Chapter 11
The Doctrine of the Imamate
It has been explained in detail in the preceding chapter how
the activist claimants of the House of 'Ali were crushed, their
apparently popular movements collapsed one after the other,
and the 'Abbasids finally managed to firmly establish
themselves as the sole authority of both the state and religion.
A process of assimilation was set into motion and most of the
cross-currents represented by a number of politic-religious
or religio-political groups were gradually being absorbed,
under the patronage of the state authority, into a synthesis to
be known as the Jama'a, which was supposed to support and
in turn was supported by the 'Abbasid caliphate. In this setting the strategic task of the Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq was to save the basic ideal of Shi'ism from absorption by the emerging synthesis on the one hand, and to purify it from extremist and activist tendencies within itself on the other. Thus the circumstances in which the Imamate of Ja'far happened to fall afforded him a unique opportunity, denied to his father and grandfather, to firmly establish and explain

  • 'Abasa, Surat - The title of the 80th surah of the Holy Qur'an, meaning 'He Frowned', belonging to the Meccan period and contains 42 verses. Revealed at a very early stage of the Prophet's mission, this surah has been designated by the predicate with which the first sentence opens, "He frowned and turned away...". The immediate cause of the revelation of the first ten verses was an incident witnessed by a number of the Prophet's contemporaries when the Prophet became impatient with a blind man while he was espousing the Qur'an. (See al-Hisab Yawm al-Qiyama al-'Abbas b. 'Abd al-Muttalib - Prophet Muhammad's merchant uncle who married Maymuna, the sister of 'Abbas' wife and died in 32 AH (653 AD). • al-Sa'a - The Hour. This word is used to designate the Last Day, the Hour of Resurrection. In the Qur'an , verse 107 of Suart Yusuf talks of 'The Hour' taking the unwary unbeliever by surprise. Islamic eschatology has elaborated a profusion of detail about 'The Hour' and the portents or 'Signs of the Hour' ( Isharat al-Sa'a ) which signal its imminent coming. (See Ba'th al-Hisab Yawm al-Qiyama Saba', Surat - The title of the 34th surah of the Qur'an ; Saba' is one of the Arabic forms of the place name known in English as Sheba. It was a major seat of South Arabian civilization in ancient times. The surah belongs to the Meccan period and contains 54 verses. Its title is drawn from verses 15 on ward which relate the story of the destruction of the great Ma'rib Dam . The surah goes on to stress that Muhammad has been sent as a herald ( bashir ) and a warner ( nadhir ). (See

PREFACE The noble action of the recitation of the Salawaat and Salaam, be it in whatever language, and in the manner of standing with utmost reverence, is not confined to the Ahle Sunnah from amongst the Indo-Pak region only, but can be traced to almost every country from Africa to the remote regions of the far North and spreading across from Asia to the heart of America.
A book of this nature was very much needed and, Alhamdulillah, Brother Ismail Ebrahim, a university student, has researched this topic extensively using a number of authentic Kitaabs, and has answered every objection and misconception, thus proving the permissibility of standing and reciting the Salawaat and Salaam. I have also had the privilege of reading through the manuscript and have found all the sources to be exact. May Almighty Allah, through the Wasila of the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam), grant Brother Ismail His special Favors and assist him in upholding the pristine teachings of the Ahle Sunnah Wa Jamaat at a time when false ideologies are misleading the Ummah from the Straight Path. Aameen.

Al-Suyuti, in introduction to his Tadrib al-rawi, writes that at the beginning of the second century of Hijrah, the sciences related to hadith consisted of three disciplines: `ilm tadwin al-hadith, `ilm al-hadith, and `ilm usul al-hadith . However, during the third century, according to Ibn al-Mulaqqin, the science of hadith came to consist of more than two hundred disciplines. Abu Hatam, according to a more simple classification, has mentioned the existence of fifty separate disciplines. Ibn Hajar describes the various disciplines more simply in this fashion: `ilm usul al-hadith, `ulum al-hadith, `ilm mustalah al-hadith, and `ilm dirayat al-hadith (which also includes `ilm al-rijal) . However, there was a difference of opinion among men of eminence among Muslims about the very necessity of hadith.

    Death and the Grave
"And the agony of death comes with the Truth; that is what you used to flee from!" [(50) Qaaf, 19] Death is the separation of the soul from the body, and we all know that it is inevitable. It is the event which marks our transition from this world into the Hereafter. Whenever `Uthman radiallahu `anhu used to stand over a grave, he used to weep until his beard became soaked. Someone said to him, "Heaven and Hell are mentioned, and you do not weep, and [yet] the grave is mentioned, and you weep, [how is this] ?" He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) say : The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter. So, if he is saved from it, that which is after it will be easier, whereas if he is not saved from it, then that which is after it will be more severe." (Related by Tirmidhi) Belief in the events following death is an integral part of the Islamic doctrine. Although the existence of the Hereafter is rationally admissible, the exact details of it can only be acquired through communication from the Creator, for these events fall in the realm of the Unseen. Thus, all one may demand as proofs in this matter are verses of the Qur'an and authentic ahadith. Having become convinced of the veracity of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu `alayhe wa-sallam, the believer has no hesitance in accepting what he has brought.
