Introduction
Sofia Kovalevskaya was born in the 1800's to a noble Russian family. During this time women were discouraged in the field of mathematics. Karl Weierstrass is known as the father of modern analysis. He didn't start out in the field of mathematics though, and spent about four years of college drunk. Later on he discovered his love for mathematics, and became a great mathematics professor. He made many discoveries in the area of complex numbers, elliptic functions, abelian functions, and calculus of variations. Many great mathematicians came to study under him, including Sofia Kovalevski.

Biography of Kovalevski
Sofia Kovalevskaya was born on January 15, 1850 in Moscow Russia to a family of nobility. She died from pnemonia on February 10, 1891 in Stockholm Sweden. Sofia got most of her schooling from tutors, and governesses, since her family was fairly well off. She had her first encounter with calculus in her nursery when she was 11. During the time there was a wallpaper shortage, so her walls had been plastered with pages of Ostrogradski's lecture notes on differential and integral analysis. She became v ery interested in math, and studied her wallpaper with increasing intrigue. Sofia had such a strong love for mathematics, that she began to neglect her other studies. This made her father angry so he decided to stop Sofia's math lessons. Sofia was very dedicated to mathematics, so she borrowed a copy of Boudreau's

Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya
On January 15, 1850 in Moscow, Russia, Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya was born as the second child of Vasily Korvin-Krukovsky and Velizavela Shubert, both well-educated members of Russian nobility. Sofia was educated by tutors and governesses in her family's country estate in Palabino and St. Petersburg. Sofia became interested in mathematics at a very young age. Her uncle, Pyotr Vasilievich Krukovsky, spoke about mathematics to her. When Sofia was 11 years old, her nursery walls were covered with the pages of Ostrogradski's lecture notes on differential and integral analysis. She recognized parts of the papers that her uncle had mentioned. The papers were her introduction into calculus.
Under the family's tutor, Y I Malevich, Sofia undertook her first proper mathematical studies. She began to enjoy mathematics so much that she neglected her other studies. Her father then put a stop to her mathematics lessons, but she borrowed a copy of Bourdeu's Algebra and read it at night as her family slept. She was later forced to marry so that she could study abroad, but her father would not allow her to heave home. At this time, Russian women couldn't live away from home without the consent from their father and husband. At the age of 18, she entered a normal marriage to a young paleontologist ...

In 1878, Kovalevskaya gave birth to a daughter and in the spring of 1883, Vladimir, from whom she had been separated for two years, committed suicide. She then immersed herself in mathematics to rid herself of the guilt that she felt. She became the third person to hold a chair at a European university in June 1889. She taught analysis courses and became an editor of Acta Mathematica, a mathematical journal. Kovalevskaya won a prize from the Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1889 and was elected a corresponding member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. Great Russian Women
Olga, Russian princess
Ruler Of Russia from 954 to 969
"Behind every great man stands a woman," goes the saying. In a real sense that was true of the Russian prince Vladimir. Credited with Christianizing Russia, Vladimir was following in the steps of his grandmother, Princess Olga of Kiev, who attempted the task earlier and can be given partial credit for preventing Russia from turning Islamic. Olga became regent for her son Svyatoslav in 954 upon the assassination of her husband, Igor I, Prince of Kiev. His costly wars had brought Russia to ruin. She immediately executed his murderers and ruled for the next twenty years, implementing fiscal and other reforms throughout the principality. Possibly already a convert to Christianity, she visited Constantinople and in 957 was baptized there. She returned to Russia with a Christ-like hunger for souls and attempted to lead her people to Orthodoxy. At the same time, she sent envoys to Rome, requesting teachers be sent to train her people in the faith. Led by her son, Svyatoslav, the pagan nobles resisted Christ and her efforts failed. Svyatoslav himself almost converted to Islam. Byzantium diplomacy averted that danger. No doubt Olga's influence had a hand. Certainly she had created a political faction which was interested in seeing Russia Christianized. Olga died in 969. Her pagan son gave her a Christian burial. She is recognized as a saint in both the Catholic and Orthodox branches of the church. Her feast day is July 11th.

Sonya Kovalevskaya
Background
Sonya was born in Russia in 1850, the daughter of an army general. She had an unhappy childhood, as she felt neglected by her parents. However, according to Wilson (1995) Sonya began studying mathematics at a very young age and credits her curiosity to her uncle Peter. When she was 14 she taught herself trigonometry, and then after secondary schooling she was determined to continue her education at University, so a marriage of convenience was arranged. This allowed her to move to Berlin to study at the University under Weierstrass. She studied under him for 4 years. Then in 1874 she gained a doctorate in mathematics from the Gottingen University for her work on partial differential equations, integrals and the form of Saturn's rings. She later became Professor of mathematics at Stockholm and was to become the leading mathematician of her time. She was considered to be a mathematical genius and the greatest woman mathematician prior to the 20th century (ed. Gillispie 1970).
Contributions
Kovalevskaya made two important contributions to mathematics. First was her proof of what is now referred to as the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem. This theorem deals with a rather general system of differential equations of the first order with any number of variables, that is n independent variables. Kovalevskaya's colleagues considered that her statement and proof of the Theorem was an important improvement over Cauchy's (Koblitz 1987).
