Kantorovich, Leonid Vitalyevich
Leonid V. Kantorovich (b. Jan. 19 [Jan. 6, Old Style], 1912, St. Petersburg, Russiad. April 7, 1986, U.S.S.R.), Soviet mathematician and economist who shared the 1975 Nobel Prize for Economics with Tjalling Koopmans for their work on the optimal allocation of scarce resources. Kantorovich was educated at Leningrad State University, receiving his doctorate in mathematics (1930) there at the age of 18. He became a professor at Leningrad in 1934, a position he held until 1960. He headed the department of mathematics and economics in the Siberian branch of the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences from 1961 to 1971 and then served as head of the research laboratory at Moscow's Institute of National Economic Planning (1971-76). Kantorovich was elected to the prestigious Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union (1964) and was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1965. His most famous work is The Best Use of Economic Resources (1959). Kantorovich pioneered the technique of linear programming as a tool of economic planning, having developed a linear programming model in 1939. He used such mathematical techniques to show how the decentralization of decision making in a planned economy ultimately depends on a system in which prices are based on the relative scarcity of resources. Although his background was purely mathematical, his work showed a keen understanding of the economic aspects of problems. He developed a concept called resolving multipliers that corresponds to the shadow prices in Western economic literature. In his own country Kantorovich was a notable "reform" economist whose nondogmatic critical analyses of Soviet economic policy clashed with the views of his orthodox Marxist colleagues.

Kantorovich, Leonid Vitalievich Kantorovich was a professor of economics at the University of Leningrad from 1944 to 1960. He became the Director of Mathematical Economic Methods at the Siberian Division of the Soviet Academy of Science in 1960. He was appointed as the Laboratory Chie f of the Institute of National Economic Management in Moscow in 1971. He shared the Nobel Prize in 1975 with Tjalling Koopman "for their contribution to the theory of optimum allocation of resources."
"His first major breakthrough came in 1938 when he was consulting to the Soviet Government's Laboratory of the Plywood Trust. Asked to devise a technique for distributing raw materials to maximize inputs, Kantorovich saw that the problem was a mathematic al one: to maximize a linear function subject ot many contstraints. This technique he developed is now known as linear programming." Leonid V. Kantorovich was born in the city of Leningrad in January of 1912 to a meager family. His father, Vitalij Kantorovich, died when Leonid was only 10 years old, leaving his mother, Paulina to raise him herself. Leonid grew up during violent times in Russia. During the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, Leonid and his mother fled to Byelorussia to escape the bloodshed before returning to their home more than a year later (Kantorovich). Leonid was a naturally inquisitive child with a broad range of interests including politics and modern history. Upon entering the Mathematical Department of the Leningrad University at the mere age of 14, Leonid soon realized that his main interests lay in the fields of science and mathematics. Leonid immediately excelled at mathematics and within his second year at the University he was already working on complex and abstract mathematics. By the age of eighteen, Leonid had already distinguished himself as an authority in mathematics. When Leonid graduated from the university he remained there to teach and continue his research in theoretical mathematics. By this period in his life, Leonid had begun to shift his concentration towards applied mathematics problems. His work in theoretical mathematics was quite renowned among his colleagues and he had received numerous accolades for his work in that field. As it would turn out, Leonid’s greatest contributions would not be in theoretical mathematics at all, but rather applied mathematical economics. Such accomplishments would not have been possible, however, were it not for his early work in mathematical theory (Kantorovich).

I was born in Petersburg (Leningrad) on 19th January 1912. My father, Vitalij Kantorovich, died in 1922 and it was my mother, Paulina (Saks), who brought me up. Some of the first events of my childhood were the February and the October Revolutions of 1917, and a one-year trip to Byelorussia during the Civil War.
My first interest in sciences and the first displays of self-dependent thinking manifested themselves about 1920. On entering the Mathematical Department of the Leningrad University in 1926, I was mainly interested in sciences (but also in political economy and modern history, thanks to the most vivid lectures of academician E. Tarle).
At the University, I attended lectures and worked in seminars of V.I. Smirnov, G.M. Fichtengolz, B.N. Delaunay; my University friends were I.P. Natanson, S.L. Sobolev, S.G. Michlin, D.K. and V.N. Faddeevs.
My scientific activities started in my second university year covering the rather more abstract fields of mathematics. I think my most significant research in those days was that connected with analytical operations on sets and on projective sets (1929-30) where I solved some N.N. Lusin problems. I reported these results to the First All-Union Mathematical Congress in Kharkov (1930).
My participation in the work of the Congress was an important episode in my life; here I met such outstanding Soviet mathematicians as S.N. Bernstein, P.S. Alexandrov, A.N. Kolmogorov, A.O. Gelfond

He held the chair of mathematics and economics in the Siberian branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1961-1971), then directed research at Moscow's Institute of National Economic Planning (1971-76). Kantorovich's background was entirely in mathematics but he showed a considerable feel for the underlying economics to which he applied the mathematical techniques. He was one of the first to use linear programming as a tool in economics and this appeared in a publication Mathematical methods of organising and planning production which he published in 1939. Makarov writes in [24]:-
