Kolgmogorov complexity is a deep and sophisticated theory that provides the means to measure the intrinsic information in objects via their algorithmic description length. It applies to a wide range of areas including theory of computation, combinatorics, inductive reasoning and machine learning. In this seminar we will cover the basics and some applications of Kolmogorov complexity. The main text for this seminar will be An introduction to Kolmogorov complexity and its applications by Li and Vitanyi.
Requirements:
each student is required to give an individual presentation, submit a short article summarizing his/her presentation, read all the seminar articles and background material, and is expected to attend all the classes and contribute to the discussions. All these components will contribute to the seminar?s final mark. Specifically, to get a full mark, students have to successfully complete the following tasks:
  • Reading: All students are required to read all relevant lecture material before attending the lectures. At least a week before each presentation the presenting student is responsible to distribute all relevant material to his/her talk.

Kolmogorov Complexity
Since my friend Adam Tuckerman referred to Kolmogorov Complexity as "Crackerjack Complexity," and asked, "Don't Kolmogorovs live in caves and eat wayward travelers?" I decided to create this page as an attempt to explain for family and friends. Put simply, the Kolmogorov Complexity of an object is the length of the shortest computer program that runs on a computer and outputs that object. So if you can code up a very short program to output a very long number, then that number would not be considered complex. For example, the number 1 followed by 256 zeros would not be very complex because a simple loop could output all of those zeros. It has the name "Kolmogorov" because Andrey Komogorov , a celebrated Russian Mathematician, Computer Scientist and more of the 20th century laid down the theory's foundation. There were other extremely important contributors, but his name grabbed the title. I'll elaborate for any interested people. By "object" we denote something that can be described by the ones and zeros inside the computer. We must fix a reference computer and computer language because program length will vary depending on the language. Fortunately a fundamental result of theoretical computing is that this variance cannot be more than a some constant amount, dependent on the two languages under question, but independent of the program. The quickest way of believing this is to notice that in one language we can write an interpreter for the second language, which has some constant length. This interpreter will be able to run any program of the second language.

Topological distinguishability
To define T spaces, we first define the concept of topological distinguishablity . If X is a topological space and x and y are points in X , then x and y are topologically indistinguishable if and only if any of the following equivalent conditions hold:
  • they have exactly the same neighbourhoods ; i.e. for all open sets U , we have x U iff y U x belongs to the closure of y and y belongs to the closure of x x and y have exactly the same closures.

Complexity
Complexity research tries to apply absolute numbers to the question regarding how complex a data sequence is, which in turn has something to say about how well the sequence will compress. Traditional data compression research dodges the question of absolute complexity, instead always referring to the entropy of a data stream "with respect to a given model." Complexity studies the entropy of a sequence with respect to God's model. Search compression newsgroups for references to this topic Please be sure to visit Friends of DataCompression.info! Andrei Nikolaevich Kolmogorov's parents were not married and his father took no part in his upbringing. His father Nikolai Kataev, the son of a priest, was an agriculturist who was exiled. He returned after the Revolution to head a Department in the Agricultural Ministry but died in fighting in 1919. Kolmogorov's mother also, tragically, took no part in his upbringing since she died in childbirth at Kolmogorov's birth. His mother's sister, Vera Yakovlena, brought Kolmogorov up and he always had the deepest affection for her. In fact it was chance that had Kolmogorov born in Tambov since the family had no connections with that place. Kolmogorov's mother had been on a journey from the Crimea back to her home in Tunoshna near Yaroslavl and it was in the home of his maternal grandfather in Tunoshna that Kolmogorov spent his youth. Kolmogorov's name came from his grandfather, Yakov Stepanovich Kolmogorov, and not from his own father. Yakov Stepanovich was from the nobility, a difficult status to have in Russia at this time, and there is certainly stories told that an illegal printing press was operated from his house. After Kolmogorov left school he worked for a while as a conductor on the railway. In his spare time he wrote a treatise on Newton's laws of mechanics. Then, in 1920, Kolmogorov entered Moscow State University but at this stage he was far from committed to mathematics. He studied a number of subjects, for example in addition to mathematics he studied metallurgy and Russian history. Nor should it be thought that Russian history was merely a topic to fill out his course, indeed he wrote a serious scientific thesis on the owning of property in Novgorod in the 15th and 16th centuries. There is an anecdote told by D G Kendall in [10] regarding this thesis, his teacher saying:-

Russian mathematician whose work influenced several branches of modern mathematics. Notably, he presented some basic postulates for probability theory that have since served to make the subject an integral part of analysis. At the age of 17 Kolmogorov was enrolled in the Moscow State University. In the autumn of 1921 he worked on complex problemsin the theory of trigonometrical series and operations on setsclosely tied with the basic directions of the Moscow mathematical school of that time, namely, with ideas in the theory of functions of real variables. In the spring of 1922 he completed a study in the theory of operations on sets (published in 1928). In the study of probability theory, which is considered his basic speciality, Kolmogorov formulated two systems of partial differential equations that bear his name; they describe transition probabilities controlling a Markov process. The Kolmogorov equations provide a means of dealing with problems in the theories of Brownian motion and diffusion. The work marked a new period in the development of probability theory and its application in physics, chemistry, civil engineering, and biology.

    58. What Is Algorithmic Complexity?
andrey kolmogorov, Ray Solomonoff and Gregory Chaitin made important contributionsin the late 60s with algorithmic information theory.
    http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-algorithmic-complexity.htm
What is Algorithmic Complexity? Algorithmic complexity, (computational complexity, or Kolmogorov complexity), is a foundational idea in both computational complexity theory and algorithmic information theory , and plays an important role in formal induction. The algorithmic complexity of a binary string is defined as the shortest and most efficient program that can produce the string. Though there are an infinite number of programs that can produce any given string, one program or group of programs will always be the shortest. There is no algorithmic way of finding the shortest algorithm that outputs a given string; this is one of the first results of computational complexity theory. Even so, we can make an educated guess. This result, (the computational complexity of a string), turns out to be very important for proofs related to computability. Since any physical object or property can in principle be described to near-exhaustion by a string of bits, objects and properties can be said to have algorithmic complexity as well. In fact, reducing the complexity of real-world objects to programs that produce the objects as output, is one way of viewing the enterprise of science. The complex objects around us tend to come from three main generating processes; emergence evolution , and intelligence , with the objects produced by each tending towards greater algorithmic complexity.

Mathematicians and light bulbs ISSN 0110-0025 CENTREFOLD BOB LONG Robert Stephen Long is a very good candidate for a long-service medal for his contributions to mathematics in this country, and his career illustrates with great clarity the development of the subject in the past half-century. With the retirement of Sadler, and the arrival of Derek Lawden as HoD, the atmosphere if not the resources for research improved a great deal, and through the 1960s Bob wrote and published a series of papers, largely on one of the topics that Lawden had pioneered, that of orbital transfer. He was promoted to a readership in 1968. Throughout his time in the department, Bob took more than his share of administrative work, and of the teaching of first-year and engineering mathematics courses, and is rightly remembered for his patience and thoroughness. On his retirement at the end of the 1980s, Bob became involved in (perhaps "was inveigled into" suits the case better) the NZ International Mathematical Olympiad movement, and set up the weekly coaching sessions which are open to candidate olympians in Christchurch. He is still in charge, and the number of this country's best young mathematicians who have passed through his hands, and who owe a real debt to him for patient instruction, encouragement and inspiration, grows by the year.
