THE EARLY DAYS - Holywood had the pre Christian name of Ballyderry, derived from the Irish for oakgrove. Since then there had been six others. Ard-Mac-Nasca in 634 for Laiseran (later saint) who was the son of Nasca, a local princess. Sanctus Boscus, the holy wood, in 1210, Haliwode around 1300, East Holewood in 1625. In 1769 it became Hollywood and eventually in 1810, Holywood. It has been assumed that by 500 Ireland had become a Christian country and that Laiseran was born into an area endowed with monasteries at Bangor and Movilla, near Newtownards. He studied at Bangor under St Comgall, lived for some years near Cork and returned before 640 to establish the first church here, in Holywood. It is said to have been near the Motte, a mound today approached from Brook Street. In 642 a letter received from Rome by clerics in Ireland made mention of Laiseran. In 956 Holywood was pillaged by some unwelcome visitors from Scandinavia. The Vikings made a rare appearance in Ireland and carried off treasures from our village.

Holywood 87 was formed in 1987 when the members of Belfast YMCA decided unanimously to relocate to Holywood and form a new Club. The reasons behind this move were financial. Over the previous years the central YMCA had been reducing its financial support for the grounds at Bladon Drive, with an increasing financial burden falling on the sports Clubs. Restrictions imposed by the ethos of the YMCA organisation made fund-raising very difficult and there was also the threat of development of the grounds for housing, which has since taken place. During September 1896 the first hockey pitch was marked out at The Green at the Castle Lane side of the ground and, give or take a yard or two, has remained in the same position ever since. Unlike many Clubs which started in the years after 1896, North Down had the comparative luxury of a firm base from which to start - in that the Clubhouse, grounds and potential membership were already well-established. The first Club match in Ulster was played in Comber against Cliftonville on 7 November 1896 in front of a large crowd of spectators with North Down winning 8-0. Oscar Andrews scored six of the goals.
