add 1. The new number is certainly bigger than the largest prime. If the initial assumption is correct, the new number can't be a prime. Otherwise, it would be the largest. Hence, it must be a composite number and divisible by a smaller number. However, because of the way the number was constructed, all known primes, when divided into the new number, leave a remainder of 1. Therefore, the initial assumption can't be correct, and there can be no largest prime.
