In 1860 Robert Bunsen (1811–1899) and Gustav Kirchhoff (1824–1887) discovered two alkali metals, cesium and rubidium, with the aid of the spectroscope they had invented the year before. These discoveries inaugurated a new era in the means used to find new elements. The first fifty elements discovered—beyond those known since ancient times—were either the products of chemical reactions or were released by electrolysis. From 1860 the search was on for trace elements detectable only with the help of specialized instruments like the spectroscope. Bunsen, the son of a professor of modern languages at Göttingen University, earned his doctorate from that university in 1830. He was then given a three-year travel grant that took him to factories, places of geologic interest, and famous laboratories, including Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac's in Paris. Early in his career he did research in organic chemistry, which cost him the use of his right eye, when an arsenic compound, cacodyl cyanide, exploded. Throughout his career he remained deeply interested in geological topics and once made daring temperature measurements of the water in the geyser tube of Iceland's Great Geyser just before it erupted. Bunsen's most important work was in developing several techniques used in separating, identifying, and measuring various chemical substances. He also made a number of improvements in chemical batteries for use in isolating quantities of pure metals—including one known as the Bunsen battery. He created the Bunsen burner for use in flame tests of various metals and salts: Its nonluminous flame did not interfere with the colored flame given off by the test material.

Gustav Robert Kirchhoff (1824-1887) German physicist born in Koenigsberg, in 1824 and died in Berlin, in 1887. His more notable scientific works were in the domain of thermal radiation and of spectral analysis, being responsible for the discovery, in 1861, together with Bunsen , of the rubidium and cerium ; this work enabled the first explanation of the absorption stripes usually called Fraunhofer stripes. Also accomplished studies on the theory of electrical circuits. Was professor of Physics at the University of Heidelberg. In 1874 it went to the University of Berlin and became member of the Science Academy.

Gustav Robert Kirchhoff
V letech 1860-61 pomocí spektrální analýzy objevili dva nové chemické prvky (cesium a rubidium) Kirchhoff, Gustav Robert Kirchhoff dále definoval pojem èerného tìlesa a ukázal principiální význam úlohy urèit jeho spektrum.

Gustav Robert Kirchhoff
Gustav Kirchhoff was a nineteenth century physicist who is well known for his contributions to circuit theory and the understanding of thermal emission, but who also made significant discoveries in optics. His work in the area spectroscopy, much of which was carried out in conjunction with chemist Robert Bunsen, was foundational to the field, as was his study of black body radiation. Kirchhoff’s findings are commonly considered to have been instrumental to Max Planck’s quantum theory of electromagnetic radiation formulated at the beginning of the twentieth century. Most of Kirchhoff’s early research was related to electrical currents. While still only a graduate student, he published a paper that included a pair of rules for the analysis of circuits, which are widely utilized in the field of electrical engineering and are now known as Kirchhoff’s laws of circuits . Then, by 1850, Kirchhoff determined that Georg Ohm’s suggestion that electrical flow is analogous to the flow of heat was incorrect and misleading, lending itself to the mistaken assumption that a static current could be present in a conductor. Kirchhoff made another important contribution in this area around 1857, when he noted that an electrical current traveled at approximately the same speed as light. However, he did not make the connection, which was deduced by James Clerk Maxwell in 1862, that light was an electromagnetic phenomenon.
