Treebeard's Homepage Stumpers Treebeard's Stumper Answer 30 April 1999 Getting Around Getting around to all the kids' exhibits at the DMS Science Fair on Friday night will be hard enough. (That's 5 - 8 p.m., with BBQ and softball!) This stumper is also hard to get around. The picture below shows a rectangle with five pairs of spots. The task is to draw lines connecting the spots with the same letters, A to A B to B , and so on. Your lines may not cross each other, or leave the rectangle, or cross the solid barriers between AD and BC . If you can't get it, try leaving it alone for a day and then try again. It is possible to connect the spots in the stumper without crossing lines. (See below.) These graph theory problems are very real for the design of electronic circuit boards, since signals will short-circuit if any paths cross. Christian got it first. He tried at night, and then saw it right away the next morning. I don't know why that helps, but I had the same experience. Several kids assumed they could only use straight lines, which shows how assumptions can get in the way. Often some kind of lateral thinking is required to see a solution!

The paper was published by the Vienna Academy of Sciences in 1870. left Greifswald to take up the appointment of a chair of mathematics at Heidelberg. had been greatly influenced by Weierstrass 's lectures on elliptic functions 's supervision and submitted his thesis Zur Theorie der Modulargleichungen der elliptischen Functionen to Heidelberg in 1870. He was awarded his doctorate in June 1870, and his thesis was published in the following year. Weierstrass and Kronecker The first issue appeared in 1876 and a part was produced each month. Sadly only 3 volumes and 30 issues appeared before it was forced to close. The editors wrote in the final issue:- With this issue the Technical University Journal has come to the end of its career. It seems that here in Hungary no mathematical journal can exit without financial support. Of course, if there were only half as many readers of mathematics as there are teachers, things would be quite different.

Kürschák József Matematikai Tanulóverseny: a Mathematikai és Phisikai Társulat 1894-ben határozta el, hogy mennyiségtan–természettan tanulóversenyeket rendez. Ezzel kívánt maradandó emléket állítani annak, hogy a társulat elnökét, Eötvös Lorándot vallás- és közokt.-ügyi min.-ré nevezték ki. ( Eötvös Loránd Fizikai Társulat ) A társulat minden évben õsszel, az az évben érettségi vizsgát tett tanulóknak rendezte meg a versenyt, elõször Bp.-en és Kolozsvárott, majd az elsõ vh. okozta háromévi szünet után Bp.-en és Szegeden. A versenyen négy óra állt rendelkezésre a kitûzött három, el. matematikai témájú feladat megoldására. A versenyzõk minden segédeszközt, könyvet szabadon használhattak. Ezek az elõírások mind a mai napig érvényben vannak. 1916-ban különvált a matematika- és a fizikaverseny. ( fizikai tanulmányi versenyek) 1943–47-ig szüneteltek a versenyek, azóta újra, minden évben megrendezi a Bolyai János Matematikai Társulat immár az ország 19 városában. 1949 óta a verseny Kürschák József nevét viseli. (A hasonló fizikai verseny az Eötvös nevet vette fel.) 1947 óta a középisk.-sok is részt vehetnek a versenyen ( tanulmányi versenyek ) . – A verseny feladatanyaga m.-ul négy kiadásban jelent meg. 1963-ban Hungarian Problem Book c. angolul is kiadták, az egész világon ismertté vált, lefordították orosz, japán, román nyelvre is. – A pályadíjjal kitüntetett versenyzõk közül néhány név: Zemplén Gyõzõ (1896), Fejér Lipót (1897), Kármán Tódor (1898), König Dénes (1902), Szegõ Gábor (1912), Teller Ede (1925).
