William Jones This job saw Jones serving at sea on a voyage to the West Indies, and he taught mathematics and navigation on board ships between 1695 and 1702. He was serving on a navy vessel which was part of the British-Dutch fleet under Sir George Rooke and James Butler, Duke of Ormonde, which destroyed a Franco-Spanish fleet in Vigo bay off northwestern Spain in 1702. Navigation was a topic which greatly interested Jones and his first published work was A New Compendium of the Whole Art of Navigation published in 1702. In this work he applied mathematics to navigation, studying methods to calculate position at sea. After the battle of Vigo, Jones left the navy and became a teacher of mathematics in the coffee houses of London. This may seems strange but in fact at this time coffee houses were sometimes called the Penny Universities because of the cheap education they provided. They would charge an entrance fee of one penny and then while customers drank coffee they could listen to lectures. Different coffee houses catered to specific interests such as art, business, law and mathematics. Jones was able to make a living lecturing in coffee houses such as Child's Coffee House in St Paul's Churchyard.

Introduction "God alone is great." So began the humbling eulogy for Louis XIV, delivered by Jean-Baptiste Massillon . Nearly three centuries later, this statement still haunts a pair of films by William Jones: the first, about a town in the grasp of religious fundamentalism; the second, about a man who mistook himself for a messiah.
Filmography
Massillon
(16mm, color, 70 minutes, 1991) The filmmaker of Massillon knows "you can't go home again," and yet he does. He photographs beautiful scenery and makes political commentary; he recounts childhood betrayals and discusses the etymology of the word "sodomy" - all this and more in an unconventional début. Massillon was included in the 1993 Whitney Biennial Exhibition, and was also shown at Los Angeles Filmforum, Pacific Film Archive, New York's Artists Space, and Toronto's Pleasure Dome "The best of the documentaries screened [at the Ninth Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival] is William Jones'

Jones, William (Megasiawa; Black Eagle)
Fox anthropologist Born on March 28, 1871, on the Sauk and Fox Reservation in Indian Territory, William Jones was the product of English-Welsh and Fox marriages. His grandfather, William Washington Jones, went west with Daniel Boone, fought in the Black Hawk War, and while in Iowa married Katiqua, daughter of the Fox chief Washi-ho-wa. Their son, Henry Clay Jones (Bald Eagle), married an English woman named Sarah Penny. She died when William was one year old, and the boy was raised by his grandmother Katiqua on the reservation, to which some of her people had been moved in 1870. Katiqua, of the Eagle clan, refused to speak English in the nine years she raised him. Shortly after 1880, Katiqua died and the boy's father sent him to a Quaker boarding school for Indian children in Wabash, Indiana, where he remained for three years. He then returned to his father's house in Indian Territory and worked as a cowboy. Years later, shortly before his death, Jones recalled his teenage years with deep nostalgia: "I wish the Plains could have remained as they were when I was a 'kid.' . . . Did you ever behold clearer moonlight nights anywhere else? Did you hear the lone cry of the wolf and the yelp of the coyote? I wish you could have seen the long horn and the old-time punchers." In the fall of 1889 he entered Hampton Institute in Virginia; upon his graduation in 1892 he received two prizes for scholarship. Later that year he entered Philips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, where he excelled in classical studies and began to formulate plans for studying medicine and returning to his people as a physician.
