Zygmunt Janiszewski Burkhardt Hilbert Minkowski , and Zermelo Janiszewski next went to one of the other leading centres of mathematics in the world, namely Paris. There his professors included Goursat Hadamard Lebesgue Emile Picard , and Lebesgue supervised Janiszewski's doctoral studies in topology and in 1911 he submitted his thesis The examining board for his doctoral thesis was an extremely powerful group of mathematicians, Lebesgue and Janiszewski returned to Congress Poland (the Russian controlled region) and taught for a while in Warsaw; not at the University of Warsaw for this had been closed in 1869 as we noted above. In 1913 he published a paper of fundamental importance On cutting the plane by continua. This paper both won for him the J Mianowski Foundation prize and also qualified him to teach at the University of Lvov. There he taught courses on analytic functions and functional calculus. MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTATION
Waclaw Sierpinski (1882-1969), a Polish mathematician working in number theory and set theory, described the self-repeating, or fractal design shown on the Finnish stamp at left. Sierpinski triangles are created by connecting the the midpoints of the sides of a triangle to form four smaller, interior triangles, and then repeating this process for each of the outside three triangles, ad infinitum. A Hungarian stamp commemorating a mathematical congress shows a design of Sierpinski pyramids, with Michelangelo's hand of God from the Sistine Chapel ceiling thrown in for good measure.A full description of the Polish School of Mathematics appears here . Some of its illustrious members included in a set with Sierpinski are Stanislaw Zaremba (1863-1942), Stefan Banach (1892-1945), and Zygmunt Janiszewski (1888-1920). The above is a partial reproduction of http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/units/sel/exhibits/stamps/math2b.htm , a webpage created and posted by Maiken Naylor for the Univerity at Buffalo Libaries's Sci-Philately: A Selective History of Science on Stamps exhibit.

Polish School of Mathematics Any examination of twentieth century mathematics shows the surprising depth, originality and quantity of Polish contributions to the discipline. Similarly, any list of important twentieth century mathematicians contains Polish names in a frequency out of proportion to the size of the country. How did such creativity and mathematical influence develop in a country that had little tradition in research, that was partitioned under foreign domination from 1795 until the end of World War I, and whose educational institutions were suppressed by foreign powers. Surprisingly, it was planned! What was to become known as the Polish School of Mathematics was established following a plan proposed by Zygmunt Janiszewski. Poradnik dla Samoukow (Guidebooks for Self-Instruction) . These were designed to get around the Russian and German e ducational restrictions and were written by prominent mathematicians including Janiszewski, Sierpinski, and Zaremba; they covered topics such as series, differential and integral equations, and topology. Another series it supported was ; the first issue (1917) contained two articles which were to be very important to the establishment of the Polish School of Mathematics.

International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) The International Congress of Mathematicians has been held every four years (nominally - there have been interruptions due to war and other causes) since the first Congress held in Chicago in 1893 in honor of Columbus' voyage to America. The most famous mathematical address of all time was Hilbert's keynote address to the 1900 congress in Paris; his talk consisted of a discussion of 23 unsolved problems, now called Hilbert's problems. They were chosen as problems whose solution would International Congress of Mathematicians International Congress of Mathematicians Finland (1978), No. 612 Japan (1990), No. 2060 International Congress of Mathematicians Russia (1966), No. 3151 I also have a first day cover for the Finnish stamp. This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library.
