He was the winner of the 1975 Nobel Prize in Economics.
Kantorovich worked for the Soviet government. He was given the task of optimizing production in a plywood industry. He came up with the mathematical technique known as linear programming. He authored several books including The Mathematical Method of Production Planning and Organization and The Best Uses of Economic Resources.

Nobel Prize, October 1975 Dr. Tjalling C. Koopmans, the co-winner of the 1975 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science for his theories on the optimal allocation of resources, died Tuesday at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was 74 years old and lived in Hamden, Conn. Dr. Koopmans shared the prize with the Russian economist Leonid Kantorovich for their work, independent of each other, in developing mathematical solutions to problems faced by most enterprises: maximizing production with limited resources or minimizing the cost of producing an assortment of goods. "Kantorovich worked on the Soviet railway system," Dr. Koopmans once told an interviewer, "and I learned how to program tramp ships around the world. But it was essentially the same method. Unknowingly, he and I had been on the same lines." Linear Programming The problem Dr. Koopmans tackled was how to find the most cost-effective way to ship goods from a large number of sources to a large number of destinations.

The Rolodex of Famous Economists What makes an economist famous? There are two basic criteria, and which are at times uncorrelated with each other: recognition by one's colleagues and recognition by the public at large. Among economists, being famous tends to translate in terms of the number of published works, along with the number of times such work is cited by other economists. Published work and citations are what drives, for example, the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics selection process. As Paul Samuelson once said, the only coin of worth among economists is the recognition by one's colleagues. Critics of economics have pointed to the insular nature of recognition criteria practiced by economists and have contended that all too often they write with an increasingly abstruse theoretical and mathematical jargon that ignores too many real world issues. As one economist once said when the empirical data did not fit well in a standard econometric model, "So much the worse for reality". Yet economists have exerted a powerful influence on the course of events over times and they have done so by translating what seems at times as overly abstract notions into concrete tools of understanding economic events, predicting future events, and guiding public policy. As a sampler, consider the following economists. Adam Smith (1723-1790) is famous for his

    Arrow, Kenneth Joseph

Kenneth J. Arrow, b. New York City, Aug. 23, 1921, shared the Nobel Prize for economics, with Sir John R. Hicks, in 1972 for his contributions to economic theory. Considered a highly original thinker in mathematical economics, he developed the "impossibility theorem," which states that a perfect system of democratic choice-making is impossible in principle.
    Beccaria, Cesare Bonesana
Cesare Bonesana Beccaria, b. Mar. 15, 1738, d. Nov. 28, 1794, was an Italian criminologist and economist. His Dei deliti e delle pene (Essay on Crimes and Punishments, 1764) is one of the most influential treatises on criminal justice ever written. He held that punishment should not exceed what was necessary to maintain public order. He opposed capital punishment, torture, and secret proceedings. The 19th-century English reformer Jeremy BENTHAM took up Beccaria's ideas, and they influenced the penal laws of a number of European countries. Beccaria also wrote on economics, anticipating some of the ideas of Adam SMITH and Thomas MALTHUS. From 1771 until his death he served as a public official in Milan.
Bibliography: Maestro, Marcello, Cesare Beccaria and the Origins of Penal Reform (1972) and Voltaire and Beccaria as Reformers in Criminal Law (1942; repr. 1972); Phillipson, Coleman, Three Criminal Law Reformers: Beccaria, Bentham, Romilly (1923).

Kantorovich Research Chair in Stochastic Differential Games Back to the news. The Kantorovich Foundation is established to honor the memory of one of the most distinguished graduates, Nobel laureate and professors Academician Leonid Vitalievich Kantorovich (1912 -1986) of the Faculty of Mathematics at St Petersburg State University, Russia.
By fostering scientific interest in mathematical analysis in economics, the Foundation hopes and endeavors to contribute to the development of new ideas in economics, mathematics and related disciplines.
Professor Leon Petrosyan and Professor David Yeung are currently Co-Chairs of the Foundation. Professor Petrsoyan is a pioneering researcher in cooperative dynamic games and Professor Yeung is a leading researcher in stochastic differential games. They have made extensive and significant scientific contributions in these fields. Among the notable contributions of Professor Petrosyan are his seminal concepts of dynamic stability in games, payoff distribution procedures and regularization procedures. Among the notable contributions of Professor Yeung are a new paradigm in stochastic differential games, the first publication of a stochastic differential financial game, and pioneering methodologies for solving overlapping-generations stochastic differential games and infinite horizon stochastic differential games with branching payoffs.
Recently Professor Petrosyan and Professor Yeung jointly developed a formal and rigorous platform for the study of cooperative stochastic differential games. In particular, their work has delivered a significant breakthrough in the form of a generalized method to derive analytically tractable solutions. This pioneering technique allows researchers to explore hitherto intractable problems in stochastic dynamic cooperation, and open up rigorous study in cooperative stochastic games.

Solutions to Monge-Kantorovich equations, expressing optimality condition in mass transportation problem with cost equal to distance, are stationary points of a critical-slope model for sand surface evolution. Using a dual variational formulation of sand model, we compute both the optimal transport density and Kantorovich potential as a stationary limit of evolving sand flux and sand surface, respectively.
