Links Alfred Bray Kempe was the third son of John Edward Kempe who was Rector of St James's Church in Piccadilly, London. Alfred attended St Paul's School which, at this time, stood in the churchyard of St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London. It was one of the leading independent schools in England and had a high academic reputation. At school he was also able to pursue his love for music. Kempe had a very fine counter-tenor voice and as a member of St Paul's School Choral Society he sang the treble parts as a young boy, while later in his school career he sang alto. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, as a Camden Exhibitioner, having won this award in his final year at St Paul's School. At Cambridge he became known as a superb singer, having a piano in his rooms in College to accompany himself when he practiced his singing. Despite his love of mathematics and music, Kempe chose a profession which involved neither of these, becoming a barrister. He was called to the bar on 17 November 1873 and later became a Bencher of the Inner Circle in 1909 when he joined the Western Circuit. Both mathematics and music became hobbies to which he devoted much time. He married Mary Bowman in 1877.

A Study of Abstraction and Genericity in Pure Functional Programming Languages
Not yet submitted. (November 1995) Abstract: The purpose of this project was to study abstraction and genericity in pure functional languages, and to compare them with those provided by a high-level imperative programming language, i.e. Ada 95, since Ada is known for the quality of its design and the power of its basic mechanisms. One important criterion of analysis was the approach to and ease of composition of abstractions. This analysis is carried in the context of a proposed model of abstraction. This model distinguishes the properties condensed by an abstraction and the particular, omitted measurements of these properties-to account for the relationship between concretes and the abstraction subsuming them. Generalization and specialization, two kinds of relationships between abstractions, are described in the same context. Successful libraries of reusable components depend on the development of powerful abstractions and their ease of composition. This requires careful analysis and fruitful design choices. A far-sighted choice of abstractions is possible only if one is not blinded by the programming language or paradigm used.

Kempe chains
Alfred B. Kempe ( bio at St Andrews ) first used these chains, now called after him, in 1879 in a ``proof'' of the four-color conjecture . Although Percy Heawood found a flaw in his proof 11 years later, the idea of Kempe chains itself is quite sound. Heawood used it to prove 5 colors suffice for maps on the plane , and the 1976 proof by Appel, Haken and Koch is also based on Kempe's ideas. The original Kempe chains were used in the context of colorings of countries on a map, or in modern terminology face colorings of a plane graph (such that no two adjacent faces receive the same color). The idea was extended by Heawood to embeddings of a graph in any other surface. Here

List of Known Peirce Correspondents
This list includes names of persons Peirce sent letters to and/or received letters from, either probably or certainly, and names of people who wrote letters concerning Peirce, a few of which Peirce had copies of, that have been retrieved in different archives. The list also includes names of institutions. We strongly wish that readers interested in this list would look for a number of the names in their local archives in the hope of finding new Peirce-related letters. We expect that thousands of letters by Peirce still survive in unsearched archives both in the U.S. and abroad. Please join the effort in their recovery!

See How to Edit and Style and How-to for help, or this article's talk page Example of a four color map The four color theorem states that any plane separated into regions, such as a political map of the counties of a state, can be colored using no more than four colors in such a way that no two adjacent regions receive the same color. Two regions are called adjacent if they share a border segment, not just a point. Each region must be contiguous - that is it may not be partitioned as are Michigan and Azerbaijan It is obvious that three colors are inadequate, and it is not at all difficult to prove that five colors are sufficient to color a map. The four color theorem was the first major theorem to be proven using a computer, and the proof is not accepted by all mathematicians because it would be infeasible for a human to verify by hand. Ultimately, one has to have faith in the correctness of the compiler and hardware executing the program used for the proof.
History
The conjecture was first proposed in when Francis Guthrie , while trying to color the map of counties of England , noticed that only four different colors were needed. At the time, Guthrie was a student of

Graph Theory and Enumeration
Course designed by Dale Winter
The goals of this project are, firstly, to acquaint you with some of the ideas and principles involved in the mathematical study of counting and combinatorial graphs, and secondly, to provide a starting point for mathematical explorations of your own.
The theory of graphs started in a paper published in 1736 by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler. The idea in Euler's paper, which has blossomed into graph theory, grew out of a now popular problem known as the "Seven Bridges of Königsberg." The problem goes something like this:
It was said that people spent their Sundays walking around, trying to find a starting point so that they could walk about the city, cross each bridge exactly once, and then return to their starting point. Can you find a starting point, and a path around the city that allow you to do this?
Another famous problem that we will develop tools to help us with is the "Four Color Problem."

T39N R43E Sec 29
Transcribed by Maggie Rail, Dec 25, 2002, last edited Apr 11, 2005 [ mrail@asisna.com ]. Total records = 325. To reach the cemetery, take the first road to your left as you are driving north into Metaline on Hwy 20. It is up a rather steep incline, then keep to the left. The cemetery is at the end of the road. The town is small if you get lost, just ask someone. The cemetery is owned and well maintained by the town of Metaline. When I was reading it, a survey team was working the cemetery, replatting it. They said it was difficult because there was no planning with the first burials. They were trying to lay it out with a better plan and still utilize the most space. Listings followed by an asterisk * are from a reading in 'Tombstones Transcriptions' pub. in 1976 by, EWGS. I walked and read this cemetery on Aug 18, 2002. This reading includes all visible headstones. I have a photo of each marker if anyone should want one, I am willing to share. There may be some I did not get a good photo of.
