Tal expresión es frecuentemente utilizada en el léxico del sufismo para aludir a la excelencia del grado espiritual alcanzado por el "santo" (walí). El propio Ibn ‘Arabí es calificado muchas veces de al-Kibrit al-Ahmar ("Azufre Rojo") por sus discípulos y sus seguidores» ("Ibn ‘Arabi o la búsqueda del azufre rojo", Editora Regional de Murcia, Murcia, 1996). Durante mucho tiempo fue designada con el mismo término que la química propiamente dicha ( al-kimiyya en árabe), antes de que ésta se convirtiera en una ciencia "exacta".
