He was born in Krzemieniec and died in California, USA. His main interest was probability. His question "can you hear the shape of a drum?" set off research into spectral theory, with the idea of understanding the extent to which the spectrum allows one to read back the geometry. (In the end, the answer was "no", in general.) His book of popularisation with Stanislaw Ulam is a minor classic. Mark Kac Resources Contact Us Sitemap

Recurrence Times of Stochastic Processes (also Hitting, Waiting, and First-Passage Times)
10 Jun 2005 07:06 The recurrence time of a state or a finite trajectory is simply how long one must wait to revisit the state, or re-traverse that trajectory. One can learn a lot about a stochastic process by understanding its recurrence times. For instance, Mark Kac proved a very beautiful theorem which says that, for a stationary, discrete-valued stochastic process, the expected recurrence time of a finite trajectory is just the reciprocal of the probability of encountering the trajectory in the first place. This suggests a very simple way to estimate the probability distribution of trajectories. Similarly, one can use the recurrence times to estimate the entropy rate. Vague, Kac-inspired question : Clearly, if you had a function which gave you the expected recurrence time of an arbitrary finite trajectory, you'd have a function which also gave you all the finite-dimensional marginal distributions of the generating process. But how does one express the higher moments of the recurrence times (the variance, for starters), and might there be some way of trading off knowing more about the higher moments of shorter trajectories for knowing more first moment of longer trajectories? Colleges, voordrachtenseries, cursussen e.d. HPOPT 2000: 5th International Conference on High Performance Optimization Techniques Date/location: June 7-9, 2000; Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Aim of the Conference: HPOPT 2000 will take place in the context of the Dutch research project 'High Performance Models for Mathematical Optimization'. In this project, funded by the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), research teams cooperate from four universities in the Netherlands: Delft University of Technology, Erasmus University, Eindhoven University of Technology, and University of Utrecht. The aim of the conference is to bring together some of the most active researchers working on the design and implementation of optimization algorithms. We aim to cover the latest algorithmic developments, complexity results and implementation aspects, including the required tools from numerical algebra. Much attention will be given to the recent developments in semidefinite optimization and its relevance for a wide range of practical applications in fields such as combinatorial optimization, engineering design, matrix inequalities in systems and control theory, and matrix completion problems. The meeting will consist of a one day tutorial and a two-day conference. Next to invited presentations there will be sessions with contributed lectures. The one day tutorial will be devoted to models and algorithms for optimization under uncertainty. Specifically, robust and stochastic optimization. Mathematics and Logic

Given the small size of the book (170 pages), it’s unbelievable how much the authors managed to put in. It’s even more astonishing that virtually none of the topics is discussed in a superficial manner. Besides profound examples included in the first chapter G.-C. Rota wrote in his Indiscrete Thoughts It took me several years to realize what Stan Ulam's real profession was. Many of us at the Los Alamos Laboratory who were associated with him knew how much he disliked being alone, how he would summon us at odd times to be rescued from the loneliness of some hotel room, or from the four walls of his office after he had exhausted his daily round of long distance calls. One day I mustered the courage to ask him why he constantly wanted company, and his answer gave him away. "When I am alone," he admitted, "I am forced to think things out, and I see so much that I would rather not think about!" I then saw the man in his true light. The man who had the highest record of accurate guesses in mathematics, the man who could beat engineers at their game, who could size up characters and events in a flash, was a member of an all-but-extinct profession, the profession of prophet. Mathematic and Logic
Mark Kac and Stanislaw M. Ulam
What is mathematics? How was it created and who were and are the people creating and practicing it? Can one describe its development and role in the history of scientific thinking and can one predict the future? This book is a thought provoking attempt to answer such questions and to suggest the scope and depth of the subject. The volume begins with a discussion of problems involving integers in which ideas of infinity appear and proceeds through the evolution of more abstract ideas about numbers and geometrical objects . The authors show how mathematicians came to consider groups of general transformations and then, looking upon the sets of such subjects as spaces, how they attempted to build theories of structures in general. Also considered here are the relations between mathematics and the empirical disciplines, the profound effect of high-speed computers on the scope of mathematical experimentation and the question of how much mathematical progress depends on "invention" and how much on "discovery." For mathematicians, physicists or any student of the evolution of mathematical thought, this highly regarded study offers a stimulating investigation of the essential nature of mathematics. Mark Kac was a distinguished mathematician formerly of the Rockefeller Institute and Cornell University. Stanislaw M. Ulam was a well-known nuclear scientist and mathematician who worked on the Manhattan Project and taught at Harvard University and the Universities of Wisconsin and Colorado.

Collected Works in Mathematics and Statistics
This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. The thumbnail sketches of mathematicians were taken from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at the University of St. Andrews. For correction, comments, or questions, write to Karl Dilcher ( dilcher@mscs.dal.ca You can scroll through this list, or jump to the beginning of the letter:

On Thursday evening, January 18, 2001, over 200 members, friends, and supporters of the Korean American Coalition (KAC) attended a packed, standing room-only reception on Capitol Hill to celebrate the creation of the newest addition to KAC's national family-the Washington, DC, Area Chapter (KAC-DC).
KAC is a nonprofit organization that was founded in Los Angeles in 1983 to serve, educate and advocate on behalf of the growing Korean American population. "Our community was so young and inexperienced at that time with no one taking leadership," said "T.S." Tong Soo Chung, one of KAC's founders. "We felt that the responsibility fell upon people like us-the so-called '1.5 generation' who were bilingual and educated here-to become a bridge between Korean and American communities, as well as between the first and second generation folks within our community."

List of Archival Collections
The names in this alphabetical list are represented by archival collections at the given locations in North America. No attempt is made to indicate where papers or letters by one person may also be located in the collection of another. Such cross references are often given in the collection descriptions in the indicated sources. Some mathematicians have been included for whom there are no known collections of papers. They are here only as reminders of the inevitable incompleteness of the historical record. Still there may be a possibility of filling in such gaps sometime. Corrections and additions to the list are welcomed; please see How to Provide Further Information for the List of Collections . The key to the abbreviations is given at the end. Name Birth and Death Dates of Person or Range of Collection for Institutions Location (See abbreviations at end.) Source of Information (See abbreviations at end.)
