Harpsichord Builder When Thomas Goff started to make harpsichords in the early 1950s, awareness and knowledge of the traditional methods of designing and making keyboard instruments had scarcely begun, and Goff started working almost by himself. He had left a legal career at the Bar to learn harpsichord making from Herbert Lambert, who had added amateur harpsichord making to his profession of photography. Goff followed Lambert's ideas fairly closely, basing his instruments loosely on Kirckman's later work. He brought to it such modern knowledge and techniques as he felt to be appropriate, but did not do much research himself or make many experiments. Thomas Goff was distantly related to the Royal Family and was obviously fairly well-off. He lived in a huge red-brick terrace house at 46 Pont Street, near fashionable Sloane Square in London, with his butler who resided in the basement. The high Edwardian rooms on the ground floor of the house were full of his harpsichords, which he rarely sold, though he hired them out for concerts. Above that, the middle floors were often let - Lord Waldegrave and his family lived there at one time. And then, right at the top, in two floors of attics, for the Pont Street houses are somewhat Dutch in design, he had his workshop scattered over several rooms. One room for himself, one for his cabinet maker, Cobby, one for passing helpers or students, one for polishing, one for storage.

Problem Description
Here's is a problem commonly known as Kirkman's Schoolgirl problem: Fifteen young ladies of a school walk out three abreast for seven days in succession: it is required to arrange them daily so that no two shall walk abreast more than once.
This puzzle was proposed by English amateur mathematician Thomas Penyngton Kirkman in 1850 in a popular magazine called "The Lady's and Gentleman's Diary". There are 7 unique solutions and Kirkman found them all. (Apparently none of the lady or gentleman subscribers came up with a solution.) By unique solutions, we mean solutions that cannot be transformed into one of the other six by renaming the girls or by rearranging the rows or days. By the way, the technical word for solutions which can be so transformed is "isomorphic". This is the toughest program I've tackled in a long time. It has taken a couple of months of "spare" programming time to produce the current version,. It solves the first part of the problem (find a solution) finding about 60 solutions per hour on my 2ghz Pentium 4 - with no attempt yet to solve the implied 2nd part (find the 7 unique solutions). I ran it for 7 1/2 hours and found 522 of the trillions of non-unique solutions that exist. I suspect I've really only found one of the unique seven but I'll know for sure once I've solved the other half of the problem.

No surprise that President Bushscion of the Prescott Bush clan of Kennebunkport and Connecticutwould sound the imperial charge on St. Patrick's Day. "The world's more full of weeping for it," as the Irish bard once said. But we'll raise a pint notwithstanding for our two congressmen. Democrat David Price, representing the 15-501 side of the Triangle (and, in presidential candidate Howard Dean's wonderful phrase, "the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party"), watched the president's address Monday with constituents in Apex. Price repeated his opposition to Bush's unilateral actions. And Democrat Brad Miller, not previously heard from in opposition to Bush, has just broken decisively with the president. "I have often found (Bush's) arguments for immediate military action against Iraq unconvincing," Miller said in a letter to some of his constituents, "at times even contrived." March 19, 2003

Miller said that while a democratic Iraq might emerge from the war, it's more likely that Iraq will disintegrate, as Yugoslavia did after Tito fell, unleashing ethnic strife and fanning anti-American hatred throughout the region. Now, if we're talking political guts, it's one thing for Price to oppose the war and quite another for Miller to do it. Price is an eight-term incumbent ensconced in a safely liberal district. Miller is in his first term and represents a Raleigh-based district that's got a lot more John Edwardses in it, if you will, than Howard Deans.

Did anyone see that Meeker rout coming? Well, yes, just about everybody did, thanks to good Democrat Dean Debnam, who took his own poll a week before the election and shared the results with a select group of many. Debnam had Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker beating John Odom 55 percent to 29 percent, which exaggerated the outcome only slightly: Meeker ended up winning 59 percent to 41 percent. Debnam hit the District D race on the nose: Councilor Benson Kirkman forced into a runoff by Thomas Crowder, both with one-third of the vote in a four-way contest. October 15, 2003

He's a Raleigh businessman with strongly held progressive views, so strongly thatafter losing his temper with a few fence-sitters back in '99 when Stephanie Fanjul, his wife, was running for mayorhe's now letting his mastery of things technological speak for him in campaign season. Since one of his businesses, Workplace Options Inc., includes a large call center (it finds child care, elder care and other helpful services for the employees of client companies), Debnam can offer progressive candidates an inexpensive way to do polling, targeting, mailing lists and telephone canvasses. "It's a business, too," he says, "but the main thing is, we can buy down the cost of running campaigns by aggressively applying technology in volume." Debnam's specialty: "Helping people who haven't run beforehelping them figure out how to do it." (His clients this year included Crowder, as well as school board members Susan Parry and Beverly Clark).

Kirkman is a small community that lies in the center of Shelby Co. and is approximately 45 miles NE of Council Bluffs. We are 14 miles north of Interstate 80 on U.S. Highway 59 and 4 miles east of F-32. We are situated on the banks of a branch of the West Nishnabotna River.
