12: Field theory and polynomials
Introduction
Field theory considers sets, such as the real number line, on which all the usual arithmetic properties hold - those governing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The study of multiple fields through Galois theory is important for the study of polynomial equations, and thus has applications to number theory and group theory. Tools in this area can also be used to show certain Euclidean geometry constructions are impossible, and that certain functions have no elementary antiderivative! Specifically, a field is a commutative ring in which every nonzero element is assumed to have a multiplicative inverse. Examples include the real number field R, the complex numbers C, the rational numbers Q, finite fields (the Galois fields with p^n elements for some prime p), the p-adic numbers Q_p, and various fields of functions such as the collection of meromorphic entire functions. All these examples are of characteristic zero except the finite fields (if there is a finite set of 1's which add to zero, the cardinality of the smallest such set is the characteristic, a prime). Some themes of field theory are then immediately apparent.

The rings considered in this section are both commutative and associative. For rings which are not assumed to be commutative, see Associative Rings and Algebras . Rings (commutative or otherwise) which are not even assumed associative, such as Lie algebras, are part of Nonassociative Rings Commutative rings with the added feature that all nonzero elements have inverses are fields, the topic of 12: Field Theory and Polynomials Generally, the rings of integers in number fields are part of algebraic number theory , but I have included here some files regarding their ring structure (e.g. Euclidean domains and Unique Factorization Domains (UFDs).) For studies of sets of ideals in rings (particularly rings of polynomials) see Algebraic Geometry . In some sense algebraic geometry and commutative ring theory are simply two languages for the same ideas.

SIAM News Quick Search: Setting the author straight on the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute's place in the world was MSRI deputy director Joe Buhler (left). With him are MSRI director David Eisenbud (center) and special projects director Robert Osserman. The remoteness of the site of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute belies MSRI's active agenda of reaching out to establish connections, not only with researchers in widely ranging areas of mathematics but throughout science and technology and, through activities like its Journalist in Residence program, with society.

Sitting on Grizzly Peak, high in the clouds above Berkeley, California, with its positive y-axis pointed directly toward the Golden Gate Bridge (a fact asserted with more assurance than is the presumptive orientation of Stonehenge), with its mortgage to UC Berkeley not yet paid off, the site of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) seems to express well the remoteness of mathematical thought from all human connections. Here, it would seem, mathematicians can sit in their visually multiconnected minimall-like structure and, on eigendays when the fog permits, look out and see four major bridges.

Collected Works in Mathematics and Statistics
This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. The thumbnail sketches of mathematicians were taken from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at the University of St. Andrews. For correction, comments, or questions, write to Karl Dilcher ( dilcher@mscs.dal.ca You can scroll through this list, or jump to the beginning of the letter:
