Back (The following was written by Jay Robert Hauben, and appeared in the book "Computer Pioneers," edited by J.A.N. Lee and published by the IEEE Computer Society Press, 1995. It also appears at http://www.columbia.edu/~jrh29/kemeny.html.
Reprinted with permission. John G. Kemeny: BASIC and DTSS: Everyone a Programmer Sadly, an important pioneer of the computer revolution has died. John G. Kemeny, co-inventor of the computer language BASIC and of the Dartmouth Time Sharing System (DTSS) and advocate of universal education in programming died unexpectedly on December 26, 1992. He was 66 years old. John Kemeny was born in Budapest on May 31, 1926. His education and intellectual development in Hungary must have been very impressive, but in 1940, to escape the Nazi tide, his family emigrated to New York City. Kemeny entered high school knowing virtually no English. He graduated three years later, first in his class and accepted at Princeton University to study mathematics. While at Los Alamos, Kemeny heard a lecture by fellow Hungarian born John von Neumann who was a consultant to the computer operation. Von Neumann proposed a fully electronic computer based on a binary number system, with internal memory for both data and a stored program. To Kemeny and the other "computers", von Neumann's machine sounded like a dream. Kemeny wondered if he would live long enough to ever use one. After the war, Kemeny returned to Princeton. In 1948-49, while finishing his dissertation, Kemeny served as Albert Einstein's research assistant at the Institute for Advanced Study. Von Neumann was at the Institute also, working on the machine he had described in his lecture two years earlier. Einstein and Kemeny crossed paths with von Neumann occasionally and had some long conversations concerning symbol handling as opposed to number handling computers.

Immunology: Shyness can be deadly AIDSWEEKLY Plus ; Monday, January 12, 2004
Staff Medical Writers NewsRx How you react to stress influences how easily you resist or succumb to disease, including viruses like HIV, discovered University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) AIDS Institute scientists. Reported in Biological Psychiatry , the new findings identify the immune mechanism that makes shy people more susceptible to infection than outgoing people. "Since ancient Greece, physicians have noticed that persons with a 'melancholic temperament' are more vulnerable to viral infections," said Steve Cole, principal investigator and assistant professor of hematology-oncology at the David Geffen School of Medicine and a member of the UCLA AIDS Institute. "During the AIDS epidemic, researchers found that introverted people got sick and died sooner than extroverted people," said Bruce Naliboff, coauthor and a clinical professor at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute and Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. "Our study pinpoints the biological mechanism that connects personality and disease." The UCLA team studied the effect of stress on viral replication in a group of 54 HIV-infected men. All of the men were still in the early stages of the disease and in good health. Each possessed high T-cell counts with detectable levels of virus in the blood.

Transcripts of oral history interviews with 43 individuals concerning their memories of mathematics at Princeton University during the 1930s. The interviews focus on the institutional and social context of the Princeton graduate program and the Institute for Advanced Study as they developed, as well as the personalities of the people involved. Prominent individuals involved with Princeton in the 1930s included James Alexander, Albert Einstein, Luther Eisenhart, Solomon Lefschetz, Marston Morse, Oswald Veblen, John von Neumann, Hermann Weyl and Eugene Wigner. Most of these individuals had died at the time of these interviews, however several faculty members as well as graduate students, visitors and permanent researchers took part in the oral history project. Arranged alphabetically by interviewee.

THE ART OF COARSE MATHEMATICS
Abstract: The central idea of calculus is that aspects of mathematics become much simpler when viewed at high magnification - "through a microscope". I will talk about a more recent discovery - that there is a similar simplification to be had by viewing things at high reduction - "through the wrong end of a telescope". Examples will include a geometrical perspective on telephone networks and pyramid-selling scams. Note: This talk will be accessible to undergraduates.
HOMOLOGY VIA COARSE GEOMETRY
T
Abstract: We'll see that coarse geometry is perfectly adapted to the construction of certain 'homology' theories, or to put it another way that homological tools can be used to compute coarse-geometric invariants. Attempting to push this idea as far as possible leads us to a geometric-analytic conjecture with many interesting consequences.
ON BEING AMENABLE
Abstract: A simple version of 'amenability' was defined in lecture 1. Recently it has been realized that this idea is quite central to a correct understanding of the conjecture formulated in lecture 2. In this final lecture we'll explore that connection, developing some interesting proofs as well as a menagerie of bizarre counterexamples.

Co-founder of Microsoft Corp. Allen left the company in 1985 but remained on the board of directors and as founded or financially supported several innovative computer ventures, including Asymetrix and Starware Corp. He is involved with a variety of other projects, including a Jimi Hendrix Museum in Seattle.
