Notes on the story of James Clark
They span and wove at both Deanston and Catrine, but the cloth was all finished (as it still is) at Catrine. He had read more than most busy men find time or taste for. His specialty was mercantile science, on which he was justly reckoned an authority. He was a leading member of the Chamber of Commerce; and in 1853 the Royal Commission on the Law of Partnership called on him for his views, which, as may be supposed, were against Limited Liability. This fine property, with its picturesque old house and beautiful grounds, he bought in 1851, before which he had lived in West Regent Street. Crossbasket has belonged to several well-known "Glasgow Men." In the beginning of last century it belonged to Dean of Guild Thomas Peter, founder of Peter's mortification "for the sustentation of ane honest, decayed and poor man of the merchant's rank, being a burgess, guild-brother, and inhabitant of the burgh." Charles Mackintosh, Alexander Downie, and John Cabbell were James Clark's immediate predecessors. The "Glasgow Regiment" which James Finlay blew up was a different corps altogether, and has long vanished from the army list. It was known as the "Royal Glasgow Volunteers," its regimental number was the 83rd, and it was disbanded in 1783. A "John Finley," who appears among its subalterns, may have been the piper's elder son, afterwards Major, R, E. This 83rd had no connection with the later 83rd or "Dublin Regiment," now the "Royal Irish Rifles."

Long thought of as one of Britain's best indie filmmakers, but relatively unknown to most filmgoers, Ken Loach professed his ambivalence to awards, but his delight in celebrating British cinema at its ground roots. Gary Oldman's gritty film " Nil by Mouth " picked up three awards, including acting awards for Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke (also the winner at Cannes), as well as for Laila Morse as Best Newcomer.

"Jones' Fight" by Thomas Kirkman (1845) Col. Dick Jones was decidedly the great man of the village of Summerville. He was colonel of the regiment-he had represented his district in congress-he had been spoken of as candidate for governor-he was at the head of the bar in Hawkins county, Kentucky, and figured otherwise largely in public life. His legal opinion and advice were highly valued by the senior part of the population-his dress and taste were law to the juniors-his easy, affable, and attentive manner charmed all the matrons-his dignified politeness captivated the young ladies-and his suavity and condescension delighted the little boarding-school misses. He possessed a universal smattering of information-his manners were the most popular; extremely friendly and obliging, lively and witty; and, in short, he was a very agreeable companion. Yet truth requires it to be admitted, that Col. Dick Jones was professionally more specious than deep, and that his political advancement was owing to personal partiality more than superior merit-that his taste and dress were of questionable propriety: for instance, he occasionally wore a hunting-shirt white fringed, or a red waistcoat, or a fawn-skin one, or a calico morning gown of a small yellow pattern, and he indulged in other similar vagaries in clothing. And in manners and deportment, there was an air of harmless (true Virginian bred and Kentucky raised) self-conceit and swagger, which, though not to be admired, yet it gave piquancy and individuality to his character.

Call Family and Brevard Family Papers, 1788-1920s.
Record Group Number Series/Collection Number: Quantity: 6 cubic feet Arrangement: Organized into two series: Call Family Papers and Brevard Family Papers; within each series, primary arrangement is chronological. Oversized and flat materials are filed separately at the end of the collection. Collection Description: This collection contains correspondence, writings, and other papers of Richard Keith Call and his family, 1788-1916, and Theodore Washington Brevard and Mary Call Brevard and their family, 1820-ca. 1920s. Included are personal and business correspondence; financial records; land records; commissions; speeches; manuscript poems, articles, books, and other writings; newspaper clippings; and scrapbooks documenting the personal and public lives of members of the Call and Brevard families. Together, the Call and Brevard Family Papers offer highly significant and unique documentation of Florida's territorial, early statehood, and Civil War history, the development of early Tallahassee, issues and attitudes concerning slavery and race, and the effects of the Civil War on the lives of planters of the Old South. Particularly significant among the Call papers is correspondence between Richard Keith Call and Andrew Jackson, for whom Call had served as an aide de camp and with whom he maintained a lifelong friendship. Also notable are Call's writings regarding slavery and race, secession, the Union, and the Civil War. Call's civil, diplomatic, and military commissions are in the collection, including those appointing him territorial governor of Florida. The collection also documents Call's land speculation activities in early Florida and his involvement in attempts to settle the estate of Thomas Kirkman, father of his wife Mary Letitia Kirkman Call. Call's correspondents included Andrew Jackson and Prince Achille Murat, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte and an early Tallahassee settler.

SMOOTH KIRKMAN TRIPLE SYSTEMS. The following problem, known as Kirkman's schoolgirl problem, was introduced in 1850 by Reverend Thomas J. Kirkman (1806-1895) as "Query 6" on page 48 of the Ladies and Gentleman's Diary [2] (see [3] for his statement of the general problem): Fifteen young ladies in a school walk out three abreast for seven days in succession; it is required to arrange them daily, so that no two walk twice abreast. The general setting of the problem is the following: one wants to find 3n + 1 arrangements of 6n + 3 girls in rows of three such that any two girls belong to the same row in exactly one arrangement.

Karen Parshall The ICHM co-sponsored (with the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America) a day of lectures on Friday, 9 January, 2004 at the Joint Meetings held this year in Phoenix, Arizona. The session- co-organized by Joseph W. Dauben, Lehman College (CUNY), Karen V. H. Parshall, University of Virginia, and David E. Zitarelli, Temple University-drew an audience that varied during the day between 50 and 200. Title: Analytic Geometry: Descartes versus Fermat Title: The Brachistochrone Problem and Its Sequels Abstract: To a large extent Hilbert's well-known list of problems (Paris, 1900) steered the course of mathematics in the 20th century. However, posing problems is an old mathematical tradition and there are many famous problems from the 17th century, among them the most influential Brachistochrone Problem (Johann Bernoulli, 1696). As a consequence of this problem mathematical physics (in its actual meaning) got its start by developing essential variational methods that resulted in a new branch of mathematics. Moreover, the concept of an analytic function was formulated (Joh. Bernoulli, 1697) and extended (Euler, since 1727). This lecture gives a comprehensive overview on these cornerstones of mathematics.
