Lord Kelvin
Lord Kelvin was a British scientist who was born in Belfast, Ireland. He lived from 1824-1907. Lord Kelvin developed a temperature scale that is named after him. Kelvin's work with temperature and pressure systems led to the theory the energy cannot be destroyed, only passed from one form to another.
Lord Kelvin
Lord Kelvin was born as William Thomsen in Belfast, Ireland, in 1824. The absolute scale of temperature (Kelvin scale) is named after him as he was the first to develop its theory. Kelvin's work with Carnot's cycle led to the second law of thermodynamics. This law explains that heat cannot spontaneously pass from one object to another without some form of energy being transformed or lost. Both of these accomplishments lended toward a better understanding of our universe, from how an automobile engine works, to the dynamics of a thunderstorm, to how Earth obtains heat from the sun.

Lord Kelvin
Kelvin was born William Thomson in Belfast in 1824. Son of a mathematics professor he was educated in Scotland at the University of Glasgow (entering when he was 10 years old) and Cambridge, where he graduated in 1845. He also spend a year working with Pierre and Marie Curie and Henri Bequerel in Paris. Thomson set-up the first dedicated Physics Laboratory in the United Kingdom at the University of Glasgow in 1846. For his impressive and wide ranging efforts to Science, including notable contributions to thermodynamics, electromagnetic theory, communication (first transatlantic cable link) and of course contact potentials, he was knighted in 1866 and received the title Baron Kelvin of Largs in 1892. 'Kelvin' was the name of a stream running through the University campus. The day after Kelvin formally retired from Glasgow University he enrolled as a student. Lord Kelvin died in 1907 and was appropriately buried next to Issac Newton in Westminster Abbey. He published 661 papers, took out 70 patents and had more initials after his name than any other man in the British Commonwealth! The picture below shows a statue of Lord Kelvin that was erected in Glasgow to commemorate his achievements. Kelvin was one of the most gifted scientists of his generation. He was by all accounts a talented orator and was sufficiently confident in his experimental methods to incorporate public demonstration of his methods. It is perhaps fitting to reproduce a sketch of his original experimental arrangement which incorporating large plates of Copper and Zinc (which have clean work functions of 4.6 and 4.7 eV respectively) mounted on insulating shafts. I am indebted to Ing. Kees van der Werf, of the University of Twente, The Netherlands, who is both a skilled scientist and artist, for the reproduction.

KELVIN IS LORD!!!
ALL PRAISE THE LORD KELVIN!!
Only The One, True Lord KELVIN Can Conserve You From Entropy!
Who Is This Man Called Kelvin?
Who is the Lord Kelvin? Perhaps you have asked yourself this as you have heard others speak of Him. Well, I have good news for you: the Lord Kelvin Loves you and wishes to Conserve you from Entropy . "Now, slow down a minute buddy! I don't quite understand what all THIS means!" You are, no doubt, wanting to say to me. That's OK, for I was once like you and didn't know about the Lord , the one true Lord Kelvin . Let me tell you about our Lord, for He is your Lord as He is mine: the Lord Kelvin chose to come among us as a Man so that He may give us His teachings. He didn't have to , He chose to! He did this because He loves us, for we are His Creation . As is our Universe. The Lord Kelvin created it all. For He is more than just the Man that moved among us, He is the Lord of Our Universe, the Second Wrangler who is also the Senior Wrangler! The Sublime Mystery that is the Lord Kelvin transcends our ability to grasp, but all we need to know is that He LOVES us and wants the best for His Children.

Kelvin, Lord William Thomson (1824-1907)

Scottish mathematician and physicist who contributed to many branches of physics. He was known for his self-confidence, and as an undergraduate at Cambridge he thought himself the sure "Senior Wrangler" (the name given to the student who scored highest on the Cambridge mathematical Tripos exam). After taking the exam he asked his servant, "Oh, just run down to the Senate House, will you, and see who is Second Wrangler." The servant returned and informed him, " You, sir!" (Campbell and Higgens, p. 98, 1984). Another example of his hubris is provided by his 1895 statement "heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible" (Australian Institute of Physics), followed by his 1896 statement, "I have not the smallest molecule of faith in aerial navigation other than ballooning...I would not care to be a member of the Aeronautical Society." Kelvin is also known for an address to an assemblage of physicists at the British Association for the advancement of Science in 1900 in which he stated, "There is nothing new to be discovered in physics now. All that remains is more and more precise measurement." A similar statement is attributed to the American physicist Albert Michelson Kelvin argued that the key issue in the interpretation of the Second Law of Thermodynamics was the explanation of irreversible processes. He noted that if entropy always increased, the universe would eventually reach a state of uniform temperature and maximum entropy from which it would not be possible to extract any work. He called this the Heat Death of the Universe. With

William Thomson 's father, James Thomson, had originally intended to become a minister of the Presbyterian Church but had opted for an academic career as a mathematician. William's mother died when he was six years old and from that time he was brought up by his father. James Thomson was the professor of engineering in Belfast at the time of William's birth and, when William was eight years old, his father James was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University of Glasgow. James Thomson was a dominant father who brought his family up in a strict Presbyterian fashion. William's sister wrote of this childhood [4]:- Our father read to us regularly every Sunday morning some chapters in the Old Testament, and in the evening some in the New. However, despite his father being very strict he had a very close relationship with William. It was from his father that William learn mathematics and at a very young age he became an accomplished mathematician with knowledge of the latest developments in the subject.

Thomson also made other substantial contributions to thermodynamics and the theory of electricity and magnetism, and he was largely responsible for the first successful transatlantic telegraph cable. Kelvin Kelvin of Largs. Kelvin retired from his chair at Glasgow in 1899 and died at Largs, Ayrshire, on 17 December 1907. Thomson's early work, begun in 1842 while he was still at Cambridge, was a comparison of the distribution of electrostatic force in a region with the distribution of heat through a solid. He found that they are mathematically equivalent, leading him in 1847 to conclude that electrical and magnetic fields are distributed in a manner analogous to the transfer of energy through an elastic solid. James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) later developed this idea into a comprehensive explanation of the electromagnetic field. From 1849 to 1859, Kelvin also developed the discoveries and theories of paramagnetism and diamagnetism made by Michael Faraday (1791-1867) into a full theory of magnetism, developing the terms magnetic permeability and susceptibility, and arriving at an expression for the total energy of a system of magnets.
