Kepler, Johannes Austrian Astronomer. Kepler proposed the fundamental simplification of the Copernican scheme by hypothesising one ellipse for the orbit of each planet. This achieved a very good fit, and finally put to rest the Platonic scheme of explaining the motions of the heavens in terms of compounds of uniform circular motion. Kepler is famous for three laws, firstly, elliptical orbits for planets, secondly the law that a line from the sun to a planet sweeps out equal areas in equal times, and finally that the square of the time a planet takes to complete one orbit is proportional to the cube of its mean distance from the sun. Kepler was the first whole hearted and public advocate of the Copernican system . He is also famous for trying to reproduce the ratios of the orbits of the planets from fitting together the five perfect solids, and the theory that the sun holds the planets in their orbits by magnetism. These laws are now known as Kepler's laws. In 1612 Kepler became mathematician to the states of Oberösterreich (Upper Austria). While living in Linz, he published his Harmonice Mundi (Harmony of the World, 1619), the final section of which contained another discovery about planetary motion: The ratio of the cube of a planet's distance from the sun and the square of the planet's orbital period is a constant and is the same for all planets. At about the same time he began publishing a book that took three years to appear, the Epitome Astronomiae Copernicanae (Epitome of Copernican Astronomy, 1618-1621), which brought all of Kepler's discoveries together in a single volume. Equally important, it became the first textbook of astronomy to be based on Copernican principles, and for the next three decades it was a major influence in converting many astronomers to Keplerian Copernicanism. The last major work to appear in Kepler's lifetime was the Tabulae Rudolfinae (Rudolfine Tables, 1625). Based on Brahe's data, the new tables of planetary motion reduced the mean errors from 5° to within 10¢ of the actual position of a planet. The English mathematician Sir Isaac Newton relied heavily on Kepler's theories and observations in formulating his theory of gravitational force.

His father was a merchant who went as a mercenary soldier to fight in the Spanish Netherlands when he was two. His mother was the daughter of an inn-keeper and former mayor, with such a bad reputation that she was very nearly burned at the stake as a witch (her aunt had actually been burned as a witch; Kepler was part of her defense team in 1620. His mother went to follow his father, leaving young Johannes to be raised by her parents, although she returned in a year or two, while his father died in the war. Texas Looking to adopt? Pregnant? He was a sickly child (he had smallpox) and badly near-sighted, but his mathematical gifts were obvious from an early age. From Tübingen he moved to Graz, Austria, where he taught mathematics and astronomy and also became involved in astrology. Johannes Kepler: The Laws of Planetary Motion In the interplay between quantitative observation and theoretical construction that characterizes the development of modern science, we have seen that Brahe was the master of the first but was deficient in the second. The next great development in the history of astronomy was the theoretical intuition of Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), a German who went to Prague to become Brahe's assistant. Brahe's Data and Kepler Kepler and Brahe did not get along well. Brahe apparently mistrusted Kepler, fearing that his bright young assistant might eclipse him as the premiere astonomer of his day. He therefore let Kepler see only part of his voluminous data. He set Kepler the task of understanding the orbit of the planet Mars, which was particularly troublesome. It is believed that part of the motivation for giving the Mars problem to Kepler was that it was difficult, and Brahe hoped it would occupy Kepler while Brahe worked on his theory of the Solar System. In a supreme irony, it was precisely the Martian data that allowed Kepler to formulate the correct laws of planetary motion, thus eventually achieving a place in the development of astronomy far surpassing that of Brahe.
