Nearly 2,000 donors contributed $10.7 million during the 15-month challenge period to support the construction of Kemeny Hall , which will house the mathematics department and honor former Dartmouth President John G. Kemeny "The success of this challenge is a testament to both the respect people had for John Kemeny and their commitment to seeing Dartmouth advance its educational mission," said President James Wright. "John influenced so many lives - as a teacher, scholar, president, and public servant. This new facility, named in his honor, will better enable our distinguished faculty to do the same." Kemeny Hall, a brick and granite structure under construction just north of Baker-Berry Library, will reunite a mathematics department spread among three buildings. Slated to open in fall 2006, the 60,000-square-foot facility will provide "smart" classrooms, laboratories, and common spaces for student-faculty collaboration. The building will be attached to the new Haldeman Center , which will house the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding, the Fannie and Alan Leslie Center for the Humanities, and the Institute for the Study of Applied and Professional Ethics.

Kemeny. "We are grateful to the Kresge Foundation for helping Dartmouth recognize the important work of John Kemeny," said President James Wright. "John made the math department one of the finest in the country. The Kresge grant will allow our faculty and students to continue John's innovative work." A renowned mathematician born in Budapest, Kemeny joined the Dartmouth faculty in 1953 and was appointed chairman of the mathematics department two years later. In the early 1960s he and colleague Thomas Kurtz developed a pioneering computer language, BASIC, and the world's first widely used time-sharing system, which gave users simultaneous access to a central computer. As president from 1970 to 1981, Kemeny oversaw profound changes: the transition to coeducation, the recruitment of students of color, the renewal of a charter commitment to Native American education, and the guarantee of financial aid to meet the full needs of all admitted students. The author of several mathematical texts and a devoted teacher, he continued to teach undergraduate math throughout - and after - his presidency.

Kemeny The Commission considered three different possible recommendations for a temporary halt on construction permits. Eight different Commissioners voted for at least one of these proposals. Unfortunately, we could not agree on the appropriate criteria for such a halt. Our reasons for failure to reach agreement are complex and may be found by examining the transcripts of our meetings of October 16, 20, and 21. The following proposed recommendation was discussed extensively by the Commission: No new construction permits should be issued until the reports and recommendations of this Commission, the NRC self-evaluation, and the Congressional investigations are complete and until the President and Congress have had an adequate opportunity to consider such recommendations, including the recommendation to restructure the NRC. I was one of six Commissioners who voted in favor of this recommendation; four voted against it and two abstained. I very much regret that this important recommendation failed to obtain the seven-vote majority necessary to adopt it.
