Alfred Kempe was the third son of John Edward Kempe who was Rector of St James's Church in Piccadilly, London. Alfred attended St Paul's School which, at this time, stood in the churchyard of St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London. It was one of the leading independent schools in England and had a high academic reputation. At school he was also able to pursue his love for music. Kempe had a very fine counter-tenor voice and as a member of St Paul's School Choral Society he sang the treble parts as a young boy, while later in his school career he sang alto. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, as a Camden Exhibitioner, having won this award in his final year at St Paul's School. At Cambridge he became known as a superb singer, having a piano in his rooms in College to accompany himself when he practiced his singing. His two loves of mathematics and music were cleverly caught by one of his fellow students who composed the following rhyme to describe Kempe's relationship with his piano:- Mistress of humble tones and haughty

by Daina Taimina Cornell university's Reuleaux kinematic model collection includes many linkages; the most popular of these among mathematicians is the Peaucellier-Lipkin linkage . This article is a short introduction (not complete) to the history of the problem of how to change circular motion into straight-line motion and vice versa. Some mathematicians formulated this problem as: "How can you draw a straight line?" The peaucellier-Lipkin linkage was the first precise solution to this problem. When using a compass to draw a circle, we are not starting with a model of a circle; instead we are using a fundamental property of circles that the points on a circle are at a fixed distance from its center, which is Euclid's definition of a circle. Is there a tool (serving the role of a compass) that will draw a straight line? If, in this case, we want to use Euclid's definition: "A straight line is a line which lies evenly with the points on itself" it will not be of much help. One can say, "We can use a straightedge for constructing a straight line!" Well, how do you know that your straightedge is straight? How can you check that something is straight? What does "straight" mean? Think about it! As we can see in some 13th-century drawings of a sawmill (at right), mechanisms for changing circular motion to straight-line motion were in use in the 13th-century and probably originated much earlier. In 1588

Abstract
Ada 9X, the revised definition of the Ada programming language, provides support for object-oriented programming. This course examines the new, object-oriented features of the language, their use, and how they fit into Ada's strong type system and genericity mechanisms. Basic object-oriented mechanisms are covered, such as: extension, inheritance, and polymorphism. We then show how to integrate these mechanisms into good programming practice; topics include incremental programming, heterogeneous data structures, and mixin inheritance. The running theme is design for reuse.
Objectives
The tutorial is intended to present the object-oriented extensions of Ada 9X and to teach their methodological use. It demonstrates how Ada 9X supports the creation and use of reusable software components.

Quantifying the Debate: Ada vs. C++
by Donal J. Reifer

This paper appeared in Crosstalk 9(7), July 1996
(HTML) [@Crosstalk]
Abstract: Software developers continue to debate the virtues of C++ vs. Ada. In an attempt to provide a fair assessment, this is one consultant's analysis of cost, reliability, and maintainability metrics for similar commercial and military systems. Although this assessment favors C and C++ in some areas, Ada holds up well as a choice for weapon systems and airborne and spaceborne avionics. After he left government service, many people called D.J. Reifer for an update to the hard data he used to periodically publish the cost, reliability, and maintainability of systems developed with Ada, C, C++, and other software engineering technologies. Because these requests have value, he has taken the time to analyze the data he continues to get from the many organizations he helped during the past decade to institute a metrics data collection program.
