One afternoon, I asked Feith what had gone wrong in Iraq. I asked Feith if he would have recommended the invasion of Iraq if he knew then what he knows now. The next morning, Feith telephoned. He had evidently been thinking about his answer, because he had searched out a better one. He found it in an article by Nicholas Lemann, published in this magazine
Afghanistan, he said, is an object lesson in the dangers of premature judgment. He pulled out a packet of newspaper articles from late October, 2001, soon after American forces entered Afghanistan, and read from an October 28th column by Maureen Dowd in the Times:
centcom, Feith shook his head and seemed to shrug. A centcom Feith lost other battles as well. One was a plan to train five thousand Iraqi exiles to accompany American troops in the invasion. Feith and Perle, who supported the idea, claimed that centcom

HAPPY 100TH, GEORGE BURNS!
JANUARY 19, 1996
TRANSCRIPT Have you heard the one about the comedian who turns 100 on Saturday, January 20th? His name is George Burns. Jeffrey Kaye of KCET-Los Angeles files a special backgrounder. GROUP: (singing) Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! JEFFREY KAYE: George Burns couldn't show up to hear Ann Margaret sing at the birthday celebration held in his honor earlier this week. He is suffering from the flu. But at the combination tribute and dedication of a medical research institute he helped fund, long-time friend, Barry Mirkin, read a statement from him, classic Burns. BARRY MIRKIN: "As this big day came closer and closer, people kept asking me what I would like for my hundredth birthday. What do you give a man who's been so blessed? Another hundred years? A night with Sharon Stone? Okay. So I was wrong. There are some things I could use." JEFFREY KAYE: In the last 20 years, jokes about young women and old age have been staples of Burns' repertoire. GEORGE BURNS: (1985) That sounds like an old joke. It isn't. I have a firm rule. I never tell a joke older than I am. There aren't any.

JSV: The two of you have very different backgrounds. Can you tell me about your careers and how you came to collaborate? JSV: Jeff, do you want to give that phone number? JTM: The emergency 24-hour a day phone number is (410) 313-2473. The routine number for non-emergencies is (410) 750-9600. JSV: What are your respective roles with the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation? JTM: I serve as the president, so that means I put signatures on a lot of things that need to be signed. The Foundation is run by a volunteer board of directors and I essentially serve as the highest ranking operations officer in the Foundation (and certainly have the co-founder position there). We have a Director of Operations who works immediately in my jurisdiction in terms of the line and then we have an Office Manager and somebody who handles memberships. We have a receptionist and we have somebody who handles the scheduling of conferences. We have another person who takes care of the World Congress process. My job is just to keep all the things running from the official point of view for the Foundation. I'll let George talk about his role. GSE: I started out as Chairman of the Board of Directors and found that that particular position required so much time and took me away from the training and day-to-day operations. I guess technically I'm Chairman of the Board Emeritus at this point. I am in charge of strategy, planning, policy making and Jeff is pretty much the person that makes it happen. So I come up with the ideas and Jeff makes them happen, all with the oversight of the Board of Directors. We are a non-profit organization and in 1997, we received United Nations (UN) recognition.

However, I'm unable to find any merit in his suggestion in today's NRO that the Bush administration consider conferring with a "bipartisan" group of Senators about judicial nominations. McCarthy notes that Senator Charles Schumer has proposed the creation of a "small, bipartisan group" of senators that "should meet with the president sometime in the next few weeks and eventually even make joint recommendations to the president of nominees that are highly qualified and could get broad, bipartisan support in the Senate." McCarthy states that this suggestion should not be dismissed out-of-hand. I believe that it should be. There are two possible outcomes to Schumer's approach, neither good: (1) President Bush nominates fewer conservatives than he otherwise would and (2) President Bush ultimately sticks to his guns, but from a weaker position. In the second scenario, the adminstration's position would be weaker because there would be identifiable moderate alteratives to Bush's conservative nominees who will have been blessed by a "bipartisan" committee. Bipartisan recommendations always take on a special status that bears no relation to their merit. Think of the 9/11 commission's recommendations. Had the president been sending nothing but conservative nominees to the Senate, a conciliatory position might have more to recommend it. However, the truth is that Bush at times has sent the Senate slates of nominees containing a mixture of moderates and conservatives. Early on, he proposed such a slate and, in a gesture of good will, even included Roger Gregory, an African-American Clinton recess appointee to the Fourth Circuit. Later he

(6 June 2004, updated 8b June 2004) Some observations on the past week’s reading. [Note: You may be puzzled why I make so many references to Time magazine and The Economist magazine in my writings. The reason is simple. For the past two years I have been living in Lusaka, Zambia. There are quite a few magazines available from South Africa, but the only weekly magazines that are available from the US are Time and Newsweek , and the newsstand that I frequent carries only the former. There are several weekly newspapers available from the United Kingdom, but the only serious weekly magazine is The Economist Also, please bear in mind that the observations presented here are unedited, extemporaneous writing – “thinking out loud.” They may occasionally ramble, and could benefit from some tidying up, additional research, and amplification. As I mentioned before, however, I have little time for writing at present, and these unedited, “rough notes” will have to do.]

Jeffrey Tambor as George Bluth, Jr. in Fox's "Arrested Development"
This month we speak to Jeffrey Tambor and Frederick Weller , two of the stellar cast of Glengarry Glen Ross , David Mamet's award-winning (Drama Desk, Best Ensemble; Tony Award, Best Revival) vitriolic valentine to real-estate salesmen. On August 28, the drama completes its limited engagement at the Bernard Jacobs (formerly Royale) Theatre. "It's everything I wanted it to be — and more," enthuses Jeffrey Tambor of his current experience. "Doing Mamet is working without a net. He's so delicious. I knew he was great, but I did not know that by doing him, you get him. It's like hearing an overture in a musical. There isn't an ounce of fat on this thing. It's great!" In the play, Tambor's character of George Aaronow is encouraged by Dave Moss (Gordon Clapp) to join him in robbing the real-estate office and selling its leads for sales to another firm. "Gordon and I run our scene every night [prior to the performance], just to get the cadences. I don't think Gordon would mind my telling you that." I congratulate him on the cast's (non-competitive) Drama Desk Award for Best Ensemble. "They called me that morning, and told me we had won. I said, 'Don't you mean that we were nominated?' That night, when we came offstage, [director] Joe Mantello said some very nice things to us. It was a real lift." Adds Tambor, "I love this company. I don't know how it was selected. It's a bunch of
