Thomas Kirkman published over 60 substantial mathematical papers and many more minor ones. He solved the problem of 'Steiner triples' in 1846 in On a Problem in Combinatorics , 6 years before Steiner proposed it. He also constructed finite projective planes. Thomas attended the grammar school in Bolton where he was taught Greek and Latin but no mathematics. He did well at school but although his schoolmaster and the vicar saw that he was a potential Cambridge fellow, Thomas's father could not be persuaded and Thomas was forced to leave school at the age of 14. He worked in his father's office, continuing his study of Greek and Latin in his own time and extending his knowledge of languages by also learning French and German. After 9 years working in the office, Thomas went against his father's wishes and he entered Trinity College Dublin to study mathematics, philosophy, classics and science for his B.A. On returning to England in 1835 he entered the Church of England. He spent five years as a curate, first in Bury, then in Lymm. By 1839 he became vicar in the Parish of Southworth in Lancashire, a position he held for 52 years.

Hi, My name is Kevin Lockhart and I live in Nottingham, England. I am trying to find out as much as possible about my Kirkman line as I can. Up to now I have been fairly successful in tracing them here in Nottingham. However, two brothers, Thomas and Isaac Kirkman (and possibly a third, Robert) emigrated to the States somewhere between 1844 and 1850. Initially they settled in Philadelphia, Pa. but didn't stay too long as they are recorded as living together in Springfield twsp, Summit County, Ohio in the 1850 census. Thomas and Isaac were both born in the village of Cropwell Bishop, Nottinghamshire, England. Isaac in 1817 and Thomas in 1819. They are my gr-gr-gr-granduncles according to Familytree Maker. Isaac Snr. moved to Michigan and I believe he died there in 1897. Several of his children moved back to Ohio, including Fulton County.

    36. History Of Georgiana Marian Kirkman, Piano And Harpsichord Maker
A potted history of Georgiana Marian kirkman the last custodian of the A watercolour “East Side Soho Square looking South” by thomas Hosmer Shepherd.
    http://www.uk-piano.org/history/kirkman/
    A potted history of
    Georgiana Marian Kirkman
the last custodian of the famous
    Kirkman piano business.
Georgiana Marian Kirkman was the daughter of Joseph Kirkman (1790-1877) and his wife Louisa. They had six children: Frederick Augustus
    Joseph
    Alexander Henry
    Louisa
    Henry John and
    Georgiana Marian
    Georgiana Marian Kirkman 1828-1898
Georgiana Kirkman, who died 1898, was the last person to be custodian of the famous Kirkman piano makers business. From a book entitled 'A short history of a great house' by Edward Lamburn (London 1938) page 24 gives a brief summary of the transfer of the Kirkman business to John Clementi Collard, rival piano makers (later to become Collard and Collard). The Kirkman male line having ceased Georgiana was having difficulty maintaining the size and standard of the house she approached John Clementi Collard. She explained her position and indicated that the business was available for disposal. Ha asked her the terms. She answered "That you take the business as it stands, at certified cost." He asked about the name and goodwill, she replied "An undertaking that you will not dispose of it, and thatyou will continue to regard it on the same traditions as your own." He agreed, "Yes, I am willing to do that; but the price?" "That is the price." She replied. So over a hundred years of good will changed hands under such unique conditions. Readers must consider the accuracy of these statements. As yet there is no verification to either the value of the estate or the quoted conversation between "JCC" and Georgiana. However, it is recorded elsewhere that Georgiana did indeed dispose of the business to Collard at almost no cost.

All our preparation, consideration and decisions regarding our gear come to the test at the moment we begin our first cast. The gear has to perform at the level we demand . . . as we expect it to . . . as we know it will. That's what this section is all about. Performance and expectation!
The products . . . rods, reels, lines and the rest of the angler's arsenal . . . featured in these articles are evaluated by our staff of anglers. These anglers come from every level of the sport . . . novice to expert. Each has a different perspective, and experience level from which they view and evaluate "quality and performance" in the products reviewed. This is good . . . it provides you with definite information from the eyes of real anglers fishing their streams, increasing their knowledge and taking this opportunity to share it with you.
