Dear Jasper, Here is some fun for the Centenary of 2005. I've known for some time that I had a direct link back to Arnold Sommerfeld through my Ph.D. advisor, Sebastian Doniach , whose Ph.D. advisor, Herbert Froehlich was a doctoral student of Sommerfeld put sample table here, or at the end] Recently a collaborator told me about Erdös numbers http://www-users.med.cornell.edu/~jdvicto/erdos.html ]which link mathematical scientists to Paul Erdös , a very prolific collaborator. My Erdös number is 6, where Erdös himself is assigned zero. It seems that there is also an Einstein number. Pedro Goldman ( UWO ) was advised by Nathan Rosen, who wrote that famous Einstein-Rosen- Podolsky paper with Albert. Thus Pedro has an Einstein number of 2. Clearly YOU can be a 3 by writing a paper with Pedro! Back in March 1999 APS News ran a contest on "Discovering Our Roots: The PhD Lineage Contest Winners", [ http://www.aps.org/apsnews/0399/039916.cfm So my suggestion for a new Canadian contest to celebrate the "World Year of Physics 2005: Einstein in the 21st Century" is to launch a competition amongst Canadian physicists (those with a professional position in physics) to see who can trace their genealogy back farthest, etc.

Rod Edwards,
Mathematical Genealogy
The Mathematics Genealogy Project keeps track of the "genealogy" of mathematicians, where the "parental" relationship is that of PhD Advisor. Some students have more than one advisor, so the line of ancestry can have branches, but my main line of ancestry is as follows (with years referring to year of PhD or equivalent).
  • Roderick Edwards (1994)
  • Reinhard Illner (1976)
  • Jens Peter Guenter Frehse (1968)
  • Harro Heuser (1957)

HANS KOSCHNICK POSES A QUESTION
WHICH THE JULY DEMOCRATS MUST ALSO ANSWER
by Lyndon H. LaRouche, Jr.
The June 20th edition of Germany's prominent conservative daily, Die Welt, featured a June 17th interview with a former Vice-President of that nation's Social- Democratic Party (SPD), Hans Koschnick, in which he delivered a challenge to his SPD which must also be taken very much to heart by the U.S. Democratic Party's coming July, Boston convention. I explain the strategic implications of the relevant connection. To understand the crises now actually gripping all U.S.A. and European parties today, we must focus upon the feature of European politics which had formerly situated the European Social-Democracy as among the durable kingpins of European politics, prior to, and after the wave of fascist takeovers during the 1922-1945 interval. To understand that particular crisis of European social-democracy now spreading across Europe, it is relevant to see today's crisis of those, and other leading parties, in the light of the fact today, that, from the outset, what emerged as the socialist political movements of the 19th and 20th centuries, was deeply divided between two leading currents whose conflicts often dominated the same political party.

Probably almost all mathematicians working today, if they trace back to find who were their teachers and the teachers of their teachers, and so on, will find that they are the "descendants" of a number of very famous mathematicians. In my case I found that, via my splendid Ph.D. supervisor Yoram Sagher, I am the "descendant" of, among others, Jacob and Johann Bernoulli, Chebyshev, Darboux, Dirichlet, Euler, Fourier, Gauss, Hilbert, Klein, Lagrange, Leibniz, Markov, Picard, Poisson, Sierpinski, Steinhaus, and Zygmund. My mathematical "genealogy" is shown in five files. (Several files are needed because some of my "ancestors" had two Ph.D. supervisors.) Just click on each number to go to the corresponding file. I obtained the information in these files from the mathematical genealogy website.
http://www.genealogy.math.ndsu.nodak.edu

or its "mirror", which currently works better, at
http://www.genealogy.ams.org
More information about my teacher and my teacher's teacher's (where "teacher" means supervisor for Ph.D.) etc. and their theses can be found via this website. In these files, the year when, and city or university where a mathematician obtained his doctoral degree is written under his name, if these are known. A number in square brackets [N] next to the name of some mathematician where N=1,2,3,4 or 5, means that by clicking on that "[N]" you can move to the file which contains details of the mathematical "ancestry" of that mathematician.
