    by David Plant
"The heavenly motions... are nothing but a continuous song for several voices,
perceived not by the ear but by the intellect, a figured music
which sets landmarks in the immeasurable flow of time."
John Banville: Kepler , (Minerva 1990)
    Kepler's Background
Johannes Kepler His schooldays, though academically successful, were thoroughly miserable. His know-all cleverness irritated his classmates, who frequently beat him up. He considered himself physically repulsive (admitting to 'a dog-like horror of baths'), thoroughly unlikeable, an outsider. He turned to the world of ideas for escape and found solace in an abiding religious conviction.
The Cosmic Mystery O Ancient Greek geometers knew that the number of solids that can be constructed from regular geometric figures is limited to five. They are known variously as the 'perfect', 'Pythagorean' or 'Platonic' solids. Kepler speculated that one of the five solids could be inserted between each concentric planetary sphere. This seemed to explain why there were just six planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) with five intervals separating them, and why the intervals were so irregular. Convinced that he had discovered a subtle geometric relationship between the diameters of the planetary orbits and their distances from the Sun, Kepler wrote

    ORIGINS OF MODERNITY
    Kepler, Johannes (1571-1630)
Astronomia nova … seu, Physica coelestis, tradita commentariis De motibus stellae martis, ex observationibus G.V. Tychonis Brahe.
    Pragae : 1609.
This is Kepler's most important work in astronomy. Focussing on the orbit of Mars, Kepler in this work abandoned the circle which had dominated accounts of planetary motions from the time of Aristotle and Ptolemy. Through the use of Tycho Brahé's superior planetary tables, Kepler realised that the orbit of Mars fitted the shape of an ellipse. He went on in this work to formulate two of his three laws of planetary motions, including the law that all planets move in elliptical orbits. The Astronomia nova is also unique in that it is prefaced with a short intellectual autobiography.

    Ulmae : Typis J. Saurii, 1627-[1630].
The Rudolphine Tables is a monumental work in which the great astronomer Kepler provided the data by which the positions of the planets could be computed. It was the first book to require the use of logarithms which had recently been invented by John Napier. Kepler's tables were about 30 times better than any previous ones and were the primary source of recognition for his work in astronomy in the decades following their publication. He used the tables to predict a transit of Mercury which was observed by Pierre Gassendi in 1631. This successful observation added weight to the case for Copernicanism. See Gassendi's Institutio astronomica , also in this exhibition.

Oberon System V4 (johannes kepler University Linz) A complete IDE including compiler, debugger, class browser, development libraries, network programming (TCP/IP, WWW, a complete web browser), and database connectivity.
    http://olymp.idle.at/tanis/oberon.linux.html
For general Information about Oberon have a look at Guy Ladens fantastic Oberon Reference Site or browse through the Oberon Web Ring (see below) Oberon for Linux should properly be called Oberon for GNU/Linux systems, since every Linux system uses a huge amount of GNU software. To give credit to the people at GNU I'll use the term GNU/Linux throughout. Have a look at http://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html to see what it's all about.
Oberon for GNU/Linux will of course run on every Linux Distribution (Red Hat, Debian, SuSE, etc.). Release 1.7 (Codename 'Rise of the dead') lets Oberon run on newer Linux Systems (tested on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, known to run also on Debian Sarge). It adds a new wrapper-library which amends problems with new libpthread.so Versions. It is dedicated to the brave people in Erfurt, who use Oberon for teaching ;-)
1.7.02 fixes wrong Source Code for Kernel.Mod and also fixes a crash when loading TCP.Mod
This release is a maintainance release without any new features. I'll gladly accept any kind of bug report, though due to time constraints I cannot guarantee that I will fix them.

Kepler, Johannes , 1571-1630. Brahe, Tycho, 1546-1601. Ulmae, Typis J. Saurii, 1627. Kepler (1571-1630) used the precise observations of Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) to produce the Rudolphine Tables, the first application of Copernican theory that improved on the accuracy of Ptolemy's model. The tables are named for Emperor Rudolph of the Holy Roman Empire, whom Kepler served as Imperial Mathematician. The frontispiece shows several famous astronomers, including Copernicus and Tycho Brahe. Hanging on the columns are astronomical instruments and around the base of the structure the process of printing is illustrated. The Dudley Observatory Last Top Next

The Fourth International Workshop on Automated Deduction in Geometry Johannes Kepler Universität Linz, Austria RISC-Linz, Schloss Hagenberg September 04-06, 2002

The International Workshops on Automated Deduction in Geometry ( ADG) have become a forum to exchange ideas and views, to present research results and progress, and to demonstrate software tools. Applications of ADG to CAGD/CAD, computer vision and geometry education presented at the previous three workshops held in Zurich, September 2000, Beijing, August 1998 and Toulouse, September 1996 shed new light on the perspectives of ADG. The fourth workshop ADG 2002 to be held in Hagenberg (near Linz), Austria, September 4-6, 2002 will continue ADG's emphasis on theory and algorithms, implementation, experiments, and applications to science, engineering and industry.
