Kepler, Johannes (1571-1630)
A German astronomer and mathematician, considered one of the founders of modern astronomy. Using positional data carefully amassed by Tycho Brahe, Kepler formulated his famous three laws (see Kepler's laws of planetary motion ), including the crucial realization that planetary orbits are ellipses not circles. Born in Weil der Stadt, southwest Germany, he studied at the university of Tübingen and, as a graduate, was tutored by Michael Maestlin who introduced him to the heliocentric concepts of Copernicus . In 1597 he published The Cosmographic Mystery in which (revealing his medieval mystical bent) he argued that the distances of the planets from the Sun in the Copernican system were determined by the five regular (Platonic) solids, if one supposed that a planet's orbit was circumscribed about one solid and inscribed in another. Except for Mercury, Kepler's construction gave surprisingly accurate results. Because of the mathematical skills showed in this volume, he was invited by Tycho Brahe to Prague to become his assistant and to calculate new orbits for the planets from Tycho’s observations. When Tycho died, in 1601, Kepler was appointed his successor as Imperial Mathematician, the most prestigious job in mathematics in Europe. In Prague, Kepler published

Johannes Kepler was educated in Tuebingen, and he learned the Copernican system from Michael Maestlin, one of the leading astronomers of the day. While he was speculating on the mysteries of the universe in mathematical terms, he obtained a chance to work with Tycho Brahe, then Imperial Mathematician to Rudolph II. Kepler then worked on the problem of the orbit of Mars, based on Tycho's data. He struggled with this problem over five years, and the result is Kepler's (first two) laws of planetary motion (the third law appeared ten years later). Norwood Russell Hanson writes on this discovery as follows: ... he slowly came to suspect that perhaps his predecessors of the previous 2000 years were hasty in thinking the planetary orbits circular. Hindsight makes us underestimate the strength of this ancient maxim; ... But no bolder exercise of imagination was ever required: Kepler dared to 'pull the patters' away from all the astronomical thinking there had ever been. Not even the conceptual upsets of our century of natural science required such a break with the past. ( Patterns of Discovery , p. 74)

Kepler, Johannes
Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 2 items Kepler, Johannes (1571-1630), German astronomer and natural philosopher, noted for formulating and verifying the three laws of planetary motion. These laws are now known as Kepler's laws Kepler was born on December 27, 1571, in Weil der Stadt in W¼rttemberg and studied theology and classics at the University of T¼bingen. There he was influenced by a mathematics professor, Michael Maestlin, an adherent of the heliocentric theory of planetary motion first developed by the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus . Kepler accepted Copernican theory ( see Copernican System ) immediately, believing that the simplicity of Copernican planetary ordering must have been God's plan. In 1594, when Kepler left T¼bingen for Graz, Austria, he worked out a complex geometric hypothesis to account for distances between the planetary orbits—orbits that he mistakenly assumed were circular. (Kepler later deduced that planetary orbits are elliptic; nevertheless, these preliminary calculations agreed with observations to within 5 percent.) Kepler then proposed that the sun emits a force that diminishes inversely with distance and pushes the planets around in their orbits. Kepler published his account in a treatise entitled
