Science Johannes Kepler Johannes Kepler Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) Johannes Kepler was born in Weil der Stadt in Swabia, in southwest Germany. His paternal grandfather, Sebald Kepler, was a respected craftsman who served as mayor of the city; his maternal grandfather, Melchior Guldenmann, was an innkeeper and mayor of the nearby village of Eltingen. His father, Heinrich Kepler, was "an immoral, rough and quarrelsome soldier," according to Kepler, and he described his mother in similar unflattering terms. From 1574 to 1576 Johannes lived with his grandparents; in 1576 his parents moved to nearby Leonberg, where Johannes entered the Latin school. In 1584 he entered the Protestant seminary at Adelberg, and in 1589 he began his university education at the Protestant university of Tübingen. Here he studied theology and read widely. He passed the M.A. examination in 1591 and continued his studies as a graduate student. Kepler's teacher in the mathematical subjects was Michael Maestlin (1550-1635). Maestlin was one of the earliest astronomers to subscribe to Copernicus's heliocentric theory, although in his university lectures he taught only the Ptolemaic system. Only in what we might call graduate seminars did he acquaint his students, among whom was Kepler, with the technical details of the

Johannes Kepler Johannes Kepler December 27 November 15 ), a key figure in the scientific revolution , was a German astronomer mathematician and astrologer . He is best known for his laws of planetary motion , expounded in the two books Astronomia nova and Harmonices Mundi Kepler was a professor of mathematics at the University of Graz , court mathematician to Emperor Rudolf II , and court astrologer to General Wallenstein . Early in his career, Kepler was an assistant to Tycho Brahe . Kepler's career also coincided with that of Galileo Galilei He is sometimes referred to as "the first theoretical astrophysicist ", although Carl Sagan also referred to him as the last scientific astrologer

Johannes Kepler was born on December 27, 1571. Kepler attended school in Adelberg, Tubingen, and Maulbronn, Germany. Upon completion of his formal education, he accepted a position as chair in mathematics and astronomy at Graz, Germany. His first writing (Cosmographic Mystery written in 1596) supported the work of Copernicus. This work supported the idea that the sun, not the earth, was the center of the solar system. Early in his career he studied the planet Mars. Kepler proved that the orbit of Mars is an ellipse with the Sun occupying one of its foci. This observation was the basis of his first law of planetary motion, the one that states that planets travel in elliptical orbits. His second law of planetary motion, published in 1609, describes the concept of planetary velocity. His third law, published in 1619, describes the relationship between the orbital periods of the planets and their distances from the Sun. His work was the foundation for Newton's theory of gravitation. In other writings, Kepler dealt with optics (1604), telescope lenses (1611), the appearance of a nova (1604), and Galileo's astronomical observations (1910). Kepler's last work, known as the Rudolphine Tables, was a widely used compilation of tables of planetary motion. Kepler died on November 15, 1630. References Asimov, I. (1964).

Johannes Kepler believed that the Copernican heliocentric view of the solar system, which held that the earth rotates around the stationary sun, was correct. Kepler formulated an accurate mathematical description of planetary orbits that gave mathematical rigor to the heliocentric model. His contributions dramatically increased scientists’ understanding of planetary motion; Isaac Newton drew upon Kepler’s work in formulating his theory of gravitation. Johannes Kepler supported the heliocentric theory by Nicolas Copernicus , defending it in his first major work, Mysterium Cosmographicum (1596). In 1601 Kepler became the imperial mathematician to Rudolf II (emperor of the Holy Roman Empire), succeeding Tycho Brahe . Using Brahe's data, between 1609 and 1619 Kepler developed his three laws of planetary motion in Astronomia Nova and Harmonices Mundi . Thanks in part to a telescope he received from Galileo (they knew each other through correspondence only), Kepler also advanced the science of optics. His achievements in astronomy and mathematics shaped our current understanding of the solar system. Kepler wrote a story, "Somnium," that wasn't published until after his death. In the story a man travels to the moon in a dream. Kepler accurately described the surface of the moon as dust and rocks.

Johannes Kepler
27 Dec. 1571 in Weil der Stadt (near Leonberg) - 15 Nov. 1630 in Regensburg Johannes Kepler discovered that planets move round the Sun in elliptical orbits. He gave three mathematical laws of planetary motion. Kepler was a devout, but not completely orthodox, Lutheran. He was a convinced Platonist, which is to say that he looked for mathematical relationships in the observable universe. Kepler attended the University of Tübingen, where his mathematical ability was noticed by his astronomy teacher Michael Maestlin. Officially Maestlin taught geocentric (Ptolemaic) astronomy, but able pupils, among them Kepler, were also introduced to the heliocentric astronomy of Copernicus (published in 1543). Kepler originally intended to become a priest, but was persuaded to take up a post teaching mathematics at Graz. In 1596, Kepler published his Mysterium Cosmographicum, which argues for the truth of the Copernican system by giving a mathematical explanation of its structure (in terms of regular polyhedra). In 1600, Kepler went to Prague, as assistant to Tycho Brahe. Brahe died in 1601, but Kepler went on to use his observations to calculate planetary orbits of unprecedented accuracy.
