Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

SARAH VAUGHAN
Sarah Lois Vaughan was born on March 27, 1924 in Newark, New Jersey. Both of her parents were musicians, her father, a carpenter played the guitar and sang folk music; her mother, a laundress, played the piano and sang in the Mount Zion Baptist Church Choir. At the same church Sarah sang at the choir at the age of 7, she became the organist at the age of 12, and sang as a soloist. She quit school at a young age, and started singing at "Amateur Hour" contests. She competed at the Apollo theatre Amateur Night and won in 1942, that led to numerous opportuntities in the music world. Billy Eckstine a vocalist with the Earl Hines Orchestra, witnessed the singers performance and was struck by her talent; he recommended her for the position of second piano in the band. Billy Eckstine left the Earl Hines Orchestra soon after, breaking away to form his own group. He took Sarah Vaughan with him to join along with trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Fats Navarro, saxphonists Dexter Gordon and Sonny Stitt, bassist Oscar Pettiford, and drummer Art Blakey . These band members were many of the pioneers of the Bebop style. Vaughan developed an ear for the intricate harmonies and melodies of Bebop. It was with this band that she made her recording debut on New Year's in 1944 with tracks recorded on the Continental label for which she relucatanly accpeted $20. It was not until she signed with Musicraft label in 1945 that her recording career finally began in earnest, singing what are now considered classic tunes, such as "Lover Man" and "East of the Sun and West of the Moon" as well as less well-known songs such as "Motherless Child".

July 2005 Director of Visiting Arts Visiting Arts is delighted to announce that Yvette Vaughan Jones will take up the post of Director of Visiting Arts. Yvette is currently Director of the cultural programme for Cardiff 2005. She has a long career in the arts working for the Arts Council of Wales where she set up Wales Arts International, a ground breaking initiative carried out in partnership with the British Council. Yvette spent over 2 years working in Brussels as the Policy Manager for the Wales Centre and played a key role in Cultural Policy debates within the EU before returning to Cardiff to write the city's bid for City of Culture 2008. She has also been a special adviser to the Council of Europe on cultural policy, an adviser for EFAH on EU cultural programmes and is the author of a number of articles and studies on cultural policy and practice. “We are delighted by this appointment. It is a crucial time for Visiting Arts and to have someone with Yvette's experience of international cultural policy, leadership and management means that Visiting Arts can continue to be innovative, playing a major role in strengthening intercultural understanding through the arts. • Linköping, April 5: Knots
  • Stockholm, KTH, April 6: Noncommutative Geometry
  • Uppsala, April 9: Noncommutative Geometry
  • Umeå, April 10: Noncommutative Geometry

Biographical note
Vaughan F. R. Jones was born on the 31st of December 1952, at Gisborne, New Zealand. He did his prepatory and undergraduate work in Auckland, N.Z., but left for Geneva to do his graduate work in 1974. First he did a stint at Ecole de Physique but eventually wrote a thesis in mathematics in 1979 under the guidance of the well-known topologist A. Haefliger. This was also the year in which he married Martha Myers. The next year he took up a post-doc position as a Hedrick at UCLA, and after a shorter interlude in Pennsylvania he returned to California, as a professor of mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley, where he has remained since 1985. In addition to the Fields medal, he has enjoyed a variety of awards and distinctions, the complete list of which may be too tedious to list here. Suffice it to single out, among his fellowships in various prestigous societies like the Royal Society, the AASA and the National Academy of Sciences, the award of the Honorary Vice Presidency for life of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, a position he has enjoyed since 1992.

Railroad History
Located near the site of the train wreck that took the life of the legendary engineer, the Casey Jones Railroad Museum State Park commemorates Jones' life and the story of railroading in Mississippi.
Shortly after midnight on April 30, 1900, the "cannonball" left Memphis, Tennessee with Jonathan Luther "Casey" Jones at the throttle. Trying to make up time in the run from Memphis to Canton, Mississippi, Jones has just run through a stop signal when a freight train came into view crossing the track in front of the "Cannonball. Realizing that a crash was inevitable, Jones ordered his fireman to jump clear just before the "Cannonball" rammed into four cars of the freight train. Jones was killed in the crash. The early 1900s were a period of expansion for the railroad across the country and train wrecks were almost a daily event. The brief account of the crash that appeared in the Memphis Commercial Appeal mentioned the engineer's death, but it was not considered a major news story. The tale of the ill-fated "Cannonball" would have ended on that night in 1900 if not for a friend of Jones' and a popularity of Vaudeville. Wallace Saunders, and African American engine wiper in Water Valley and a friend of Jones was deeply moved by the engineer's death and composed "The Ballad Of Casey Jones" as a tribute to his friend. The song eventually found its way to Vaudeville and with the addition of some fictional verses, became a popular hit. By the end of World War I, dozens of versions of this song had been published and millions of copies of the sheet music were in circulation. Casey Jones had become a legend.
