Johannes Kepler

Johannes Kepler (1571-1630)
Johannes Kepler was one of the most important scientist in the field of astronomy. He was the founder of "celestial mechanics", having been the first to explain planetary motion.
In addition to his theories on the structure of the Universe, Kepler made important headway into the field of optics, his publication Stereometrica Doliorum formed the basis of integral calculus, and he also made important advances in geometry. In addition to these major breakthroughs, Kepler also explained how the tides were influenced by the Moon, determined the exact year of Christ's birth, derived Logarithms based on mathematics, with no reference to John Napier's work, and is responsible for finding the three laws of planetary motion. Kepler's first Law: The orbit of a planet about the Sun is an ellipse with the Sun's center of mass at one focus. Kepler's second Law: A line joining a planet and the Sun sweeps out equal areas in equal intervals of time. Kepler's third Law : The squares of the periods of the planets are proportional to the cubes of their semi-major axes.

But before mankind could be ripe for a science which takes in the whole of reality, a second fundamental truth was needed, which only became common property among philosophers with the advent of Kepler and Galileo . Pure logical thinking cannot yield us any knowledge of the empirical world; all knowledge of reality starts form experience and ends in it. Propositions arrived at by purely logical means are completely empty as regards reality. Introduction to Johannes Kepler
Johannes Kepler was a German scientist who lived from 1571 - 1630. Kepler spent many years studying the geometry of planetary orbits in the hope of finding cosmic perfection. Along with Galileo Galilei, Johannes Kepler is the founding father of empirical science.

Kepler (1571-1630) was appointed Imperial Mathematician in 1601, and through his work on Mars (in New Astronomy , 1609) he discovered that planetary orbits were elliptical. He is also noted for his attempts to find the causes of the planetary motions contained in his model. Detail of the frontispiece from the Rudolphine Tables. Kepler interrupted his theological studies in 1594 to take up an appointment as mathematics teacher at the Lutheran school in Graz. He was dismissed from this position in September 1600, as all Lutherans were ordered out of the district. Earlier that year, Kepler had worked with Tycho Brahe Brahe died in 1601, and Kepler succeeded him as imperial

Kepler, Johannes German mathematician and astronomer. He formulated what are now called Kepler's laws of planetary motion: (1) the orbit of each planet is an ellipse with the Sun at one of the foci; (2) the radius vector of each planet sweeps out equal areas in equal times; (3) the squares of the periods of the planets are proportional to the cubes of their mean distances from the Sun.
Kepler became assistant to Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe 1600, and succeeded him 1601 as imperial mathematician to Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II. Kepler observed in 1604 a supernova, the first visible since the one discovered by Brahe 1572. Kepler completed and published the Rudolphine Tables 1627, the first modern astronomical tables, based on Brahe's observations. His analysis of these data led to the discovery of his three laws, the first two of which he published in Astronomia nova 1609 and the third in Harmonices mundi 1619.
Kepler was one of the first advocates of Sun-centred cosmology, as put forward by Copernicus. Kepler's laws are the basis of our understanding of the Solar System, and such scientists as

Johannes Kepler
The German astronomer Johannes Kepler, b. Dec. 27, 1571, d. Nov. 15, 1630, was the first strong supporter of the heliocentric theory of Copernicus and the discoverer of the three laws of planetary motion. He attended seminaries at Adelberg and Maulbronn before studying theology, philosophy, and mathematics at the University of Tubingen. At Tubingen, Kepler's scientific ability attracted the notice of the astronomer Michael Maestlin. Through Maestlin, Kepler became a supporter of the Copernican theory, although his teacher continued to expound officially the old Ptolemaic system. Kepler had planned to enter religious life, but he accepted a chair in mathematics and astronomy at Graz. At the age of 24, Kepler published Mysterium cosmographicum (Cosmographic Mystery, 1596), in which he defended the Copernican theory and described his ideas on the structure of the planetary system. Influenced by the Pythagoreans, Kepler viewed the universe as being governed by geometric relationships that conform to the inscribed and circumscribed circles of the five regular polygons. Although he was not a Copernican himself, Tycho Brahe, the mathematician at the court of Emperor Rudolph II at Prague, was so impressed with Kepler's work that in 1600 he invited Kepler to come to Prague as his assistant. Confronted with the Catholic persecution of the Protestant minority in Graz, Kepler gladly accepted. When Brahe died the following year, Kepler was appointed his successor and thus inherited Brahe's scientific legacy.

This work opened the way to friendly intercourse with Galileo and Tycho Brahe, and in 1600 Kepler became Tycho's assistant in his observatory near Prague. On Tycho's death (1601) Kepler succeeded him as court mathematician to Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. In 1609 he published the results of Tycho's calculations of the orbit of Mars. In this celebrated work were stated the first two of what became known as Kepler's laws . In 1612, becoming mathematician to the states of Upper Austria, he moved to Linz. He wrote an epitome of the astronomy of Copernicus in 1618, and in 1619 De cometis and Harmonice mundi (in which was announced the third of Kepler's laws). In 1626, Kepler moved to Ulm. After his death his manuscript writings, bought by Catherine II of Russia, were placed in the observatory of Pulkovo. See biographies by M. Caspar (tr. 1959, repr. 1962) and A. Armitage (1966); A.
