Born: 19 Jan 1912 in St Petersburg, Russia
Died: 7 April 1986 in USSR Leonid Kantorovich studied at Leningrad State University, receiving his doctorate in mathematics in 1930. From 1934 to 1960 he was a professor at Leningrad. He held the chair of mathematics and economics in the Siberian branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1961-1971), then directed research at Moscow's Institute of National Economic Planning (1971-76). L. Kantorovich entered the ranks of the greatest scientists of the 20th century due his fundamental input into mathematics and economics. His research in functional analysis, computational mathematics, optimization, and descriptive function theory and set theory greately the formation of these disciplines and layed the basics of new directions in research. Kantorovich was one of the first to use linear programming as a tool in economics. His background was entirely in mathematics but he showed a considerable feel for the underlying economics to which he applied the mathematical techniques. Member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences (1964).

Leonid Vitalyevich Kantorovich
Leonid Vital'evich Kantorovich studied mathematics at Leningrad State University, receiving his doctorate in mathematics in 1930 at the age of eighteen. From 1934 to 1960 he was a professor of mathematics at Leningrad University. He held the chair of mathematics and economics in the Siberian branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1961-1971), then directed research at Moscow's Institute of National Economic Planning (1971-76). Kantorovich's background was entirely in mathematics but he showed a considerable feel for the underlying economics to which he applied the mathematical techniques. He was one of the first to use linear programming as a tool in economics and this appeared in a publication Mathematical methods of organising and planning production which he published in 1939. Makarov writes in [24]:- This may be considered a historic document, containing the facts about discovery of the linear programming. The mathematical formulation of production problems of optimal planning was presented here for the first time and the effective methods of their solution and economic analysis were proposed. Kantorovich introduced many new concepts into the study of mathematical programming such as giving necessary and sufficient optimality conditions on the base of supporting hyperplanes at the solution point in the production space, the concept of primal-dual methods, the interpretation in economics of multipliers, and the column-generation method used in linear programming.

I was born in Petersburg (Leningrad) on 19th January 1912. My father, Vitalij Kantorovich, died in 1922 and it was my mother, Paulina (Saks), who brought me up. Some of the first events of my childhood were the February and the October Revolutions of 1917, and a one-year trip to Byelorussia during the Civil War.
My first interest in sciences and the first displays of self-dependent thinking manifested themselves about 1920. On entering the Mathematical Department of the Leningrad University in 1926, I was mainly interested in sciences (but also in political economy and modern history, thanks to the most vivid lectures of academician E. Tarle).
At the University, I attended lectures and worked in seminars of V.I. Smirnov, G.M. Fichtengolz, B.N. Delaunay; my University friends were I.P. Natanson, S.L. Sobolev, S.G. Michlin, D.K. and V.N. Faddeevs.
My scientific activities started in my second university year covering the rather more abstract fields of mathematics. I think my most significant research in those days was that connected with analytical operations on sets and on projective sets (1929-30) where I solved some N.N. Lusin problems. I reported these results to the First All-Union Mathematical Congress in Kharkov (1930).
My participation in the work of the Congress was an important episode in my life; here I met such outstanding Soviet mathematicians as S.N. Bernstein, P.S. Alexandrov, A.N. Kolmogorov, A.O. Gelfond

    Leonid Vitalievich Kantorovich (1912-86)
Leonid Kantorovich shared the 1975 Nobel Prize with Tjalling Koopmans "for their contributions to the theory of optimum allocation of resources." Kantarovich was born and died in Russia and did all his professional work there. His first major breakthrough came in 1938 when he was consulting to the Soviet government's Laboratory of the Plywood Trust. Asked to devise a technique for distributing raw materials to maximize output, Kantorovich saw that the problem was a mathematical one: to maximize a linear function subject to many constraints. The technique he developed is now known as linear programming. In a 1939 book, The Mathematical Method of Production Planning and Organization, Kantorovich showed that all problems of economic allocation can be seen as maximizing a function subject to constraints. Across the world John Hicks in Britain and Paul Samuelson in the United States were reaching the same conclusion at around the same time. Kantorovich, like Samuelson, showed that certain coefficients in the equations could be regarded as the prices of each input. Kantorovich's best-known book is The Best Uses of Economic Resources.

Koopmans was also like Kantorovich in generalizing his approach from one sector of the economy to the economy as a whole. Koopmans showed the conditions required for economy-wide efficiency in allocating resources. He also, again like Kantorovich, used his activity-analysis techniques to derive efficient criteria for allocating between the present and the future. Koopmans was an economist with the Cowles Commission at the University of Chicago between 1944 and 1955, and then moved with the Cowles Commission to Yale University, where he became professor of economics until he retired in 1981. Koopmans became an American citizen in 1946. He served as president of the American Economic Association in 1981. Selected Works "Exchange Ratios between Cargoes on Various Routes (Non-Refrigerating Dry Cargoes)." Memorandum for the Combined Shipping Adustment Board. 1942. Reprinted in Koopmans. Scientific Papers.

Page: Section: OBITUARY MOSCOW Leonid Kantorovich, a Soviet mathematician who won the 1975 Nobel memorial prize for economic research, died at 74 Monday after what officials said was a long illness. He had worked at the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk. An official at the academy said Mr. Kantorovich was buried yesterday at Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. Mr. Kantorovich was considered the father of Soviet econometrics the application of mathematics and statistics to economic problems but was slow to receive recognition at home and internationally. He won the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science in 1975, the same year Soviet physicist Andrei A. Sakharov received the Nobel Peace Prize after years of dissident activities and campaigning for human rights and disarmament.
