Background note: William C. Jones, an 18 year old clerk from Cambridge, Mass., enlisted in Co. A. of the 38th Massachusetts Volunteers during the summer of 1862. The best of intentions, however, did not keep him in the army for long, for less than a year later, he was discharged after contracting a strength-sapping illness. His age may have played a minor role in his discharge, as his superiors apparently considered him too young to bear the full duties of an infantryman. During Jones' brief enlistment, he saw a good deal of the war zone, if not of action. At about the end of August, 1862, the 38th Massachusetts Infantry was ordered to Baltimore, and they remained in Maryland until November, when they were assigned to join Banks' expedition to Louisiana. Boarding the S.S. Baltic , the regiment arrived at Ship Island on December 13th, and proceeded to Carrollton, La., on New Years day, and to Baton Rouge in March. At about the same time that the regiment was experiencing its first action during the Bayou Teche expedition in the first week of April, Jones fell out of the ranks, too weak to bear arms. He received his discharge on July 4.

JONES, SAMUEL PORTER: Methodist Episcopal Church, South; b. in Chambers County, Ala., Oct. 16, 1847; d. near Memphis, Tenn., Oct. 15, 1900. He was educated by private tutors and in boarding-schools, and, after serving in the Confederate Army in the Civil War, was admitted to the Georgia bar in 1869. He became addicted to liquor, however, and his career as a lawyer was seriously affected. He was converted in 1872 and was admitted to the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in the same year. He held various pastorates from 1872 to 1880, after which he was agent of the North Georgia Orphanage (1880-92). From that time until his death he was extremely active as a revivalist and advocate of total abstinence, and became one of the best-known Evangelists in the United States, attracting popular attention by his unconventional addresses, which abounded with witty and pregnant sayings. He wrote: Sermons and Sayings (Nashville, Tenn., 1883); Music Hall Series (Cincinnati, O., 1886); Quit your Meanness (1887); St. Louis Series

The Joneses - Daughter of Ruth Ann Jones
Ruth Ann Jones was married three times. She had two children by John Murray. Ruth Ann Jones, daughter of William Stephens Jones and his spouse, Mary Ann. The dates do not seem correct to me regarding the difference in birth dates of Hattie and Pearl. But here it is, as it was given to me. This picture is of one of her daughters. It only had written on the back, “Ruth Ann Jones's daughter.” No name was there. Whether it is Hattie or Pearl I do not know. I've not been able to make contact with this line of grandfather, Joseph Hubbard Jones's sister, Ruth Ann Jones. An elderly aunt told me she thought this gentleman was James Thomason and this would make this Hattie. The child would be John Tomason if she was correct. Maybe one day someone will see this and connect with me. This has happened with Becky's line, and Walsie's line.
Children of Ruth Jones and John Murray are:2. Hattie Murray, b. August 1837-d. bfr 1920

HISTORICAL SKETCH
William F. Jones was born 3 November 1823 in Fayette County, Ohio, to Matthew and Elizabeth Allan Jones. William's mother died in 1827, leaving his father to care for six young children (William, Lewis, John, Willis, Mahala, and Rachel). Matthew Jones remarried within two years of his wife's death. He and his second wife (William's stepmother) had four children (Noah, George, Adeline, and Sarah). During the Civil War, William served in the Union army for three years. He was captured by Confederate forces in 1862 at Cumberland Gap, Kentucky, and held prisoner for seven months.
