Mathematician who came here from Poland before WW II had spirit,
By Ralph A. Raimi
On Oct. 26, a mathematician named Mark Kac (pronounced kotz)
died in California. He had been over most of his career a
professor at Cornell University, but his ties with Rochester were
substantial. For one thing, Ithaca is not far away; Kac came here
almost every year to give a talk to our mathematics department -
a "Colloquium talk" as it is called.
Mathematicians, like other scholars, visit each other's
institutions quite often to deliver professional lectures on their latest researches, generally to an audience of a handful, since the more abstruse recent results of science or mathematics are generally incomprehensible to all but a few. Kac was a master lecturer, however, and drew audiences even from among the uncomprehending, so great was the charm of his address. Kac also was a close friend and collaborator of John F. Randolph, who was chairman of the U of R math department during the They were co-authors of a widely used calculus book, back

Drums That Sound Alike
The sounds of different types of drums in a marching band are easy to distinguish, even without seeing the instruments. What makes these sounds so readily identifiable is that each drum vibrates at characteristic frequencies, depending mainly on the size, shape, tension, and composition of its sound-generating drumhead. This spectrum of frequencies the set of pure tones, or normal modes, produced by a vibrating membrane stretched across a frame gives a drum's sound its particular color. Physicists and mathematicians have long recognized that the shape of the boundary enclosing a membrane plays a crucial role in determining the membrane's spectrum of normal-mode vibrations. In 1966, mathematician Mark Kac, then at Rockefeller University in New York City, focused attention on the opposite question. Kac asked whether knowledge of a drum's normal-mode vibrations is sufficient for unambiguously inferring its geometric shape. His paper, which proved remarkably influential, bore the playful title "Can One Hear the Shape of a Drum?" Previously, mathematicians had established that both the area of a drum's membrane and the length of its rim leave a distinctive imprint on a drum's spectrum of normal modes. In other words, one can "hear" a drum's area and perimeter.

by Kenneth A. Ross Does Mathematics Need New Axioms?
by Solomon Feferman
sf@csli.stanford.edu

From the time of his stunning incompleteness results in 1931 until the end of his life, Kurt Gödel called for the pursuit of new axioms to settle undecided arithmetical problems. And from 1947 on, with the publication of his unusual article "What is Cantor's continuum problem?" (as it happens, in the American Mathematical Monthly ) he called in addition for the pursuit of new axioms to settle Cantor's famous conjecture about the cardinal number of the continuum. In both cases, he pointed primarily to schemes of higher infinity in set theory as the direction in which to seek these new principles. Logicians have learned a great deal in recent years that is relevant to Gödel's program, but there are considerable differences of opinion as to what conclusions to draw from their results. The history of that work is traced from the beginning axiomatizations of number theory by Dedekind and Peano, and of set theory by Zermelo and Fraenkel, to the very present. We then turn to an examination of what axioms of higher set theory are needed to settle problems in finite combinatorics, the continuum problem, and scientifically applicable mathematics, and close with some controversial conclusions. He was born in Krzemieniec and died in California USA . His main interest was probability . His question "can you hear the shape of a drum?" set off research into spectral theory , with the idea of understanding the extent to which the spectrum allows one to read back the geometry. (In the end, the answer was "no", in general.) His book of popularisation with Stanislaw Ulam is a minor classic.

Home Essays Oh, For the Love of Thought When is War Justified? ... If the World Were Upside-Down There are no child pages. What comes to mind upon hearing "hacker" or "geek?" In many cases, one will envision a male in his late teens who wears dark clothes, is antisocial, sits in front of a computer screen, and breaks into computer systems illegally. While such people do exist, they are more accurately called "script kiddies" or, depending on severity of infraction, "crackers." Hackers, in the general sense, merely enjoy "the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming or circumventing limitations" ("Hacker"). Similarly, a geek is "a person who pursues skill and imagination, not mainstream social acceptance" ("Geek"). Hackers and geeks, together, form a creative force with which there is virtually (pun intended) no parallel. Many of the world's greatest inventors and scientists are geeks in this pure sense of the term. As mentioned in the definition, geeks, by their philosophy, whenever possible do not seek out money or similar worldly possessions. However, if either comes with the task, they does not disagree. Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, explains: Geeks and hackers seek out, instead of money, the feeling of creating something that may have seemed impossible. This feeling has even been termed a "geekasm," a portmanteau word combining "geek" and "orgasm." By creating things that have been impossible for others, geeks fall in the realm described by Mark Kac as magician genius. He writes on page xxv of his autobiography

Genetically modified objet d'art? Crime against nature? Transgenic protein machine? The inside story of how a reengineered rabbit named Alba became the center of an intercontinental tug-of-war.
By Christopher Dickey Eduardo Kac has come to Paris to get his bunny back. The Brazilian-born, Chicago-based conceptual artist put himself on the map of global curiosity last summer when he announced that he'd created - in the name of art - a transgenic rabbit that glowed green under blue light. Of course, he hadn't done the technical work. As he described it, he'd "commissioned" the bunny from top researchers at France's Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique, an organization of 8,600 people scattered among agricultural research centers around the country. INRA technicians took green fluorescent protein from the little Pacific jellyfish Aequorea victoria, But on the eve of the exhibition, the then-director of INRA, Paul Vial, suddenly said no. He didn't really say why. Didn't have to. His people made the rabbit. His people funded it. His people would keep it. The organizers of the Avignon show denounced what they called disguised censorship. Kac returned, bunnyless, to Chicago. And the legend began to grow. "CROSS HARE: HOP AND GLOW MUTANT BUNNY AT HEART OF CONTROVERSY OVER DNA TAMPERING," read the headline in The Boston Globe last September. The wires picked up the story. So did ABC News and

Theoretical physicist Kadanoff to present CNLS Kac lectures
One of the world's leading theoretical physicists will present three talks at the Center for Non-Linear Studies Feb. 22-24. Professor Leo Kadanoff of the University of Chicago will present a series of three Mark Kac Memorial Lectures. The schedule of talks is as follows:
  • "Excellence in Computer Simulations," 3 p.m., Feb. 22, Physics Building Auditorium, Technical Area 3; "Making a Splash; Breaking a Neck," 10 a.m., Feb. 23, Center for Nonlinear Studies Conference Room, Building 1690, TA-3; and "Loewner Evolution: Maps and Shapes in Two Dimensions" 10 a.m., Feb. 24, CNLS Conference Room.
"Leo Kadanoff is a superstar of modern science. Since the 1960s, he has been one of the most influential condensed matter theorists of his generation," said Bob Ecke, director of the Center for Nonlinear Studies (T-CNLS). "His contributions to statistical mechanics, including seminal ideas that led to renormalization group theory and his more recent important contributions to nonlinear science, have had tremendous impact on a large range of scientific topics. "Furthermore, he has played a significant role in the partnership for astrophysical simulations between Los Alamos and the University of Chicago through the Advanced Simulation and Computing program," Ecke continued. "We are honored and excited to have Leo here at the Laboratory for what I know will be three stimulating talks."
