Basisbegrippen Christiaan Huygens werd op 14 april 1629 in Den Haag geboren, als tweede zoon van de de beroemde dichter/staatsman Constantijn Huygens. Hij groeide op in een vooraanstaand milieu en kreeg les van privé-leraren. Hij was in alles een uitblinker, zodat hij op negenjarige leeftijd al Latijn sprak. Hij had ook aanleg voor wiskunde en mechanica. Hij verdiepte zich niet alleen in de theorie, maar voerde de mechanische constructies ook zelf in de praktijk uit, aanvankelijk thuis. In 1645 gaat hij in Leiden rechten en vooral wiskunde studeren. In 1657 verschijnt het werk "Van rekeningh in spelen van geluck" over de kansberekening, waarin Huygens bewijst dat uitkomsten van kansspelen weliswaar onzeker zijn, maar de kans op winst of verlies exact te bepalen is. In het voorjaar van 1695 werd hij ziek. Hij was nooit getrouwd geweest. Op 8 juli 1695 stierf hij op 66-jarige leeftijd in Den Haag.

Huygens studi² giurisprudenza e matematica all'Universit  di Leida dal 1645 al 1647 e successivamente al College van Oranje (Collegio d'Orange) in Breda. Huygens prepar² le fondamenta del calcolo infinitesimale (poi sviluppato da Leibniz e Newton) nei suoi lavori sui coni, ma soprattutto ¨ famoso per il suo ragionamento che la luce consistesse di onde. Nel 1655, adoperando un telescopio di propria fabbricazione, scopr¬ la luna di Saturno, Titano. Esamin² gli anelli di Saturno a fondo e nel 1656 scopr¬ che consistevano di rocce. Nello stesso anno osserv² la nebulosa di Orione. Grazie al suo telescopio fu in grado di suddividere la nebulosa in singole stelle. La regione interna pi¹ chiara della nebulosa di Orione ¨ chiamata regione di Huygens in onore di questo lavoro.

Žil v 17. století a zaøadil se mezi takové velikány tehdejší doby jako napøíklad byli Galilei, Kepler, Descartes, Fermat, Pascal, Hooke, Newton. Dnes jméno Huygens nese i èást sondy Cassini, která 14. ledna 2005 uspìšnì pøistála na povrchu Saturnova mìsíce Titanu. Christiaan Huygens se narodil 14. dubna 1629 v holandském Haagu, ale jeho rodièe Konstantin a Zuzana pocházeli ze severního Brabantska (území v Belgii). Christiaan a jeho 4 sourozenci vyrùstali v intelektuálnì ladìném prostøedí, o èemž svìdèí na 8 500 otcových dopisù s pøedními evropskými vìdci. Do svých dvaceti let studoval Huygens na univerzitì v Leidenu, která tehdy byla velmi ovlivnìna uèením Descartovým, ale i Komenského. Kromì dìl Descartových se zde seznámil i s matematickými díly Marina Mersenna. Právì francouzský matematik Marin Mersenne vedl Huygensovy první vìdecké kroky a pøivedl ho od problémù galileovské mechaniky až k zájmu o rychlost svìtla, optiku a matematiku. Huygense si velmi cenil, což dokazuje napøíklad blahopøání k Novému roku 1647, ve kterém mu píše: Mezi první Huygensova díla patøily matematické práce: Teorémy o kvadratratuøe hyperboly, elipsy a kruhu a tìžišti jejích èástí
