Kelvin, Lord (William Thomson) (1824-1907)
A Scottish physicist, born in Ireland, who proposed the thermodynamic temperature scale (1848), now measured in kelvin Kelvin-Helmholtz contraction ). Again, he had no way of knowing that, in nuclear fusion , there is a vastly more potent way of generating heat and light.

Kelvin, Lord
KELVIN, Lord (William Thomson, 1824-1907).

Lord Kelvin (William Thomson) Click here for full size picture Introduction William Thomson, who was knighted in 1866 and was raised to the peerage in 1892 (as Baron Kelvin of Largs) in recognition of his work in engineering and physics, was foremost among the small group of British scientists who helped to lay the foundations of modern physics. His contributions to science included a major role in the development of the second law of thermodynamics; the absolute temperature scale (measured in kelvins); the dynamical theory of heat; the mathematical analysis of electricity and magnetism, including the basic ideas for the electromagnetic theory of light; the geophysical determination of the age of the Earth; and fundamental work in hydrodynamics. His theoretical work on submarine telegraphy and his inventions for use on submarine cables aided Britain in capturing a preeminent place in world communication during the 19th century. The style and character of Thomson's scientific and engineering work reflected his active personality. While a student at the University of Cambridge, he was awarded silver sculls for winning the university championship in racing single-seater rowing shells. He was an inveterate traveller all of his life, spending much time on the Continent and making several trips to the United States. In later life he commuted between homes in London and Glasgow. Thomson risked his life several times during the laying of the first transatlantic cable. Thomson's worldview was based in part on the belief that all phenomena that caused forcesuch as electricity, magnetism, and heatwere the result of invisible material in motion. This belief placed him in the forefront of those scientists who opposed the view that forces were produced by imponderable fluids. By the end of the century, however, Thomson, having persisted in his belief, found himself in opposition to the positivistic outlook that proved to be a prelude to 20th-century quantum mechanics and relativity. Consistency of worldview eventually placed him counter to the mainstream of science.

Lord Kelvin

Search Inventors The History Behind the Thermometer By Mary Bellis What is a Thermometer?
Thermometers measure temperature, by using materials that change in some way when they are heated or cooled. In a mercury or alcohol thermometer the liquid expands as it is heated and contracts when it is cooled, so the length of the liquid column is longer or shorter depending on the temperature. Modern thermometers are calibrated in standard temperature units such as Fahrenheit or Celsius.
Early History
The first thermometers were called thermoscopes and while several inventors invented a version of the thermoscope at the same time, Italian inventor Santorio Santorio was the first inventor to put a numerical scale on the instrument. Galileo Galilei invented a rudimentary water thermometer in 1593 which, for the first time, allowed temperature variations to be measured. In 1714, Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the first mercury thermometer, the modern thermometer.

- William Thomson - Lord Kelvin (1824-1907)
Born in Belfast, Thomson came to Glasgow at the age of six after the death of his Scottish mother and when his father became Professor of Mathematics at the University of Glasgow . He was taught by his father (he never went to school) and entered University at the age of 10 (and is in the Guiness Book of Records for that feat). By the age of 22 he had been to Cambridge and Paris Universities and was appointed Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University. He developed the science of thermodynamics, developed the second law of thermodynamics and formulated the "Kelvin" scale of absolute temperature. He invented the mirror galvanometer, a telegraph message receiver and supervised the laying of the first trans-Atlantic insulated electric telegraph cable which revolutionised world communications. He invented an electric strain gauge, an improved ship's compass, the Kelvin ampere balance and an electrostatic voltmeter amongst a host of other developments. Kelvin published 660 scientific papers, the first at age 16. But he was not just an academic scientist - he was a champion rower and founded the Glasgow University Music Society. He was knighted in 1866 for his contribution to telegraphy and created Baron Kelvin of Largs 1892. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.
