Clifford A. Pickover
Oxford University Press, 2000 "The prolific Pickover dazzles us once more with his book Wonders of Numbers . This big book of mathematical ideas provides hours, days, months if not years of entertaining numbers, puzzles, problems and novelties to explore. The book runs the gamut with such things as X-File numbers, Mozart numbers, Katydid sequences, and on and on. There's something for everyone's interest."
- Theoni Pappas, author of The Joy of Mathematics "Clifford Pickover has written another marvelous book. Through conversations between whimsical Dr. Googol and his pupil Monica, you can test your wits on an incredible variety of unusual mathematical puzzles and games. Along the way there are fascinating historical facts and math gossip to enjoy. You can't help absorbing a great deal of important math as you pick your way through Pickover's delightful pick of fresh, little-known gems of recreational mathematics."

MEMOIRS OF CHILDHOOD (also known in English as A RUSSIAN CHILDHOOD) Kovalevskaya's most well known and highly praised work in literature. She relates in beautifully poetic prose her early childhood up to the age of 15 years. The story beautifully expresses the beginnings of her complex relationship to her family and to her sister in particular. Kovalevskaya, as is her trademark, places the story within the wider context of the social problems of the time and place. Frequently translated into English. The most recent translation by Beatrice Stillman, 1978. Novellas: NIGILISTKA
A NIHILIST GIRL The first edition was printed in Geneva, 1892. This is the story of a young girl who strives to be of use to people by participating in revolutionary circles. The prototype for the heroine is Vera Sergievna Goncharova, niece of N.N. Goncharova, Pushkin's wife. Kovalevskaya was acquainted with Vera Goncharova. The novel appeared in two versions in English, one entitled Vera Vorontsova, the other Vera Barantsova. The novella appeared in Russia in 1906, but was then banned. A Czech translation was allowed into Russia in 1908. The novel was also translated into German, French, and Polish. The work is considered one of two outstanding works by Kovalevskaya, the other being her MEMOIRS OF CHILDHOOD. Modern Language Association (MLA) is publishing Natasha Kolchevska's new translation of NIHILIST GIRL in October 2001.

eo Tolstoy is a Russian author, one of the greatest of all novelists. Tolstoy's life in often seen to form two distinct parts: first comes the author of great novels, and later a prophet and moral reformer.
    L
eo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was born at Yasnaya Polyana, in Tula Province, the fourth of five children. Peter the Great had conferred the title of Count on his ancestor in the early 18th century. His mother shortly passed away and having no surviving photographs Tolstoy had no recollection of what his mother looked liked.
T olstoy's fiction grew originally out of his diaries, in which he tried to understand his own feelings and actions so as to control them. He read widely fiction and philosophy - Plato and Rousseau, Dickens and Sterne; through the 1850s he also read and admired Goethe, Stendhal, Thackeray, and George Eliot. T olstoy's major work, "War and Peace", appeared between the years 1865 and 1869. The epic tale depicted the story of five families against the background of Napoleon's invasion of Russia. Its vast canvas includes 580 characters, many historical, others fictional. The story moves from family life to the headquarters of Napoleon, from the court of Alexander l to the battlefields of Austerlitz and Borodino I n the 1880s Tolstoy wrote such philosophical works as "A Confession" and "What I Believe in", which were banned in 1884. He started to see himself more as a sage and moral leader than an artist. In 1884 occurred his first attempt to leave home. He gave up his estate to his family, and tried to live as a poor, celibate peasant

Sofia Vasilevna Kovalevskaja (geb.

calculus. Much of the way analysis is taught today is due to Weierstrass.
He had many great students while at Berlin, but one of particular note is Sofia Kovalevskaya. This was still a time when sexist policies barred woman from attending university, but seeing great spirit and promise in Kovalevskaya, Weierstrass gave her private lessons. Sofia went on to receive recognition as a mathematician. She was bestowed an honorary doctorate and eventually held a position at university in Stockholm.
Weierstrass had many important results, including the first proof that the complex numbers were the only commutative algebraic extension of the real numbers. Students who took Math 263 might recall the continuous everywhere differentiable nowhere function given as an absolutely convergent power series. That function, along with much of the fundamental work on power series and convergence (much more significantly over the complex numbers), is due to Weierstrass. His p-function is a common example of an elliptic function given in complex analysis. He published less in volume than many of his ability, but he spent much of his time rebuilding what he saw as shaky theories from the ground up in his characteristic rigorous fashion, so it is understandable. No one would argue that he did not have a profound impact on mathematics. Weierstrass died in 1897. Next Page
